John Brown Gordon’s career of prominent public service spanned four of America’s most turbulent decades. Born in Upson County, Georgia, in 1832, Gordon practiced law in Atlanta and, in the years immediately preceding the Civil War, developed coal mines in northwest Georgia. In 1861, he responded to the Confederate call to arms by raising a company of volunteers. His subsequent rise from captain to corps commander was unmatched in the Army of Northern Virginia. He emerged from the Civil War as one of the South’s most respected generals, and the reputation that Gordon earned while “wearing the gray” significantly influenced almost every aspect of his life during the next forty years.
After the Civil War, Gordon drifted into politics. He was elected to the United States Senate in 2873 and quickly established himself as a spokesman for Georgia and for the South as a whole. He eloquently defended the integrity of southern whites while fighting to restore home rule. In addition to safeguarding and promoting southern interests, Gordon strove to replace sectional antagonisms with a commitment to building a stronger, more unified nation. His efforts throughout his post-war career contributed significantly to the process of national reconciliation.
Even in the wake of charges of corruption that surrounded his resignation from the Senate in 1880, Gordon remained an extremely popular man in the South. He engaged in a variety of speculative business ventures, served as governor of Georgia, and returned for another term in the Senate before he retired permanently from public office. He devoted his final years to lecture tours, to serving as commander-in-chief of the United Confederate Veterans, and to writing his memoirs, Reminiscences of the Civil War.
Utilizing newspapers, scattered manuscript collections, and official records, Ralph Eckert presents a critical biography of Gordon that analyzes all areas of his career. As one of the few Confederates to command a corps without the benefit of previous military training, Gordon provides a fascinating example of a Civil War citizen-soldier. Equally interesting, however, were Gordon’s postwar activities and the often conflicting responsibilities that he felt as a southerner and an American. The contributions that Gordon made to Georgia, to the South, and to the United States during this period are arguably as important as any of his career.

Southerner to the last

John Brown Gordon entered the war with little to no military experience. That didn't stop him, however, from rising to the rank of Lt. General and in command of the famed Second Corps of the AONV when they surrendered at Appomattox. This biography is full of details of Gordon's life from beginning until end. I purchased this book not knowing much about except for what was mentioned about him briefly in biographies of other generals that he served under. After reading this book I came away with a full understanding and appreciation for this man of great skill.
Gordon was truly a renaissance man of his times. Even if you aren't that interested about the Civil War or his role in it you should get this book to learn about the Reconstruction period and beyond in the South and Georgia specifically. His business and political involvements could almost make their own book. This is by far the definitive biography of John Brown Gordon.

An American military hero, but not so much a political and business hero

John Brown Gordon was seen by many southerners as vigorous, brilliant and popular in both war and peace alike. Ralph Lowell-Eckert’s work chronicles John Gordon’s rise from relative obscurity in pre-war Georgia, to the command of the vaunted Second Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia, all the way through his political career in the post-war battlefield of reconstructing the American South. Lowell-Eckert’s work is a thorough account of Gordon’s life and career, but the main reason for my reading the book—his career during the Civil War, seems to come and go with too much rapidity. While this should not seem a giant detractor to Lowell-Eckert’s work, unless you are fascinated by nineteenth century American politics, the book tends to bog the reader down quite easily.
John B. Gordon was born in Georgia in 1832 and was quite successful in several ventures before the outbreak of hostilities, in 1861. Though he led a moderately successful life before the Civil War stained the consciousness of the American mindset, war is ultimately what made Gordon the man he would be remembered for today. Robert Toombs boldly summed up Gordon’s career in the years after the Civil War by stating: “If Gordon’s war scar was somewhere other than his face he would have been a failure as a politician.” Gordon took part in the majority of campaigns waged by Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia from 1861-1865, and rose the whole way from a captain to a Major General of the famed Second Corps. Gordon suffered several severe wounds, like the aforementioned facial scar, defending the “bloody lane” at the battle of Antietam in 1862, and essentially garnered an immense respect from and propinquity with General Lee. With an unrivaled spirit of intrepidity and an accrued fighting acumen, Gordon was chosen by Lee to head the army when it surrendered at Appomattox in April of 1865.
After the war, Gordon, like many from the South, needed to return home and see to the business of rejoining the union and becoming a whole nation once again. This is where Lowell-Eckert’s book essentially transitions from a military book to a political one, and unfortunately started to lose my interest. The book delves head first into seemingly every aspect of John Gordon’s post-Civil War career with great detail, and chronicles how the general turned his war fame into a lucrative political and business future. The problem, however, for Gordon was that he was not as suited to the business world as he was to the battlefield. Though he made several fortunes over his lifetime, he always seemed to squander his finances on dangerous speculations and grandiose schemes for fame and fortune. The book also points out that though Gordon was honorable and audacious in the line of battle, he seemed to engage in outright criminal activity much of the time during his political and business ventures.
While I went into the book with a great respect and yearning to learn more about this captivating American war hero, after completion of the book I couldn’t help but feeling that his post-war career greatly reduced the amount of respect that I previously held for the general. I know judging someone for something 150 years after the fact seems trivial, but it seems so very hard for me to believe that a man that gave so much for an essentially lost cause, was so eager to continuously be involved with so many unscrupulous characters in his later life. I know that everyone has their downfalls and personal demons, but for a man that really clung to his Civil War principles for so long, Gordon had no problem bending his level of power to suit his personal needs.
The book is essential if anyone would like to have a better understanding of John B. Gordon’s Civil War exploits, but just know that the chapters on the war sails by quite quickly and you are left with the detailed descriptions of the generals massive and tireless post-war undertakings. I recommend the book for the details on Gordon’s military career alone; just realize that the war is only a small part of this large book.
