William Rand Kenan Jr. (1872-1965) is best remembered throughout his native North Carolina as a major benefactor of his alma mater, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. But he was also a gifted scientist and business executive. In this first comprehensive biography, Walter Campbell charts Kenan's achievements in areas as diverse as chemistry, dairy science, media management, and railroad and resort development. While still a student at UNC, Kenan played an important role in the discovery of calcium carbide--the major component in the manufacture of acetylene--which led to the formation of Union Carbide Company. He later created the nation's largest and most advanced private dairy research farm at his home in Lockport, New York. In 1899, he became a consultant to Standard Oil cofounder and Florida developer Henry Morrison Flagler, who later married Kenan's sister Mary Lily. Following Flagler's death in 1913, Kenan successfully guided the vast network of Flagler businesses, as well as his own flourishing enterprises, through a tumultuous period that saw two world wars, a speculative land boom, and a depression. This biography offers new insights into Kenan's many successes as well as his disappointments, particularly his keen sense of having lived his life in the shadow of others. It also includes the first objective account of the widely reported rift between the Kenans and the family of Mary Lily's second husband, Robert Worth Bingham.

If you want to learn about the Kenan family of North Carolina, this is the best source -- and refers you to other sources. I know, being distantly related and needing to do deep research on how I got into political trouble after my own book about my former employer, WALKING ON GLASS: A MEMOIR OF THE LATER DAYS OF TENNESSEE WILLIAMS, was torpedoed by the Republican Party when it had been contracted to be the featured release (of 30 books), by Alyson Books in April of 2010. A well-written and inspiring book about women artists

This book features the life stories of four women artists - Georgia O'Keeffe, Frida Kahlo, Alice Neel and Faith Ringgold. Each of them surmounted great odds including illness, betrayal, discouragement and poverty. But they continued to create works of art, and eventually became well-known.

There are many pictures of the artists and their art througout the book, and these photographs help trace their growth as artists. I wish there was some more information about the medium that the artist worked in to create these pictures.

This book is a good read overall, especially for women, and young girls aspiring to careers in art. But its appeal is much wider, and anyone can draw inspiration from these stories.

From the Back Cover
The discovery in 1938 of the diary and personal papers of William Johnson (ca. 1809-1851), a free Negro of Natchez, Mississippi, made possible the publication of this fascinating volume. Johnson's diary offers a firsthand account of a former slave who rose from harsh circumstances to become a successful businessman. It is also an intimate portrait of life and social relations in a southern town in the years leading up to the Civil War.

About the Author

William Ransom Hogan (1908-1971), a graduate of Trinity University, received his advanced degrees from the Univeristy of Texas. He was formerly head of the Department of Archives at LSU and served during World War II as a captain in military intelligence. He was a professor at Tulane University from 1947 until his death and served for many years as chairman of the history department. In 1946 Hogan published his influential The Texas Republic: A Social and Economic History, an authoritative account of early Texas history and a standard source of information on the republic.

Edwin A. Davis discovered the diary in the attic of the house the diarist built in 1840-41. It is still occupied by Johnson's descendants, who consented to the purchase of the diary and numerous other items by the Louisiana State University Department of Archives, of which Davis was then the head. Davis graduated from Kansas State Teachers College and received his advanced degrees at the State University of Iowa and LSU.

Hidden History

The Diary of William Johnson is a must read for the Ante-Bellum period. Reading his diary you get a wonderful glimpse of the everyday life and family of William Johnson. This is truly a special hidden piece of history. I have not finished the entire diary but I use it a lot for reference in my genealogical research. Sorrowfully, I am a descendant of Baylor Winn, the man who murdered William Johnson over a boundary dispute in 1851. There was a lot of controversy over the murder, if you haven't read about it you should. But ultimately, this tragic event led us inside the life and history of the people of this time. Today, you can visit William Johnson's house in Natchez.

He called me to tell me that he totally enjoyed this book and he asked me to order the book for another person(he raved so much to this person about the book). He's leaving the book to the family (once he passes on) to let each

member to read and learn about Afro American History.

Natchez

Visted Natchez in the Spring and heard so much about William Johnson. Visted his home and wanted to read the diary. The diary is really interesting. Amazing that he recorded so much during a rather interesting time in our nation. I woudl highly recommed to any history buff.

Great book for any cartoonist!

This book has become my go to whenever i need reference on cartooning! As a freelance artist, i've spent years trying to craft my own style. When i got this book, it really opened my eyes to just how much i could push things and still have them look good. I now have this book right next to my workspace at all times, ready for when i need a quick refresh of ideas!

I purchased this and the Fantasy! Cartooning book. I really wanted to polish my drawings and they looked like great resources for 'finding my style'.

I'd be considered a beginner/intermediate artist, and these benefited me greatly. Definitely work through this book before Fantasy! Cartooning. You can think of that book as an expansion pack rather than a sequel. Fantasy! Cartooning is merely tips on tweaking your style and filled with a bunch of example drawings. If you're on a budget, you can completely skip that book. (Though I still like it and keep it handy for reference.)

Now Action! Cartooning on the other hand is a goldmine of resources for beginners. He goes over everything from breaking down gestures and cartoon anatomy for beginners. Gives the basics on drawing Emotions and gives a nice resource of eye/nose/mouth styles to study. It's written to be easy to understand and filled with humor. He makes it fun!

This is a great crash course on Cartooning basics. It greatly helped improve my art and drawing from my imagination. Definitely pick this book up! Now I recommend doing some figure study before cartooning though. You really need a basic understand of human anatomy before starting cartooning. Trust me. Get some books for that as well. I picked up How to Draw the Human Figure and basically drew an assload of nude people for awhile before cartooning, and still do. It helps a TON.

I bought two!

Yep. It's that good.

Ben's style is infectious.

This would be in my top 5 how-to-draw books that I keep close by on my drawing desk.

I respect the advice passed on in these pages. His breakdown instruction on heads, figures, faces, women etc is second to none!

He is a master of his art. I would definitely buy another one as a gift for a budding cartoonist or even an established cartoonist.

This is one of those books you wish you had when you were first learning to draw cartoons.

I highly recommend it.

Left my old copy where it would do the most good

It will be nice to have a new copy. Some poetry is so brilliant that the effort of fighting memorization is a fey pleasure; the flow seeps into places you didn't know were there. Speaking of the work of Sonia Sanchez, I found her late in life, and she reminded me of Ita Jones, who wrote The Grub Bag. A friend of mine, Carla Perry, author of Riva Beside Me, said something that guided me to Homegirls and Handgrenades, and here I am, on my second copy of MH. Why are all my other Sanchez books in tatters? Sit down for a week and I'll tell

Better yet, start reading anywhere. Here is good. Some of her work sets Lilies of the Field to music that can't be sung in this world without her words.

Gorgeous, moving book of haiku

Sonia Sanchez has written a book full of beautiful haiku. I’ve marked at least half of the 104 pages with one or more haiku that deeply moved me. Here are a few examples:

your death
a blues, i could not
drink away

in the beginning
when memory was sound. there was
bonesmell. bloodtear. whisperscream;

And plenty of beautiful poems of image and sound:

brownskinned
children dancing
with butterflies

your drums
soloing our breaths into
the beat . . . unbeat

I highly recommend the book. Though the subject matter is a thoroughly modern and lovely reflection of African American cultural influence, the emotional impact of Sanchez’s haiku/senryu style is quite similar to that of reading a Japanese haiku in the original.

Many English haiku writers simplistically write haiku in the 5-7-5 form because this is how it was first understood in English. However, Japanese words have more syllables than English words, so the effect of writing 5-7-5 haiku is English is wordy and diluted. Sanchez’s style is more true to the emotional impact by concentrating the impact of each haiku in 5-6 substantive words in most cases, while writing subject matter that is uniquely her own.

About the Author
Jay Wexler is a Professor at the Boston University School of Law, where he has taught since 2001. Prior to teaching, Wexler studied religion at the University of Chicago Divinity School and law at Stanford Law School. After law school, he worked as a clerk to Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg at the U.S. Supreme Court and then as a lawyer in the Office of Legal Council at the Department of Justice. He has published nearly twenty academic articles, essays, and reviews, as well as nearly three dozen short stories and humor pieces, in places like The Boston Globe, Spy, Mental Floss, and McSweeney's. His first book was Holy Hullabaloos.

Constitutional Law Made Easy and Hilarious

Over a decade ago, I was fortunate enough to take constitutional law from two legal titans, Gerald Gunther and Kathleen Sullivan (who richly deserves her spot on many shortlists for a SCT appointment). Jay Wexler was a classmate then and he remains a good friend today. So discount this review all you want. But I learned as much First Amendment law from reading Holy Hullabaloos as I did in law school from the best the legal academy has to offer. And, better yet, I busted out in laughter every few pages. What a feat! Reading Holy Hullabaloos is like exercising on a treadmill while watching a great sitcom -- you don't even notice that you have bettered yourself for taking it on.

Wexler, whose hilarious short stories have been published everywhere from McSweeneys to Monkeybicycle, is a brilliant, insightful and self-effacing writer who teaches without preaching. He may well convince you of his view of the proper interpretation and scope of the religion clauses. But I doubt that's his principal aim. By delving deeper into the facts of these cases and the religious and cultural communities in which they arose, Wexler forces you to challenge your own assumptions about the proper role of religion and government in our society. That, and he makes you laugh. But regardless of his intent, you won't forget these travel stories or the cases he recounts in the process.

So read Holy Hullabaloos. You really won't regret it.

Thoughtful, and alarmingly funny

I'm intimidated by the other two reviews, as they are very well-written. I went to BU Law, where Prof. Wexler teaches, and in fact I work there now. But I never took any of his classes (sorry!) so you don't really have to discount this review.

Holy Hullabaloos really does manage to combine humor with wonderfully clear analyses of some Really Important Supreme Court cases. In law school, I took no more con law than was required, so I really don't have much of a background in the area, but I came away from reading the book feeling very well-informed.

Wexler discusses these cases in a really thought-provoking way. To echo another review, I found his point about teaching about religion in schools to be a really good one. The book was much more thoughtful than I expected. That is, it wasn't just a series of jokes about law and religion cases. Rather, Wexler combines legal analysis and humor to both educate the reader and to make this larger point about the way we treat and think about religion. Having gone to Catholic school myself, but one where we actually did have a world religions class at some point and where dissent was tolerated, if not encouraged, the idea that we need to be respectful of others' religious beliefs, or lack thereof, really resonated with me.

Also, I really did laugh out loud. Once on the train. It was very embarrassing.

Really good sausage

As the saying goes, man should see neither law nor sausage made. And if civil laws are the sausage, then judge-made law must be that offal that's left behind. So, congratulations to Jay Wexler for making something tasty out of it. Beware all ye academics, this book is not for you. It is far too clear and well reasoned for the purists. "Where are the footnotes?" you will ask.

Wexler's writing style is accessible and uproariously funny, but he does not sacrifice the complexity of what he is writing about. He manages to clearly explain a number of Supreme Court decisions that follow no logical progression, violate rules that the justices themselves created, and basically make a huge sticky mess out of both the Establishment and Free Exercise clause.

The best part of the book is actually the sub-text and here is where Wexler's evil genius truly shows. This is not, in fact, a book about the First Amendment. It is a lesson in religious tolerance, one that needs teaching, but rarely gets brought into the classroom. As Wexler makes clear, the best way to respect our First Amendment freedoms is not to let the Supreme Court anywhere near them. If Americans don't bring the crazy cases, then the Court can't mess them up. A simple, yet diabolical plan.

While these two groups had previously lived peaceably, if sometimes uneasily, with their Christian neighbors throughout much of the medieval era, the expulsions brought a new intensity to Spanish Christian perceptions of both the moriscos (converts from Islam) and the judeoconversos (converts from Judaism). In Parallel Histories, James S. Amelang reconstructs the compelling struggle of converts to coexist with a Christian majority that suspected them of secretly adhering to their ancestral faiths and destroying national religious unity in the process.

Discussing first Muslims and then Jews in turn, Amelang explores not only the expulsions themselves but also religious beliefs and practices, social and professional characteristics, the construction of collective and individual identities, cultural creativity, and, finally, the difficulties of maintaining orthodox rites and tenets under conditions of persecution. Despite the oppression these two groups experienced, the descendants of the judeoconversos would ultimately be assimilated into the mainstream, unlike their morisco counterparts, who were exiled in 1609.

Amelang masterfully presents a complex narrative that not only gives voice to religious minorities in early modern Spain but also focuses on one of the greatest divergences in the history of European Christianity.

Not for fans of more simplistic art

This was one book that I wouldn't have bought if I had "browsed" thru it in a book store. We are new to scrollsawing and therefore were buying various pattern books for ideas and such. The word "artistic" in this book's title should have tipped me off; the majority of the patterns are quite "artsy" by which I mean they are a little too odd for me; pretty modern stuff. I seem to favor patterns like those of Judy Gale Roberts.

Pass on this book

This book is extremely over priced and has very little value to the hobbyist scroll saw worker. The book offers almost no usable help or information. Save your money and buy a child's coloring book and you'll get the same patterns for a lot less money. I have two scroll saw books by this author and I wish I had saved my money and not purchased either book. This book is nothing but silhouetted sophomoric drawings and has very little substance.

Artistic Scroll Saw Patterns & Projects

This book included some interesting patterns with a modern flare that really caught my eye. I was very excited about using my scroll saw with metal, but my enthusiasm has been squelched by the lack of instruction! Patrick Spielman and Dan Kihl failed to include sufficient information for attempting the projects. They failed to indicate what thickness of metal should be used for the various projects as well as any detail regarding preparation for the patina finishes. I would give this book 3 stars for being the only book I found with a modern patterns, but unfortunately the patterns are of no use to me without sufficient instruction. I am glad that I now know that I can use my scroll saw for metal projects, but again I am disappointed that I will now need to buy another book to complete the metal projects from this book!
