Fogel and Stanley Engerman's 1974 groundbreaking book, Time on the Cross, applied cliometrics to the study of slavery, revealing it to be a profitable and efficient labor system, and their book remains a fiercely debated work. Now, in an enlightening memoir, Fogel chronicles the controversies surrounding American slavery over four decades and the emergence of a new generation of intellectual and political historians who questioned the progressive synthesis. The Slavery Debates is an informative summary of the literature on the economics of American slavery, offering a valuable glimpse into one of the most interesting chapters of the historical profession.

Fogel, a Nobel Prize-winning economist, provides personal perspective on the heated debates triggered by the publication of his book Time on the Cross (1974). Fogel and coauthor Stanley Engerman used cliometrics (quantitative data to analyze historical problems) to conclude that American slavery was a profitable and efficient system, contrary to arguments used by abolitionists to appeal to those immune to solely moral arguments. Fogel recalls the controversy surrounding his work and the broader scholarly debates concerning the intersection of the morality and the profitability of American slavery. In this series of lectures, Fogel examines the prevailing scholarship from 1952 until 1990, including the irony of resistance to the development of black studies programs as a scholarly pursuit and the contributions of those programs as a testing ground for new social science methods. Although somewhat academic, Fogel's book offers great clarity and insight into a very sensitive topic, examining the benefits the nation has derived from a morally reprehensible practice and our failure to come to terms with that fact. At the end of the war, working mothers vigorously protested the termination of child care subsidies. In Citizen, Mother, Worker, Emilie Stoltzfus traces grassroots activism and national and local policy debates concerning public funding of children's day care in the two decades after the end of World War II.

Using events in Cleveland, Ohio; Washington, D.C.; and the state of California, Stoltzfus identifies a prevailing belief among postwar policymakers that women could best serve the nation as homemakers. Although federal funding was briefly extended after the end of the war, grassroots campaigns for subsidized day care in Cleveland and Washington met with only limited success. In California, however, mothers asserted their importance to the state's economy as "productive citizens" and won a permanent, state-funded child care program. In addition, by the 1960s, federal child care funding gained new life as an alternative to cash aid for poor single mothers.

These debates about the public's stake in what many viewed as a private matter help illuminate America's changing social, political, and fiscal priorities, as well as the meaning of female citizenship in the postwar period.

A different time

Stoltzfus studies the roughly twenty years after World War 2, and the social attitudes in the United States towards women, in that time. She found that picking the topic of whether a government (federal or state) should offer child care to women in the workforce was a good focal point. It let her study the women's efforts to get this maintained after the war years, when it was introduced as an emergency measure. Plus, the reactions of the lobbied politicians and bureaucrats were typical of the prevailing social attitudes towards working women.
It really has not been that many years ago. Yet the echoes from these pages makes it seem like another era. Probably it was. When any employer could fire a female employee soley because she got married, or pregnant, with any risk of opprobrium.
The book also goes into the intertwining of the child care issue with that of race. How, in this pre-civil rights time, many women who had to work were Negro. Which naturally made harder the lobbying of white legislators.

The inspiring story of the awakening of a group of severely challenged students through art Ten years ago, Tim Lefens was introduced to a
group of severely challenged students living at the Matheny School in New Jersey, none of whom could walk, only one of whom could talk, and all lacking the use of their hands. As a painter facing the gradual loss of his own eyesight, Tim had come to fully appreciate the power of art, and he was determined to enable the students to paint despite their physical limitations.
Lefens improvised a number of techniques for the students, including using the wheels of their chairs to paint and having able-bodied "trackers"
take direction from them, guided by a laser beam strapped to the artists' heads. These remarkable artists include Nat, the spirited seventeen-
year-old with the beaded braids and brash wit; the brooding James; the wildly mischievous Chet; Eric, the group philosopher, whose talent seems to know no bounds; and the maverick Latino tracker Angel, bent on breaking every rule in the book. The artists come to express themselves through their
painting in breathtaking style.

Flying Colors is an immensely inspiring story about leaping over obstacles. We learn of the challenges the students faced as well as the extraordinary successes they achieved, culminating with an art show in New York and a CBS News documentary. In the early '90s, Lefens, a painter, goes to the Metheny School for students with cerebral palsy and other disabilities to show slides of his work. As this intensely moving memoir shows, he becomes obsessed with finding ways to help students, who are in wheelchairs and have no use of their arms or hands, learning to express themselves, devising methods that allow them the freedom to paint. Carefully maneuvering wheelchairs over tinted acrylic produces excellent results, they find, and a laser attached to a welder's helmet can direct a surrogate precisely where to apply the paint to a canvas. His students thrive: some begin speaking more frequently; others experience improvements in their physical well-being. Lefens founds Artistic Realizations Technologies (A.R.T.) to insure these techniques are used by others. Student work becomes so noted that they get gallery showings, sell their paintings and are the subject of a CBS Evening News special. There are obstacles along the way: it is a struggle to get A.R.T. funded; dismissive sentimentalism (and even resentment) is often shown by teachers, administrators, social workers and therapists confronting the work and students. Lefens writes simply and clearly throughout, remaining focused on the students and the task at hand. "The idea," he tells them, "is not to struggle to do things the way that able-bodied people do. The idea is to make art."

This is a story of courage and possibilities and of the power of art to transform the lives of its creators. Lefens (founder of Artistic Realization Technologies, or A.R.T.) begins by carefully describing his first encounter with the residents of New Jersey's Matheny School for severely physically challenged students while on a visit to show slides of his artwork. He then goes on to build a riveting narrative about the art classes that he subsequently taught at the school, during which he helped students create their own artworks with the inventive use of wheelchairs, lasers, and assistants (or "trackers") as painting tools. Students soon expressed their own styles freely as individuals and as artists and Lefens invites the reader to become acquainted with each. The results of his efforts were far-reaching art shows in New Jersey and New York, television and press coverage, and the formation of the A.R.T. organization to introduce these techniques to others. Most important, they ignited a passion for art that gave new meaning to the lives of each student as well as to their teacher, who eventually revealed his own personal affliction of deteriorating eyesight. A "Must Read" for Everyone

Everyone I know who has read this book has used the same words...inspiring, moving, uplifting-and they are all true. But its more than that. Its a story of a remarkable group of people who became a group and produced marvelous creations. The amazing thing is that the students were basically people of whom nothing much was expected. Yet, they had so much to say, if only they could learn how to express themselves. Tim Lefens gave them a way to do it....and the results are amazing. I have been to some of the shows and met some of the artists, and came away awed both by the beauty of their work and their justifiable pride in their accomplishments. In a way it made me sad though-imagine just how many other people are out there who are in the same position these artists were in before Mr. Lefens came into their lives. Reading this book made me realize that you should never, ever assume that someone can't do something because they have some kind of disability. They CAN do most things...they just may need to do it in a slightly different way. There is a lesson in this book for all of us. Despite the fact that the book is inspirational, it is not inspirational in a "preachy" sense of the word. Its a good, fun, interesting book to read, and its a book I have been recommending to many friends and one that I may give as a Christmas present this year as well. So one, go out and read this book, and two, try to catch one of these shows-you won't regret doing either.

Will blow you away!

Everyone on my gift list is getting a copy.
Whether or not you have any experience whatsoever with the world of disabilities or the world of art, this is one profoundly inspiring story. It will challenge even the most ingrained misperceptions about people with difAbilities.
From my perspective as the parent of a young son with difAbilities, I can clearly see the impact that the methods of creative expression pioneered by A.R.T. will have on all aspects of his life. We're going to get started right away. There's a soul to unleash!
There are so few heroes in today's world. Tim Lefens is one of them.

Flying Colors

This book is like entering the silent world of the nonverbal and severely disabled and seeing through the words of the author's excellent descriptions what a few hours a week were like in the art room at Matheny.
We have always wondered, and now finally are able to "see" and "hear" the process, from novice to pro, that these young adults enjoyed so much, but were never able to explain because of their physical limitations.
One of these artists is our daughter, Cindy.

Constituting what may be the most impressive research to date of state supreme court records, Slavery, the Civil Law, and the Supreme Court of Louisiana analyzes the evolution of Louisiana's slave laws from the territorial period to the Civil War. Over the course of four years, Judith Kelleher Schafer examined the original handwritten decisions (only recently made available) of the Louisiana Supreme Court, scrutinizing 1,200 appeals involving slaves as plaintiffs, defendants, or objects in lawsuits or criminal actions. The result is the first book-length study of those manuscripts and the first study of any state's slave law and its courts to use original case records from the entire antebellum era. Louisiana's legal system was unique among those of southern slave states in that it embodied a legacy of French, Spanish, and thus, indirectly, Roman law. However, through repeated exposure to common-law tenets over time - a development Schafer tracesLouisiana law became more "Americanized, " so that by the dawn of the Civil War it was in many respects very similar to that of other states seceding from the Union. Louisiana was unusual also in that its highest court was required to hear virtually every case brought to it on appeal. Decisions of that body, therefore, represent not merely a few landmark cases but a spectrum of typical parish- and district-court cases, many of which include vivid details about the day-to-day realities of slavery and the world that formed, and was formed by, that institution. Schafer presents numerous concise case histories, stories that are fascinating and at times heartbreaking in the particulars they reveal about slaves' existence. We see how the courtcontinually wrestled with the paradox that slaves were considered by the law to be at once persons and property. I think this book is for the person who wants to know more about the laws undergirding slavery, whether for research purposes or to understand another layer of the issue. I found it to be informative as well as interesting, and because it quotes so many laws and court cases, to also be credible. Information spans America from it's inception as English, French and Spanish Colonies, throughout United States of America history. I do recommend it.

Robert W. Johannsen's Lincoln, the South, and Slavery traces the political dimension of Lincoln's antislavery stance as it evolved from the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act in 1854 to his election as president in 1860. Whereas previous scholars have largely ignored the political character of Lincoln's antislavery argument, Johannsen sees Lincoln as an astute and ambitious politician whose statements where shaped and directed by the time's ever-changing political exigencies and considerations. Johannsen does not demean the quality of Lincoln's sincerity or downgrade the importance of his moral convictions on the slavery issue, but he does suggest that politics played a larger role than previously acknowledged in the form these convictions took. The four chapters that compose this work connect Lincoln's position with his attitude toward the South and Southerners, from his initial appeal to Southerners at a time when he sought to revitalize the dying Whig party, through his deepening involvement in the Republican party, to his final belief that the South and Southern interests no longer needed to be considered as factors determining his national political success. Johannsen focuses on Lincoln's debut in 1854 as an antislavery speaker, on the development of his stand for the ultimate extinction of slavery, on his espression of the doctrine of the irrepressible conflict, and finally on Lincoln's and the South's perceptions of each other in 1860. As no other work has done, Lincoln, the South, and Slavery shows how Lincoln, in response to the demands of politics, became increasingly anti-slavery and anti-Southern during the 1850s. It will be a welcome contribution to the ongoing debate about the enigma of Lincoln and about his role in the coming of the Civil War.

A. Lincoln: A Blundering Politician?

"Lincoln, the South, and Slavery" is a short book (124 pages) by historian Robert Johannsen, better known for his work on Stephen A. Douglas. Based on five lectures delivered at two different places, the book traces the evolution of Lincoln's views on slavery and the South between 1854 and 1860, concluding with a chapter that describes and critiques Lincoln's behavior between his nomination for president and his inauguration.

Johannsen draws on extensive primary source material, including Lincoln's speeches and correspondence, contemporary newspaper articles and editorials, some of Douglas's speeches, and early accounts by people who knew Lincoln. The major thesis of the book is that Lincoln was a master politician whose thinking developed at least partly in response to the ever changing political situation but who failed to exercise true statesmanship when the Southern sates began to secede.

In his introduction Johannsen discusses how difficult it is to approach Lincoln as a historical figure rather than as a demigod. Nevertheless, his objective is to apply standard methods of historical analysis to the sixteenth president. In my opinion, he largely succeeds. Anyone who has read much about Lincoln knows that the vast majority of writing about him is uncritically favorable, ranging from blatant hagiography to evaluations of his presidency that omit or skim over his more questionable statements and actions in order to rank him as one of the greatest statesmen of all time. A much smaller body of literature is fiercely hostile and vituperative. Johannsen's book falls somewhere in between. He believes that Lincoln sometimes contradicted himself, said things in private that he refused to say in public, and could be extremely obtuse. In short, he presents Lincoln as a very human president.

The most critical chapter is the last one, in which the author depicts Lincoln and his party as focusing so intently on winning the 1860 election and deciding how to distribute the patronage that they gave little thought to how they would govern the country once they were in charge. As a result, they failed to take Southern threats of secession seriously. Lincoln himself seems to have been in deep denial; as late as February 1861--after seven states had seceded and formed a rival government--he assured a Midwestern audience that there was no crisis.

This is a valuable book for anyone who seeks to understand the extent to which "blundering politicians" failed to deal effectively with the political crisis that led to the Civil War and is willing to consider the possibility that Lincoln was one of the chief blunderers.

Good Read on the first American Dictator

I enjoyed this well researched book concerning Lincoln, whom I hold to have been the first U.S. president to twist his office into that of a dictator. Much more could be said about Lincoln, but this book was written solely concerning his views on slavery. I would recommend this to a friend interested in Lincoln.

Outstanding information, presented in a disappointing way.

Love the information in the book! Very small book, an easy read, by a man who apparently spent most of his life studying what happened leading up to the Civil War.

Sadly, he seems eager to defend Douglas,

The book's name could have been "Lincoln, the South, and Stephen A Douglas" because much of the book is about Douglas -- Johannsen was a Douglas biographer, and here, he comes to the Little Giant's defense.

In tone, more than anything, Johannsen kinda paints Lincoln as the political schemer, and Douglas as a sincere man out to solve an "unfortunate problem" of the spread of slavery.

Johannsen does include a more than few bits of information not generally known -such as, others, before Douglas, spoke about the repeal of Missouri Compromise. Yet Johannses extrapolates that to devalue Lincoln's reaction to Douglas actual repeal of the "Compromise". As if some words spoken in 1852 by some Senator Dixon ,males Douglas support of Southern deviousl machinations, were not the fraulently, lethal, and deadly actions they were. Douglas did not necessarily intend to cause a Civil War, but he gave "high hopes" to Jeff Davis and David Rice Atchison, that they could trick and terrorize Kansas into quick capitulation on slavery. They were wrong -- and wrong, interestingly enough, because of the speed of communication. This was the first time those who killed and terrorized to spread slavery were exposed in the same day, or same week, as the violence took place. (Johannsen does not go into that)

Furthermore, Johannse admits a few sentences later, those in LIncoln's party who were for the "repeal" of the Compromise, on page 23, were actually trying to get the language of Kansas Act to bluntly say that would repeal the Compromise -- as a way to defeat the Kansas Act on page 24. Yet he used that, regardless, to belittle Lincoln's reaction to Kansas Act. A strange kind of paragraph, that.

You learn a lot -- but you learn from a scholar who was defending Douglas, and accepted Douglas own speeches as valid, factually on as a narrative. A more thorough look at the facts, show Douglas was duplicitous, and that duplicity caused a calamity. Something Johannsen seems to blame on Lincoln.

In the 1980s, Willis McGlascoe Carter’s handwritten memoir turned up unexpectedly in the hands of a midwestern antiques dealer. Its twenty-two pages told a fascinating story of a man born into slavery in Virginia who, at the onset of freedom, gained an education, became a teacher, started a family, and edited a newspaper. Even his life as a slave seemed exceptional: he described how his owners treated him and his family with respect, and he learned to read and write. Tucked into its back pages, the memoir included a handwritten tribute to Carter, written by his fellow teachers upon his death. Robert Heinrich and Deborah Harding’s From Slave to Statesman tells the extraordinary story of Willis M. Carter’s life. Using Carter’s brief memoir--one of the few extant narratives penned by a former slave--as a starting point, Heinrich and Harding fill in the abundant gaps in his life, providing unique insight into many of the most important events and transformations in this period of southern history.



Carter was born a slave in 1852. Upon gaining freedom after the Civil War, Carter, like many former slaves, traveled in search of employment and education. He journeyed as far as Rhode Island and then moved to Washington, DC, where he attended night school before entering and graduating from Wayland Seminary. He continued on to Staunton, Virginia, where he became a teacher and principal in the city’s African American schools, the editor of the Staunton Tribune, a leader in community and state civil rights organizations, and an activist in the Republican Party. Carter served as an alternate delegate to the 1896 Republican National Convention, and later he helped lead the battle against Virginia’s new state constitution, which white supremacists sought to use as a means to disenfranchise blacks. As part of that campaign, Carter traveled to Richmond to address delegates at the constitutional convention, serving as chairman of a committee that advocated voting rights and equal public education for African Americans. Although Carter did not live to see Virginia adopt its new Jim Crow constitution, he died knowing that he had done all in his power to stop it. From Slave to Statesman fittingly resurrects Carter’s all-but-forgotten story, adding immeasurably to our understanding of the journey that he and men like him took out of slavery into a world of incredible promise and powerful disappointment.

Scholarly yet fascinating and readable.

Such an interesting story but presented in a thorough and scholarly manner. I especially liked that the entire diary is included at the end, so one can read it for oneself. This is a nuanced telling of actual events without the overlay of our own contemporary judgments. We tend to bring our own "20/20 hindsight" to descriptions of this era, but the book lets us see things through the eyes of people as they actually lived at the time. Excellent and exceedingly readable.

One of the more venerated ideas in American life is that upward mobility for individuals flows from education and hard work. Significantly, and understandably, scholars of African-American life have tended to emphasize the ways in which the array of legal, economic and social factors undergirding white supremacy limited opportunities for most black southerners to significantly improve their stations in life in the post-Civil War era.

In their excellent From Slave to Statesman, Robert Heinrich and Deborah Harding now offer up the example of a remarkable Virginia man, Willis M. Carter, who elevated himself far beyond his humble beginnings, despite the era's harsh racial realities. Born into slavery in 1852, Carter embraced education (to be sure, he enjoyed opportunities in this area denied to the vast majority of former slaves) and the wide variety of employment opportunities that came his way (as a young man, for example, he was a railroad flagman and waiter).

By 1882, Carter had become a teacher, would later serve as a principal of a Staunton school for more than a decade, and would edit his own newspaper, the Staunton Tribune.

In the years that followed, Carter's life would take a political turn. In 1896, he served as an alternate Delegate for the Republican National Convention, and early the next century, he would join with other activist-minded African-Americans by agitating against the racialist components of the new Virginia state constitution before passing away at the age of forty-nine in 1902.

In sum, this is a slim, readable volume that opens up the era's racial landscape to readers. Particular credit to the authors for making so much of the thin -- it's not more than a few hundred words -- autobiographical sketch of Carter's life that served for the starting point for this project. My suggestion to readers is to turn to the back of the book and read Carter's own sketch before diving into the book's chapters. Doing so will only elevate the reader's esteem for Carter and the work of these fine historians.

Grade 4-6 In the Hebrew calendar, Av 10 marks the date when, in the year 70, the Second Temple was destroyed by the conquering Romans. The holiday of Tishah Be'av is observed by Jews as a day of mourning in commemoration of the destruction. This book details the events in and around Jerusalem from 70 to 200, as individual Jews made choices of what to do. Roseman uses the participation format, asking readers to make decisions: e.g., in escaping from Jerusalem and the Romans do you join a peaceful group of religious students living at Qumran, or do you go to Masada, still hopeful of defeating the Romans? Readers who follow all of the choices will learn much about conditions during that period. This is history only slightly fictionalized; there is no characterizationjust "you are there" factual descriptions. This is a good hi-lo examination of that period. About the Author
Marina Umaschi Bers is an assistant professor at the Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Development and an adjunct professor in the Computer Science Department at Tufts University. She received her PhD from the MIT Media Lab in 2001. In 2005, she received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientist and Engineers (PECASE), the highest honor given by the US government to promising and groundbreaking investigators who are starting their independent careers.

I am a computer science teacher in a K-8 school in California. I also teach Lego Engineering. I found this book to be a great resource. It inspired me to try using the RCX kits with the kindergarten class. I was amazed at the results. Thank You.

Yes to a Great Motivating Text for Early Childhood Play and Robotics

This is the first and best book every early childhood teacher should read when trying to challenge young learners in the classroom to have fun while learning basic STEM concepts. It gave me a starting point to launch a robotics enrichment center time in which I will teach code-writing to kindergarteners, is teacher and reader-friendly, with resources. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking to enhance the curriculum in a new way. Write a robotics grant or fundraise, and you, too, can have an innovative classroom. This book makes it become a reality.

Bers changed my entire perspective on technology use in early education. Her child-centered approach convinced me that its possible to use technology to enhance creative play in young children without making them "screen zombies". A MUST READ for educators.
