From Library Journal
The authors, a psychological anthropologist and a developmental psychologist, undertook a study of 202 ethnically diverse lesbian and gay youth aged 14 to 20 during 1987 and 1988 at the Horizons Community Services, Inc., a Chicago gay community center founded in 1973. A brief history of the 20th-century homosexual experience in Chicago contextualizes the study, which serves as a microcosm of American attitudes toward homosexuality. This moving inquiry demonstrates that any confusion youth may experience is not about their sexual identity but about how to express themselves in an intensely homophobic society. Recommended for most collections.

From Kirkus Reviews
A sure-to-be controversial volume on inducting self-professed homosexual teenagers into the gay and lesbian culture of the 1990's. Hackles rise merely at the idea that teenagers can know whether they prefer the same sex or the opposite. Adolescence is the age of experimentation, most people contend, one in which no decisions have been made. But Herdt (Human Development/University of Chicago; ed., Gay Culture in America, 1992, etc.) and Boxer (Psychiatry/University of Chicago), both of whom are gay, disagree, their findings based on two years spent interviewing teenagers at the Chicago-based Horizons center, which offers refuge for teens troubled about their sexual identities. The authors' interviews and questionnaires show that, in some cases, children as young as nine years old have the beginnings of a same-sex preference. As puberty arrives, some of these kids accept their homosexuality, while others deny it and struggle against their feelings. Horizons offers the support of peers and of gay and lesbian counselors, as well as an introduction to the gay and lesbian community. Herdt and Boxer describe that community in often tedious detail, including the geography of Chicago's gay neighborhoods; the history of homosexuals in the US; and the rituals and organizations--from political groups to choruses and sports teams--that help define a gay/lesbian culture. Most of the children who come to Horizons have kept their sexual orientation a secret except from a close friend or two, and they use the confidence they develop there to ``come out'' to families and at school. As the authors describe it, though, ``coming out'' is a continuing process, about ``the death and rebirth of a new self.'' Repetitious and sometimes academic-sounding, but still useful information about a new generation of gays who are coming out in the daylight and not in a closet or a dark and dangerous bar. -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. Refreshing. . . provides a wealth of inspiration and some practical suggestions for adults who would like to provide services for gay and lesbian youth, but who may not be sure how to begin. —Lambda Book Report

From Booklist
Chaconas tries something a little tricky: she introduces the spirit of Easter without religious association and without the Easter Bunny. True, this stars a rabbit, but Little Bunny is just a brown, furry fellow living in a meadow, enticed by the smells of fresh air and flowing water. Beaver says that those smells are the scent of Easter and that Easter is a basket. So, Bunny gathers twigs and reeds and makes a basket. Woodchuck says Easter is fresh grass; Mouse says it’s sweet berries. Bunny generously gives the now-filled basket to Robin, who needs a place for her eggs. Retreating to his cave, Bunny resigns himself to having given Easter away. Then, Wren takes Bunny to see Easter—baby robins, woodchucks, mice, and beavers. Easter? Easter is new life . . . Easter is all around us today. Although some may object to the missing Christian aspects, the loving feel of this certainly says Easter more than decorated eggs. The simply drawn woodland animals washed with watercolors will attract little ones. Preschool-Kindergarten. --Ilene Cooper

Magnificent Spring Story!
By Nicki Hanley
Dori Chaconas once again brings us a fantastic picture book with a delicate and sweet story. The rhythm of the story flows wonderfully throughout the beautifully illustrated pages. Little Bunny goes on an adventure and comes to a beautiful conclusion about life in the end. Young and old alike, it would be very difficult for anyone who reads this book to not be touched and inspired by Dori's uplifting writing.

lovely children's book
By P. Archdeacon
I found a copy of this book at my local library, and after reading it to a group of preschoolers, decided I had to have a copy for my granddaughter. It's a great story about the Easter experience told simply and without actual reference to the Christian event--suitable for those times when the Bible story isn't appropriate. The illustrations are wonderful--and the preschoolers I worked with seemed to enjoy them as much as the adults. I recommend this for your collection of children's books!

Five Thousand Days Like This One: An American Family History, by Jane Brox

Wnen her father dies and leaves her to decide the fate of the family farm, Jane Brox wonders how family identity--language, food, a grandfather's wish for "five thousand days like this one"--can endure when so few traces of former lives are left. With a poet's eye and a historian's hunger, she is driven to search out her family's past in the fascinating and quintessentially American history of the Merrimack Valley, its farmers, and the immigrant workers caught up in the industrial textile age.

From Publishers Weekly
Brox delicately interweaves the voices of her late father, Henry David Thoreau and immigrant mill workers in the early 20th century in this elegant meditation on life in the Merrimack Valley in Massachussets. After working in textile mills where "cloth dust [fell] constant as high mountain flurries," Brox's Lebanese-born grandparents bought a farm where her father planted apple orchards and to which she returned after his death in 1995. In a series of reflections using family memories as points of departure, she lyrically evokes the time before the Pawtucket Indians died out from European diseases and the days when Thoreau sailed on the Merrimack River, as well as the 1912 Strike for Bread and Roses, when local militias were called in to contain mill workers striking over 16 cents or so in weekly wages (two loaves of bread). Brox's care with historical detail means women are not omitted from her accounts. She writes sensitively of the girls who "waited for marriage" in the mills, making cloth destined to become "worn and bleached and frayed by time and effort until it was patched and threadbare, and at last cut up for quilts or rags or a child's toy, after which it all but disappeared." She wistfully acknowledges that American farms like her family's are now referred to as "agro-entertainment," while former mill buildings house computer industries and synthetic textile trades. This is a clear-eyed and cogent history of farming, immigrant life and one American family written in prose that sparkles like the Merrimack River once did. (Mar.) FYI: Brox was awarded the 1996 L.L. Winship/PEN New England Award and a 1994 National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellowship.

From School Library Journal
YA-Pondering the recent death of her father, Brox reflects on her Lebanese and Italian heritage and the people who developed the farm in the Merrimack Valley of New England that she must now manage on her own. Using family reminiscences, archival materials, and quotations from Thoreau, she details the story of the stalwart men and women who formed the working communities of mill towns like Lowell and Lawrence-immigrants who struggled, slaved, and dreamed of a better life. Saving their meager wages, the lucky ones who survived the horrors of the mill purchased farms and then toiled to make the land flourish with dairy farms and orchards. The bitter labor strikes and the influenza epidemic of 1918 became part of the fabric of the valley's history. As more and more land was devoured by the so-called progress of development, Brox's father clung to his farm and rejoiced in his apple orchards. The author remembers fondly the family reunion at which her aged grandfather who had purchased the land toasted the family with "five thousand days like this one." She recounts her family history with nostalgia for the lost beauty of the land but this is no lament. Her writing evokes a love for the past coupled with the hope of saving part of the heritage that shaped the valley and its people. Her story has universal appeal because of the many voices the author calls up to enrich her memoir.

From Kirkus Reviews
A lovely and melancholy history of her family and its farm, a holdout in the soil-poor Northeast, from Brox (Here and Nowhere Else: Late Seasons of a Farm and Its Family, 1995). The place has 40 cleared acres, 100 in woodlot, and another dozen given over to peaches and applesBaldwins, of course, no longer in favor despite their spicy juices. This is a typical New England farm, clasping its small fields set off by chinked walls and the mixed woods beyond'' and typical too in its poor luck, though the homestead has not nearly so bad a case of the dwindles as Brox's father, who commits to her the family past as he lies dying. Brox shoulders her father's mantle. Poring over his papers and walking the land, she experiences (and coaxes life from) the farm as her father must have 50 years before. She also turns caretaker of the family stories and tells with care and artistry the tale of her Lebanese grandparents, come to the Lawrence, Mass., woolen and worsted mills, there adding Arabic to the babel of languages heard over the clacking of the looms. They bought a small farm and raised cows: ``Five cents a quart, three cents a pintthe first customers got all the creamuntil his ladle scraped the bottom of a can and he poured the last blue milk into a mason jar.'' Brox recounts all the little ways the Great War made inroads into their lives, the impossibly grim influenza pandemic of 1918, and the workers strikes that shut the mills of Lawrence and Lowell, where ``the noise in the weave rooms was loud enough to break the sleep of earth.'' Unlike the mill owners, Brox plans to stay put. This is quite beautiful music, the sound of a family's life that keeps ringing in a daughter's ears. -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. Uneven, but interesting account
By M. Desoer
I vascillated between really loving parts of this book, and being annoyed at others. The book discusses the history of the Merrimack Valley in northeastern Massachusetts, weaving in stories about the author's parents' lives there as immigrants from Italy and Lebanon. It also compares descriptions of the area written by Thoreau, and others, in the 19th century.
While most of it was fascinating, some aspects of the book bothered me. First, as the book progresses, it becomes evident that it is a collection of prior essays; some portions are repetitive, almost down to the exact language. Second, I felt that the author was trying too hard to be "lyrical." Some of the writing seemed "forced," convoluted, and grammatically awkward, to the point that I had to reread sentences to figure out what she wanted to say.
Despite these criticisms, it is an interesting read about an area that has changed so much over the last 150 years.

This is an incredibly powerful and exquisitely written book.
By A Customer
Jane Brox's second book is masterful: a cross between social history and memoir, a book that is devastatingly clear about the future of the family farm and yet without a trace of rancor. Even if, like me, you're a city person, you should READ THIS BOOK for its pervasive, gentle wisdom; for its stunning prose; for everything a book should offer to its reader--access to a beloved world.

Just like representations in everyday life, this book shows that represenations are ubiquitous to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, the STEM disciplines. "Show Me What You Know" showcases research on representations across a range of STEM disciplines and ages, from children as young as 2 years of age to professional mathematicians. The text highlights the importance of paying close attention to learners' interpretations and productions of different representations as a source of evidence for what learners understand, and another way for learners to "show us what they know'.

The text is organized around four themes: appropriation of representations, making meaning, highlighting, and representations as scaffold and supports.

[Editor's Note: The following is a combined review with STAR WARS JEDI QUEST: The Way of the Apprentice.]--These first two installments in the Jedi Quest series follow young Anakin Skywalker and his master, Obi-Wan Kenobi, as Anakin begins his apprenticeship. The books are repetitive and somewhat long on exposition, but the audio productions help overcome these defects. Jonathan Davis's readings are superb. His clear voice seems made for narration, and he does excellent imitations of the voices various actors have given the characters in the Star Wars films. Add to this John Watson's familiar score and the judicious use of humming light sabers, roaring engines, and other sound effects, and you have a winning selection for young fans. An Excellent Addition to the Star Wars Novel Universe
By A Customer
The time between Episodes 1 and 2 has left us with a space of ten years to dream up Anakin's life as a Jedi Padawan. In this new novel, Jude Watson does a good job of showing how the slave boy from Tatooine grows up to be Darth Vader. But I enjoyed this book, as it gave me insight into his training and shows that he does have darker tendencies. Jedi Quest also shows how Obi-Wan Kenobi fights to ease his inner turmoil around loosing his Master, while trying to train a boy who has inner turmoil of his own. I have read all the Star Wars books, but I think that this is one of the most interesting books, and Ms. Watson's style is one that the readers can relate to. I highly recommend Jedi Quest for anyone looking for a good read, even if you don't like Star Wars.
Also recommended: Star Wars Rogue Planet, the Jedi Apprentice series, and Deceptions, the Jedi Apprentice Super Edition.

Good, quite good in fact
By A Customer
I can't help but be a bit surprised at to how many less than favorable reviews this book has gotten so far. I personally loved it. Sure, if your judging it on the scale of say, Heir to the Empire, than perhaps it leaves a bit to be desired, but to judge it in that way at all seems unfair, since this book is (as some of you adults seem to forget) aimed at twelve year olds. That is not to say that older people couldn't enjoy it (I'm almost sixteen) but they should keep that in mind. Most children wouldn't want to read a four hundred page book that you need a dictionary to get through with eight plots tangling themselves into each other. As a children's book, however, like Jedi Apprentice and Young Jedi Knights before it, it's excellent, managing to hold a fairly complex plot along with plenty of character development for Anakin and Obi-Wan both. Anyway, in this book the Jedi council decides to allow Anakin Skywalker (now thirteen) to build his own lightsaber at last. However, Anakin's childhood as a slave still returns to haunt him, and Obi-Wan cannot help but wonder, is his Padawan truly ready for this responsibility? Ready or not, Anakin tackles the project in the caves of Illum, and when he and Obi-Wan return to the Jedi Temple, the council already has a mission ready for them. They are ordered to find and intercept a gang of slave pirates; the very same ones who once traumatized Anakin and his fellow slaves. Anakin is quite eager to at last take his revenge on them, but is the temptation to the dark side too much to bear? Anyway, like I said this book was great, It was fascinating to find out how the lightsaber that would someday be weilded by Luke Skywalker and then Mara Jade was built! It was a great book, overall, and I recommend it stroungly to fans of Jedi Apprentice and Star Wars books in general.

A thrilling new Star Wars book.
By Rebecca Herman
Four years have passed since Qui-Gon's death. Obi-Wan is trying to do a good job of teaching Anakin, who is now thirteen, but he fears he may be letting his master down. The Jedi Council, which still has doubts about Anakin, allows Obi-Wan to take him to the planet Ilum to build his lightsaber. On Ilum, Anakin is forced to face painful memories he thought he had left behind. After their return to Coruscant, Obi-Wan and Anakin are sent on a mission to help guard a diplomatic ship against pirates. But the mission becomes more complicated than expected when pirates attack and both Obi-Wan and Anakin are forced to face their pasts. I reccomend this new novel to all Star Wars fans, not just the age group it is written for.

The Liberty Party, 1840-1848: Antislavery Third-Party Politics in the United States (Antislavery, Abolition, and the Atlantic World), by R

In early 1840, abolitionists founded the Liberty Party as a political outlet for their antislavery beliefs. A mere eight years later, bolstered by the increasing slavery debate and growing sectional conflict, the party had grown to challenge the two mainstream political factions in many areas. In The Liberty Party, 1840--1848, Reinhard O. Johnson provides the first comprehensive history of this short-lived but important third party, detailing how it helped to bring the antislavery movement to the forefront of American politics and became the central institutional vehicle in the fight against the "peculiar institution."

As the major instrument of antislavery sentiment, the Liberty organization was more than a political party and included not only eligible voters but also disfranchised African Americans and women. Most party members held evangelical beliefs, and as Johnson relates, an intense religiosity permeated most of the group's activities. At least eight U.S. senators, eighteen members of the House of Representatives, five state governors, and two justices of the Supreme Court were among the many Liberty Party members with distinguished careers in the public and private sectors. Though most early Liberty supporters came from the Whig Party, an increasing number of former Democrats joined the party as it matured.

Johnson discusses the Liberty Party's founding and its national growth through the presidential election of 1844; its struggles to define itself amid serious internal disagreements over philosophy, strategy, and tactics in the ensuing years; and the reasons behind its decline and merger into the Free Soil coalition in 1848. Since most Liberty Party activities occurred at the state level, Johnson treats the history of each state party in considerable detail, demonstrating how the party developed differently state by state and illustrating how these differences blended with the national view of the party.

Informative appendices include statewide results for all presidential and gubernatorial elections between 1840 and 1848, the Liberty Party's 1844 platform, and short biographies of every Liberty member mentioned in the main text of the book. Epic in scope and encyclopedic in detail, The Liberty Party, 1840--1848 will serve as an invaluable reference for anyone interested in nineteenth-century American politics.

The perfect reference for parents needing answers to basic questions asked by preschool and kindergarten age children
By Midwest Book Review
Honest Answers To Your Child's Jewish Questions: A Rabbi's Insights by Sharon G. Forman (who was ordained as a Reform rabbi from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in 1994 and who currently teaches at Westchester Reform Temple, Westchester County, New York) is the perfect reference for parents needing answers to basic questions asked by preschool and kindergarten age children about Jewish identity, the nature of God, the Jewish "Life Cycle", the Torah and the Bible, Israel, anti-Semitism, the diversity of the Jewish community, even the present Israeli-Arab conflict. Honest Answers To Your Child's Jewish Questions succinctly addresses such questions as Why do I have to learn Hebrew?; Why do we read the same stories over and over?; Do I have to believe in God to be Jewish?; What was the Holocaust? and more. Honest Answers To Your Child's Jewish Questions is very strongly recommended for all parents of a Jewish child with questions -- as well as their non-Jewish friends and classmates who often give rise to those questions.

Clear answers to kid's tough questions
By Valerie Lieber
Forman gives straightforward, clear answers to the kinds of questions that kids often ask. My favorites are "Why should I try to be like the people in the Torah when they were not always so great?" and "Why should I pray if I don't think God is listening?"

Even adults wonder these questions. That's what makes this book a standout. It answers the questions of adults so they can feel confident giving intelligent, honest answers to kids when children ask such questions. The book helps even the most uneducated or cynical parents or grandparents find a way to express the power and beauty of Jewish ritual, study and ethics to kids.

As a rabbi, I plan to give this book to the parents of all the young children in the religious school. It will be invaluable.

Dating Jesus: A Story of Fundamentalism, Feminism, and the American Girl, by Susan Campbell

By the age of twelve, Susan Campbell had been flirting with Jesus for some time, and in her mind, Jesus had been flirting back. Why wouldn't he? She went to his house three times a week, listened to his stories, loudly and lustily sang songs to him. She even professed her love for him through being baptized.

In this lovingly told tale, Susan Campbell takes us into the world of Christian fundamentalism—a world where details really, really matter. And she shows us what happened when she finally came to admit that in her faith, women would never be allowed a seat near the throne.

Review
Simultaneously wisecracking and scholarly, both heartfelt and hilarious . . . I loved this book! —Wally Lamb, author of The Hour I First Believed

"This fond memoir of growing up a rebellious tomboy in a fundamentalist church that expects women to be pious, subservient and, above all, quiet tells what it feels like to have Jesus as your boyfriend-and what happens when you want to break up with him."—Ms.

"[A] heartfelt memoir . . . [Campbell's] writing is striking for the compassion with which she views her younger self, a fledgling believer confined in a cage of manmade rules."—Jane Ciabattari, More

"Rarely has a genuine feminist emerged from the modern evangelical movement. An exception is Susan Campbell."—Hanna Rosin, Mother Jones

"A mesmerizing, funny, impressionistic memoir of a spiritual and thoughtful person, one who has spent her life wrestling with religion, the meaning of faith and her feelings for the Divine."—Houston Chronicle

"Campbell has both a sense of humor and a knack for religious research . . . [and gives] readers a hook to grab on to as they ponder life's big questions alongside a tomboy theologian."—Harry Levins, St. Louis Post-Dispatch

"A moving account of closely cinched fundamentalist girlhood . . . Fundamentalism 'broke off in us,' like a sword, seems a poignant metaphor for the injuries suffered. Fortunately for the rest of us, [Campbell's] chosen salve for those wounds is the writing of astute and vivid prose."—Valerie Weaver-Zercher, The Christian Century

Chapter One: The Devil Is in an Air Bubble

The devil is in an air bubble floating beneath my baptismal robe.

This is troublesome, because I am trying to do the right
thing—and, incidentally, avoid hellfire. I have walked to the front
of my fundamentalist Christian church this Sunday morning to
profess my love for Jesus and be buried with him in the baptismal
grave. I will rise and walk anew, a new Christian, a good girl—
not sinless, but perfect nevertheless.

But this damn bubble is getting in the way. It is Satan, come
to thwart me.

I am a fundamentalist. I know that in order to spend eternity
in heaven with Jesus, I must be immersed completely
in the water, be it in a baptismal font, like this overly large
bathtub-type model at the front of my church, or in the swimming
pool at Green Valley Bible Camp, where I go every summer,
or in a river, or anywhere where the water will cover me completely.

I must be buried, figuratively speaking, because that is
how Jesus did it with his cousin, John the Baptizer, in the river
Jordan.1 It is how I want to do it now. I came to the earth sinless—
not like Catholic babies, who, I’d been told, drag Adam’s original
sin around like a tail. Not me. Had I died at birth, I would have
shot back to God in heaven like a rocket. But I did not die, and the
time I’ve been on earth since my birth I’ve spent accumulating
black blots on my soul, like cigarette burns in a gauze curtain.

And here Satan has floated up in a bubble beneath the thick
white robe, and so I am not, technically speaking, completely immersed.
My soul is encased in my body and my body is encased in
this gown, and a small portion of it has swollen to break the water’s
surface, like a tiny pregnancy, or the beginning of a thought.
My head is under. One hand is clenching my nose shut and the
other is crossed over my chest, half the posture of a corpse in a casket.
But if this dress doesn’t sink with the rest of me, the whole
ceremony will be useless.

I am a fundamentalist. We worry about such things.
A ceremonial joining-together only makes sense. I am thirteen
when I decide to make it official. I’d been flirting with Jesus since
age eight or so, the way a little girl will stand innocently next to
her cutest uncle, will preen and dance for attention with only a
dim idea of the greater weight of her actions. I meant no harm. I
just loved Jesus. He made me feel happy.

In my mind, Jesus had been flirting back, and why wouldn’t
he? Our families were close. I went to his house three times a week,
sat in his living room, listened to his stories, loudly sang songs to
him. Our relationship was inevitable, and it seemed the simplest
thing imaginable to declare my love.

And so on this bright and terrible Sunday morning I nervously slide out of my pew to walk up the aisle during the invitation
song, the tune we sing after the preacher gives his sermon. The invitation
song is a time of relief for those who think the preacher
has gone on too long, and a time of trepidation for the sinners
who are paying attention. Although the song varies depending
on who’s leading the singing, all the invitation songs share a tone
of exhortation firmly grounded in fear, meant to shake a few of
the ungodly loose from the trees. And I am a sinner. I know that
as assuredly as I know Jesus loves me. I am trying to live my life
to meet the impossible ideal of perfection set for me exactly 1,972
years earlier by my boyfriend. The Bible said Don’t lie, but I lie
several times a day. The Bible said Don’t steal, but I copied from
a friend one morning in social studies because I hadn’t taken the
time to do my own homework. The Bible said not to lust, and
while I am not clear what that means exactly, I harbor a deep and
abiding crush on a series of pop culture icons from Bobby Sherman
on—save for Donny Osmond, because he is too Mormon and
I don’t think I could convert him. But Donny is the only one from
Tiger Beat magazine for whom I have no tingling feelings. I know,
even though my church would frown on it because none of these
boy-men are members, that if any of them save Donny drove up
in a jacked-up Camaro and honked the horn, I would hop into the
front seat without a look back.

Oh I sinned, all right.

As I begin to walk to the front pew of the sanctuary at Fourth
and Forest church of Christ, I can hear the giggles and gasps from
my girlfriends left behind. Most of them have already taken the
walk to the front to declare their love for Jesus, but I have dragged
my feet. I know I need to be baptized—it would sure beat spending
eternity in hellfire—but it seems such an awesome step. I am
walking toward the highest church office I can reach as a female—
that of a baptized believer—and for that brief moment, all
eyes are on me. I will be a Christian. I will teach Sunday school
and participate in the odd rite of church dinners, where the mark
of distinction is given to any woman who can assemble an ordinary-
looking cake out of ingredients you wouldn’t expect, like
beer. Or potato chips. I will grow up and marry a deacon, the
worker bees of our church, who will one day grow old—like,
forty or so—and become an elder. I will raise up my children in
the way they should go, and when they are old, they will not depart
from me.2 I will wear red lipstick and aprons and gather my
grandchildren to my ample lap (all grandmas being fat). And finally,
I will recline in my rose-scented deathbed with a brave,
faint smile as my family gathers around me, and then I will rise
in spirit to my home in glory, leaving behind a blessed bunch
who look and sound and smell like me and who point to my faith
as their ideal. They will, of course, all be Christians, and they will
marry Christians and beget Christians, and not some watereddown
namby-pamby type, either, but fire-breathing and soulgrowing
Christians, members of the church of Christ, saved by
grace and fired with an obstinate belief in the black and white.
Give me that old-time religion! Yes, Lord!3

It is all laid out for me, both in the Bible and in the talks our
Sunday school teachers give us. I know my future as I know the
St. Louis Cardinals lineup from the tinny transistor I sneak into
my bed on game nights: Bob Gibson, Ted Simmons, Matty Alou,
Lou Brock, José Cruz, and the man who will ultimately betray
my faith in baseball and become a hated Yankee, Joe Torre. Those
Cardinals will win the pennant one day, but I will be a Christian
today.

The sanctuary in which I walk is a high-ceilinged, cavernous
room covered completely—walls and ceiling—in knotty pine that
holds my secret sin. When I am bored—and during three-hour
Sunday-morning services I am often bored—I attempt to count
the knots in the panels behind the preacher. I lose count and start
again, lose count and start again. I feel guilty about that, but I
am sitting through three sermons a week and once I recognize the
preacher’s theme (sin, mercy, salvation), I start counting knots.

The room seats roughly seven hundred souls. I say roughly,
because we never fill it. It was built amid much discussion and
hard feelings at a time when my church was among the fastestgrowing
Christian groups in the country. Of course we would fill
it, we told one another, even if our regular Sunday-morning attendance
hovered around three hundred or so. God would provide.
We just needed to have the right amount of pews. The
interior looks as we imagine the ark of Noah would look—spare,
with not one cross on display. Jesus hung on a real cross. Who
were we to use the emblem of his shame as decor? And why
would we, as girls, wear small golden crosses when the real one
was so much bigger and uglier?4 The pews are padded—another
discussion—and there are no prayer benches, for fear that they
would put us in company with the Catholics. Still, I never once
saw someone drop to his or her knees during public prayer. We
are, one visiting minister derided us, the only group of believers
that sits to sing and stands to pray.

In fact, the building was built on prayer—and a painful
schism. When you believe you are holy and have God on your side,
you easily cross over into being dogmatic. We split over paving
the parking lot. The anti-paving bunch argued that Jesus never
walked on pavement, and that we shouldn’t be so fine-haired as to
worry about muddying our good shoes as we scrambled to our
(padded) pews. And besides, the money could be used for a
greater purpose—namely, saving souls. The grandparents of this
crowd had cheered at the outcome of the Scopes Monkey Trial.
Consider them opponents of creeping and sweeping modernity.

The other bunch—and, oddly, my notoriously hidebound
family sided with them—said that paving a parking lot was right
and good, that it didn’t hurt to have a few creature comforts, and
the anti-paving crowd hadn’t kicked up a fuss over the fancy
new air-conditioning, now, had they? When the church splits, we
stay with the paved group. And when it splits another time over
whether the grape juice of the Lord’s Supper (the communion we
enjoyed every Sunday) should come from one cup, as Jesus may
have shared it, or from tiny shot glasses set into special circular
trays made for such an event, my family again sides with the progressives.
The others we derisively call “one-cuppers,” as damning
a phrase as “dumb-ass hillbilly.”

It would be my family’s one concession to change.
Among the literal-minded, schisms are just waiting to surface,
ready to crack open at any moment. Elsewhere, the other
churches of my faith—we had no central hierarchy, opting instead
for home rule by a group of older men, the elders—would
split and split again, over adding a pastoral counseling service,
or a daycare center—more modernity, in other words, but that
was later. For now, we felt the sheep were scattered, and when we
brought them home, they could clatter across pavement to sit in
padded pews and partake in the liquid part of the Lord’s Supper
from tiny shot glasses meant for just such a purpose—and likely
to form a barrier against the common cold as well.

A Broken Off Sword: Still Inside
By John K. Currie
I, too, emerged from a Midwest Fundamentalist upbringing---although more urban than that of Susan Campbell. I thought the primary thrust of her book would indicate great overlap with my roots. As I read her fine book, I found that not to be the case.

I learned from her book that a female raised in Fundamentalism has a DOUBLE DOSE of rules and regulations. Males raised in Fundamentalism still have the advantage of MALE PREROGATIVE. I believe that this male prerogative makes it easier for some males to break out of Fundamentalism---yet there are many males who wish to stay within Fundamentalism in order to benefit from male domination and male dominion.

I applaud Susan's ability to take a frank look at her Fundamentalist roots. She does so with mixed feelings. She wants to abandon much of that culture----yet at the same time she has a nostalgia for the close community and music from her Protestant Fundamentalism. I think her description of Fundamentalism as a sword that pierced her---with a broken piece of that sword still residing within her---will resonate with many who have a Fundamentalist background.

Fundamentalist to feminist
By Linzi
Dating Jesus is memoir of growing up as a girl in a fundamentalist Christian church. Susan Campbell was radically involved with her church - teaching youth groups, organizing buses to worship services, "knocking doors." But she runs into increasing difficulty of finding an acceptable place of her own within the church; as a woman, many positions are simply not open to her. The book chronicles her growing frustration that "if all believers are urged to stay on the straight and narrow, there seems to be an especially narrow road built for women."

Despite this, the tone of the book is never bitter or mean-spirited (as many recent publications about fundamentalist Christians have been). Campbell recounts her experiences and growth both with respect and an easy humor. And it's clear how much thought she has put into her faith - how well she knows her way around the Bible and around its rhetoric. As a feminist Christian, I really appreciated Dating Jesus. Not because it offers a solution to reconciling feminism with faith (if there is one), but because it adds a meaningful perspective to the discussion, going back to the Bible to discuss how women were treated and should be treated in the church. A very thoughtful and well-written book

Jesus was a feminst- thank you, Lord!
By Dr. Margo Maine
Dating Jesus demonstrates Campbell's unrivaled ability to use her personal experience to explore and and expose broader social issues, such as women's role in traditional Christian religions. While she writes of her experience as a fundamentalist, the struggles, themes, and disappointments will be familiar to so many women who have felt let down by their churches. Raised as a Catholic, I also had a strong relationship with Christ and with my church, until, painfully, I realized I would never be treated fairly there. Campbell poignantly reminds us that Jesus was a feminist and I needed that reminder desperately. This book is a great read for anyone who thinks about gender equity, women's rights, religion and the role of the church in our lives and in society. I have the privilege of reading Susan Campbell regularly as she writes for my local paper, the Hartford Courant. Her writing is always thought-provoking and gutsy with enriching personal insights and humor. Dating Jesus will get you thinking about your relationship with religion: it has already profoundly affected mine. Thank you Susan!
