This section of the river is not (as Baker points out) the Mississippi used to dramatic effect by Mark Twain and others. The text follows a family as they travel by canoe up the river, seeing a heron, deer, and loons along the way. However, the focus is not on the wildlife itself, but on the feelings nature evokes in people. The oil paintings are dramatic, yet lifelike. Focus is usually kept on the sights along the river, drawing attention to the animals. This is a title that might easily be used in a unit on nature study or to precede a nature walk. A wonderful journey on the North flowing Mississippi River

Sanna Baker does a marvelous job describing a part of the Mississippi River few people ever hear or know about. Baker's description makes you feel as if you are actually traveling with her on her journey. The illustrations bring Baker's story to life. The book is also a good source of factual information and Indian folklore. a wonderful resource for Social Studies teachers!
