Becoming Free, Remaining Free: Manumission and Enslavement in New Orleans, 1846--1862, by Judith Kelleher Schafer

For more than 150 years, the tales of hundreds of slaves and free people of color who used the judicial system to negotiate their freedom lay buried deep within the dusty records of the New Orleans district courts. Then Judith Kelleher Schafer spent fourteen years poring over Minute Books and trial transcripts, uncovering fascinating cases. In Becoming Free, Remaining Free, Schafer presents her findings and offers a profound analysis of slavery and manumission in the Crescent City.

Louisiana state law was unique in allowing slaves to contract for their freedom and to initiate a lawsuit for liberty. Schafer describes the ingenious and remarkably sophisticated ways slaves used the legal system to gain their independence and find a voice in a society that ordinarily gave them none. Showing that remaining free was often as challenging as becoming free, she also recounts numerous cases in which free people of color were forced to use the courts to prove their status. She further documents seventeen free blacks who, when faced with deportation, amazingly sued to enslave themselves.

Schafer's impressive detective work achieves a rare feat in the historical profession-the unveiling of an entirely new facet of the slave experience in the American South. With a rich bibliography sure to ease future research, Becoming Free, Remaining Free is a milestone in the historiography of slavery.

Best for beginning luthiers
By Gordon Rodda
After getting in over my head, I bought three books on wood bending: this one, Schleining's "The complete manual of wood bending" and "Fine Woodworking on Bending Wood." This one is oriented towards building guitars and other fine instruments. It omits coverage of milling and coopering wood to obtain curves, and the coverage of planning and drawing is superficial. One potentially useful section covers computing the length of a radius from the shape of the curve. The book has an okay narrative with a pleasant writing style, but I found it short on practical knowledge. Some of the writing is cute. For example, the author pushes homemade hot pipe irons, because the commercial ones cost "what one could dine on for a week." I would rather have been given an actual dollar figure. I've since learned that a good commercial one can be had for about $.... Unless you eat at Taco Bell... Overall, I recommend that most woodworkers will get more out of Schleining's book, which is filled with easy-to-read advice gleaned from years of practical experience. Schleining does not focus on building instruments, however. If you are looking for plans, this one has them: oval boxes, walking sticks, boat ribs, and chair backs.

Helpful for Steam Bending
By I. Ibbett
I bought this book for my boyfriend who is starting his own drum making company. He found the information on steam bending to be very helpful. The table at the back which details the possible bent radius of different woods was also a plus. There's a good section on creating a steam box. It is simple to read with some projects at the back. Very condensed infomation. The boat building section is also a positive if steam bending is what you're interested in. Very Good

Modernist Women Writers and War: Trauma and the Female Body in Djuna Barnes, H.D., and Gertrude Stein, by Julie Goodspeed-Chadwick

In Modernist Women Writers and War, Julie Goodspeed-Chadwick examines important avant-garde writings by three American women authors and shows that during World Wars I and II a new kind of war literature emerged -- one in which feminist investigation of war and trauma effectively counters the paradigmatic war experience long narrated by men.

In the past, Goodspeed-Chadwick explains, scholars have not considered writings by women as part of war literature. They have limited "war writing" to works by men, such as William Butler Yeats's poem "An Irish Airman Foresees His Death" (1919), which relies on a male perspective: a pilot contemplates his forthcoming flight, his duty to his country, and his life in combat. But works by Djuna Barnes, H.D., and Gertrude Stein set in wartime reveal experiences and views of war markedly different from those of male writers. They write women and their bodies into their texts, thus creating space for female war writing, insisting on female presence in wartime, and, perhaps most significantly, critiquing war and patriarchal politics, often in devastating fashion.

Goodspeed-Chadwick begins with Barnes, who in her surrealist novel Nightwood (1936) emphasizes the actual perversity of war by placing it in contrast to the purported perverse and deviant behavior of her main characters. In her epic poem Trilogy (1944--1946), H.D. validates female suffering and projects a feminist, spiritual worldview that fosters healing from the ravages of war. Stein, for her part, in her experimental novel Mrs. Reynolds (1952) and her long love poem Lifting Belly (1953), captures her experience of the everyday reality of war on the home front, within the domestic economy of her household.

In these works, the female body stands as the primary textual marker or symbol of female identity -- an insistence on women's presence in both the text and in the world outside the book. The strategies employed by Barnes, H.D., and Stein in these texts serve to produce a new kind of writing, Goodspeed-Chadwick reveals, one that ineluctably constructs a female identity within, and authorship of, the war narrative.

A Must Read!
By Erin J.
This book is a book that everyone must have regardless if you plan to read it in it's entirety. The author has a talent for exploring modernist issues among the female gender and is what I would consider a 'veteren' in the ongoing battle for women to write on the topics dominated by men. It is a book to top all modernist feminist books!

From School Library Journal
K-Gr 3-Sandy has always played with her younger sister, Carly, until Lily Jean, in her puffy red skirt and shiny red shoes, moves next door. With her considerable talents-playing the xylophone and drums, skating backward, and standing on her head-she is quite a presence, and Sandy seems to fall under her spell. Carly wants to play make-believe with the older girls, but not the demeaning roles Lily Jean gives her. When they play king and queen, she reluctantly becomes the dog, walking on four legs, crouching under the picnic table, and running off with Lily Jean's red shoe. In the mayhem that follows, Sandy stands up for her little sister and abandons Lily Jean, who is now willing to be anything, even nice, to play with the siblings. Illustrations are ink drawings, painted with watercolors and finished with oil and gouache accents. The three girls occupy most spreads, acting out their various roles in their backyard. Their movements are fanciful, and their faces are expressive. They play as real children do and work out their difficulties with both whimsy and humor. Simple yet natural dialogue makes this engaging tale a good choice for independent readers and as a read-aloud.-Mary Jean Smith, Southside Elementary School, Lebanon, TN (c) Copyright 2010. From Booklist
Carly loves playing in the backyard with her big sister, Sandy, until bossy Lily Jean moves in next door, takes over their games, and tries to shut Carly out. When Sandy and Lily Jean play house, Carly has to be the baby. When they play cowboys, she has to be the cow. When Carly finds a clever way to get back at Lily Jean, she gains her sisters support. Now the outsider, Lily Jean changes her tune. Wishinsky re-creates a common childhood experience through realistic dialogue and actions that convey every emotional shift. Just as engaging, Dentons watercolor illustrations capture the girls attitudes with gestures and facial expressions that speak volumes. Well paced and fine for reading aloud, this picture book has universal appeal, since every child whos encountered a mean kid will delight in watching the tables turned on Lily Jean. Preschool-Grade 2. --Carolyn Phelan

Review from Books That Heal Kids
By Books That Heal Kids
As an elementary school counselor I am always on the hunt for great social skills books like this one. Every K-3 class I read this to benefited in their friendships, sibling relationships, and helped curb bullying behavior. There is a whole lot of bossing around going on in the story. Lily Jean is on a power trip and her behavior got a ton of disapproval from students. Carly is picked on because she is the little sister and Lily Jean wants to have Sandy all to herself. But what blessed my heart was how sweet and caring big sister Sandy is to Carly. She sticks up for her. It was a great stopping point to talk about how we need to look out for our siblings and make sure they are being treated with kindness. Carly sticks up for herself too and lets Lily Jean know she can hang with her and Sandy if she is nice. That's their friendship rule for Lily Jean. Stop being bossy and start being nice or go play alone. Lots of kids need to hear this truth. It's okay to say NO to bad behavior. If you have a bossy child or notice your own child dealing with a bossy kid.... read this to them and discuss how to stop the behavior. Lily Jean becomes a kind friend in the end.....liked that. I sometimes get annoyed with books that don't help the bully out. These kids can change!

A really helpful book about bullying
By Vic
This is a great book and every child should be read it! It's a story that my kids love - its so real to them and well written. It shows a positive way to deal with a bullying situation and also shows a child who might bully that they can choose to do things differently too.

A childhood shaped by her zestful aunt Nan Dean of Tuscaloosa County, Alabama; a girlhood spent in Oak Ridge ("Atom City"), Tennessee; a journey north to a seedy seaside town where a stripper named Angela the Upside-Down Girl is her first neighbor—these are only some of the geographical and spiritual journeys in this dazzling, seriously funny guide to the art of being human.

Amazon.com Review
The loose-linked remembrances Emily Hiestand packs into Angela the Upside-Down Girl reveal a tongue tucked firmly in cheek, an eye for social travesty, and a flair for wry, evocative description. Fresh from the American South with a carload of art-school friends, Hiestand alights in a down-at-the-heels seaside town near Boston, Massachusetts, where the houses boast fake rock siding that resembles "giant mixed nuts inexplicably plastered to the wall." The eponymous Angela is a stripper who peels off clothes whilst standing on her head and earnestly lectures others on the importance of being limber. Shuttling across time and latitude lines, Hiestand recalls growing up in Tennessee's "Atom City," where Manhattan Project physicists developed the bomb that razed Hiroshima and where geek chic ruled. She writes ruefully and wonderfully about trying to document the lives led by her grandmother's clan in the deeper South. Along with some memorable stories are hours of tape recording full of "hisses, things being bumped, sudden cries" and surprising turns of thought as Aunt Mary declares while "talking about a Kodak camera, 'We wore brassieres. Yes, we did.'" Although uneven, Hiestand's tales are often very engaging. --Francesca Coltrera

From Publishers Weekly
Although she now lives with her husband in Cambridge, Mass., several of the engrossing memories in this collection of reprinted essays deal with the author's 1950's childhood in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The town was the largest storehouse of weapons-grade uranium, and her father was a lawyer for the Atomic Energy Commission. Hiestand (The Very Rich Hours) relates the unusual experience of growing up in "atom town," as well as her affinity for the eccentric rural Alabama relatives she and her brothers were taken to visit on long automobile trips in their parents' Chrysler. The title piece is an amusing description of how Hiestand first moved out of the South to a Boston coastal town and attended a performance given by her neighbor, Angela, who was a striptease artist in Boston's infamous "Combat Zone." Of particular interest is Hiestand's account of how she decided to become a white member of Union, a black church in Boston where she found good will and community. Hiestand's book is compelling for its calm.

From Library Journal
This is a sentimental journey through the author's past, a past that includes eccentric Southern relatives, a comfortable childhood in Oak Ridge, TN, where her father worked for the Atomic Energy Commission, and a move with college friends to the alien Yankee Boston. Hiestand (The Very Rich Hours: Travels in Orkney, Belize, the Everglades and Greece (LJ 9/15/92) has written a series of affecting and familiar essays, several of which have been published elsewhere, about growing up in the Fifties and Sixties. She talks about the life of the triple-decker she has spent much of her married life in and her experiences as a white member of a predominantly black congregation in a northern Baptist church and only briefly about Angela, the not-so-girlish neighbor who made a living by stripping while standing on her head. Well written and yet rather aimless, these essays make for pleasant reading. For larger public libraries.ALinda M. Kaufmann, Freel Lib., Massachusetts Coll. of Liberal Arts, North Adams, MA

Reviewers loving Angela...what a surprise!
By chucke@tiac.net
[An] enchanting new book of essays.... Many personal essayists today try to capture our interest by being confessional but run the risk of revealing, like clumsy strippers, what we'd really rather not see. Hiestand has taken the more unusual risk of writing about the quotidian, and produced a tour de force. "Oooouuuweee!" as her cousin Bill would say. What a good book this is. --Boston Sunday Globe Book Review
Angela the Upside-Down Girl is about how to live creatively, see life through an artist's eye. With a subversive sense of humor and a wicked ability to pierce convention, [Hiestand] takes us on her journey to discover a meaningful sense of place in a chaotic world. Her place turns out to be North Cambridge, which she describes with the freshness and originality of Joyce in Dublin...
Angela the Upside-Down Girl reveals Emily Hiestand's exceptional talents which include an artist's eye for color and form, a cu! ltural anthropologist's ability to get people to tell their stories, and a poet's facility to express what is felt but not seen. --Cambridge Chronicle
Rich, revealing, and often hilarious... This book travels between only two places...but it travels so deeply into each place, both their pasts and their presents, that you come away from it feeling enlightened and enticed, and ready to hop on the next train heading north or south. --Hope Magazine
...and I say, also, "What a good book this is!"

Both Transcendental and Funny, An Eloquent Witness
By A Customer
Angela the Upside-Down Girl is a revelation. Emily Hiestand is one of Robert Frost's true poets, "one upon whom nothing is lost." As she trains an eye of the rarest perception on the world we thought we knew, we discover the heart of light within ordinary and not-so-ordinary things. I marvel at her scope: her Weltyesque Aunt Nan Dean; her eloquent witness to the power of faith and community at Union Baptist Church; her love affair with automotive neon, which manages (as Emerson never could) to be both transcendental and funny; and, of course, there's Angela, whose gravity-defying grace can be seen as a figure for the whole book. But perhaps most engaging of all is the voice of our guide--Hiestand herself--the unifying principle through the book's many travels, wise, witty, shimmering in its clarity, a wonderful companion.

The Martyrdom of Abolitionist Charles Torrey (Antislavery, Abolition, and the Atlantic World), by E. Fuller Torrey

During his brief yet remarkable career, abolitionist Charles Torrey -- called the "father of the Underground Railroad" by his peers -- assisted almost four hundred slaves in gaining their freedom. A Yale graduate and an ordained minister, Torrey set up a well-organized route for escaped slaves traveling from Washington and Baltimore to Philadelphia and Albany. Arrested in Baltimore in 1844 for his activities, Torrey spent two years in prison before he succumbed to tuberculosis. By then, other abolitionists widely recognized and celebrated Torrey's exploits: running wagonloads of slaves northward in the night, dodging slave catchers and sheriffs, and involving members of Congress in his schemes. Nonetheless, the historiography of abolitionism has largely overlooked Torrey's fascinating and compelling story.

The Martyrdom of Abolitionist Charles Torrey presents the first comprehensive biography of one of America's most dedicated abolitionists. According to author E. Fuller Torrey, a distant relative, Charles Torrey pushed the abolitionist movement to become more political and active. He helped advance the faction that challenged the leadership of William Lloyd Garrison, provoking an irreversible schism in the movement and making Torrey and Garrison bitter enemies. Torrey played an important role in the formation of the Liberty Party and in the emergence of political abolitionism. Not satisfied with the slow pace of change, he also pioneered aggressive abolitionism by personally freeing slaves, likely liberating more than any other person. In doing so, he inspired many others, including John Brown, who cited Torrey as one of his role models.

E. Fuller Torrey's study not only fills a substantial gap in the history of abolitionism but restores Charles Torrey to his rightful place as one of the most dedicated and significant abolitionists in American history.

The Martyrdom of Abolitionist Charles Torrey, By E. Fuller Torrey MD
By David R Boyd
E.Fuller Torrey writes again in his scientifically based style and brings in relevant social and political determining features. I must read for any serious student and made understandable to the casual historian. A previous critique below;

The Martyrdom of Abolitionist Charles Torrey, By E. Fuller Torrey MD
My dear classmates, the following is an unsolicited and unpaid critique of E. Fuller Torrey's new book on the life story of his heroic relative Charles Fuller, better known as the “Father of the Underground Railroad”. C Fuller’s important contributions to ending slavery in the United States in the early nineteenth century had been for the most part lost to history, and were most admirably resurrected by our colleague E Fuller Torrey.
I found this biography of CT to be engaging, well documented and enlightening with several new perspectives. Important social-historical themes were presented along with the simultaneous occurrence of CT’s bravery, inspiration and leadership to move the abolition movement into the political arena. In this, CT and his comrades change the playing field and set up an irreparable schism between the New vs. the Old Abolitionists. This split and political maneuvering establishes the ground rules for other “special interests groups down the road, including the Temperance and woman’s suffrage and beyond. CT, however, goes further into “active” by assisting in the escape (i.e. stealing) of slaves and transporting in person along the First Line of the Underground Railroad that started in Baltimore MD and went onto Albany NY. He documents some 400 successful trips. I particularly enjoyed that CT’s slave holding targets were prominent Southern Congressman and White House connected officials. And, upon success CT would write letters to those he “robbed” detailing the success of the UGRR trip and safe emancipation in Canada. What a Guy! There are several other important sub-themes in E Fuller’s book that include historic and contemporary social and organization behavior patterns including political infighting over ideas and mechanisms, passive aggressiveness and hypocrisy,--the stuff of humankind, especially in times of critical issues. Those of you that think the US political scene is now at its worst need to read this book.
I found this book enchanting as a mystery novel with unexpected outcomes and revelations. I am somewhat familiar with this historical period but not to the detail of the Underground Railroad described by E Fuller. Other research and by later analysis estimate that 6000 individuals were successfully transported to freedom. Charles Torrey showed others the effectiveness of these transports, and encouraged many other Conductors in the northern states. CT’s target population was high profile slaves in the District of Columbia. These irritated the Southern establishment, encouraged others to catch the UGRR to the Promised Land and mellowed northern public opinion beyond the Religious Abolitionist fringe group. These actions were instrumental to the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. And these brought forth a series of Nullification “Freedom” Laws in northern states. And step by step, the American Civil war.
This is a great read and I highly recommend. it to the class. And, we also invite to visit and tour the Antietam Battlefield probably the most important intellectual turning point in the Civil War. Lincoln was looking for a win from which he could announce his Emancipation Proclamation. This battle changed the war goals from “Reunion” to the Final Abolition of Slavery in the USA.
Again Fuller, thank you an excellent book, an enjoyable and educational read. I am proud to see your defense of CT’s reputation and historical significance in Assessment in the last chapter. Nice Work.
Thank you, and Season’s Greetings, drb
David R Boyd MDCM

The Pastor Who Fought Slavery
By AvidReader
Did you know that before the Civil War there were dozens of men locked up in jail for running the Underground Railroad? Charles T Torrey was a pastor who couldn't keep his religion in the pulpit. He chose to love his neighbor by enabling hundreds of slaves to escape on the Underground Railroad. And he even had the courage to target slaves owned by U.S. Congressmen! This is the true story of a side of Civil War history that is simply amazing. The research is excellent and the writing very entertaining. This book belongs in every Civil War library!

These charming mechanical contraptions will captivate anyone who operates them—and creative woodworkers will find them fun to make. “Quite impressive...[Frost] offers colorful drawings. Designs include a dancing lumberjack, an exercising couple, and many more, all powered by handcrank or wind. This title is a nice departure from woodworking titles that require expensive materials and measurements to 1/64". Recommended.”—Library Journal.

The only book on making automata with actual plans
By Dug North
This book features fourteen projects. Each project has a bit of text, a photo, and many nice vector illustrations detailing the project's construction. The artist's work is colorful, assorted, and playful. People determined to build an automaton are sure to find a project in this book that speaks to them.

For a visually oriented person who doesn't need every step spelled out, this book is a gem. The drawings are very clear and complete and there is some text to help you through the tricky parts.

In sum, if you have even a little experience working with wood and would like to build automata, this book will be invaluable.

A Beautiful Book
By michael mccarthy
This is the best of the mechanical/whirligig books I've run across. Beautiful color photographs and detailed illustrations of Frost's very strange toys including dancing lumberjacks, boxing angels and demons, machine-gunning whirligigs, and the wonderfully painted 'houses' that hold the hand-cranks that give life to these creatures. An excellent resource for toy and wood-working ideas.

Re-released with New Title
By J. B. Dunn
His new (2007) book, "Making Mad Toys and Merchanical Marvels in Wood", is exactly the same, word for word. Either book is terrific, you just don't need to buy both.

Uncovering Race: A Black Journalist's Story of Reporting and Reinvention, by Amy Alexander

From an award-winning black journalist, a tough-minded look at the treatment of ethnic minorities both in newsrooms and in the reporting that comes out of them, within the changing media landscape.

From the Rodney King riots to the racial inequities of the new digital media, Amy Alexander has chronicled the biggest race and class stories of the modern era in American journalism. Beginning in the bare-knuckled newsrooms of 1980s San Francisco, her career spans a period of industry-wide economic collapse and tremendous national demographic changes.

Despite reporting in some of the country’s most diverse cities, including San Francisco, Boston, and Miami, Alexander consistently encountered a stubbornly white, male press corps and a surprising lack of news concerning the ethnic communities in these multicultural metropolises. Driven to shed light on the race and class struggles taking place in the United States, Alexander embarked on a rollercoaster career marked by cultural conflicts within newsrooms. Along the way, her identity as a black woman journalist changed dramatically, an evolution that coincided with sweeping changes in the media industry and the advent of the Internet.

Armed with census data and news-industry demographic research, Alexander explains how the so-called New Media is reenacting Old Media’s biases. She argues that the idea of newsroom diversity—at best an afterthought in good economic times—has all but fallen off the table as the industry fights for its economic life, a dynamic that will ultimately speed the demise of venerable news outlets. Moreover, for the shrinking number of journalists of color who currently work at big news organizations, the lingering ethos of having to be “twice as good” as their white counterparts continues; it is a reality that threatens to stifle another generation of practitioners from “non-traditional” backgrounds.

In this hard-hitting account, Alexander evaluates her own career in the context of the continually evolving story of America’s growing ethnic populations and the homogenous newsrooms producing our nation’s too often monochromatic coverage. This veteran journalist examines the major news stories that were entrenched in the great race debate of the past three decades, stories like those of Elián González, Janet Cooke, Jayson Blair, Tavis Smiley, the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina, and the election of Barack Obama.

Uncovering Race offers sharp analysis of how race, gender, and class come to bear on newsrooms, and takes aim at mainstream media’s failure to successfully cover a browner, younger nation—a failure that Alexander argues is speeding news organizations’ demise faster than the Internet.

Review
“Amy Alexander writes with the precision of the seasoned journalist she is and the expansiveness of the wise cultural critic she has become. Her book is at once a trenchant look at the competitive world of the highest reaches of journalism and an on-the-ground narrative of the transformations in the ways we understand race, identity, and work. Her experience is unique, but her perspective is universal.”─Henry Louis Gates Jr., author of Colored People

“Amy Alexander has done it! A gifted storyteller . . . she has written the essential memoir for journalists of color. . . . A powerful and irresistible narrative that introduces us to one of the most important African American journalists in the United States and helps us better understand the world of print and online journalism.”—Ruben Navarrette Jr., author of A Darker Shade of Crimson

“In wrestling with two difficult subjects—the challenges faced historically by people of color in the American news media, and the recent usurpation of traditional journalism by the Internet—Alexander writes with a clearly felt sense of passion and urgency, and she thoughtfully discusses key events of the last few decades, such as the Rodney King incident and its aftermath and the questionable role of media stars during traumatic events such as Hurricane Katrina and the Haiti earthquake.”—Kirkus Reviews

"A timely and compelling look at issues of race and lack of diversity that have dogged America's newsrooms for generations."—Tananarive Due, American Book Award winner

“Amy Alexander's analysis of the damage done to public awareness and understanding throughout the 20th century because of the failure of traditional journalism to adequately integrate staff could not come at a better time. It reminds consumers today that though they now have access to an integrated rainbow of sources of news online the responsibility now shifts to them to integrate the sources of news and opinion they aggregate.”—Bill Kovach, author of The Elements of Journalism: What Newspeople Should Know and The Public Should Expect

Collis' Zouaves: The 114th Pennsylvania Volunteers in the Civil War, by Edward J. Hagerty

Led by the enthralling and controversial colonel Charles H. T. Collis, the 114th Pennsylvania Infantry was in many ways unique among the regiments serving in the Union Army. In Collis' Zouaves, Edward J. Hagerty reconstructs the Civil War experiences of this unusual group of soldiers who embraced the flamboyant uniform style made famous by the French army's Zouaves. Recruited in the summer of 1862 from Philadelphia and surrounding counties, the regiment battled Stonewall Jackson in the Shenandoah Valley campaign and went on to participate in many of the major battles of the war, including Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Petersburg.

A scholarly, but absorbing work that reads like a novel.
By A Customer
While something of a "Civil War buff", I'm not onegiven to re-enactments and such. But I do enjoy books about the CivilWar that are historically accurate and most of all, do not bore me! Mr. Hagerty's tome fulfills both requirements. It's the story of the 114th Pennsylvania regiment, whose members were culled mostly from the Philadelphia area. They were a true cross-section of mid-19th century society, representing not only the trades and professions, but every degree of human courage (and cowardice) one can imagine. Much has changed since the 1860's, but the traits, trials, and frailties of Homosapiens remains a constant. This concept is key to the entertainment value of "Collis' Zouaves". Hagerty brings main characters to life, with an emphasis on historical accuracy. Letters, stories, and in many cases photographs, give the reader a "first-hand" feel to the narrative. For Civil War buffs, this book is a "must-have". For the rest of us, with or without a direct interest in the Civil War, Mr. Hagerty has accomplished what seems to be so rare: a history book that's meticulously researched, yet fun to read. In my book, it's a "must-have" for every American. I know I'll read it again.
