PreS-K--Joey's stepfather, Bill, tries to make friends, but the boy wants his real father. It takes most of his kindergarten year for him to understand that all the adults in his life love him and that he, too, has enough love to go around for all of them. When the winter holidays come, he prepares gifts for his mother, father, and stepfather, and the story ends with Joey snuggled up with Bill. His mother has very little presence in this story; she is mostly seen hovering in the background of the pleasant, colored-pencil illustrations. Instead the book focuses on the relationship between the boy and his two male role models. Although this is a simple, rosy picture of how reconstituted families manage to adjust, the basic message will be reassuring for youngsters who think that physical distance from loved ones cancels out affection. Great for when dad still involved and step dad comes into picture

It has been so hard finding a book that fits our situation, but this one was perfect! It is about a 5/6 year old and how he feels when a stepdad comes into his life. He is afraid he will lose his dad, but he doesn't and he still spends time with his dad while getting used to the stepdad in his life. This has been a real fear for my 5 year old child too - that a step dad means that his dad will be replaced - and this book did wonders for him. At one point Joey learns that, "love was like the sand on the beach. There was so much to share that Joey would always have enough to go around. He could love them all: Mommy, Daddy, and Bill." There is even a page where the stepdad puts the child in time out even when the boy says, "you aren't my real dad." So this book addresses real concerns and real situations and has been a great help during our transition!
