George Henry White: An Even Chance in the Race of Life (Southern Biography Series), by Benjamin R. Justesen

Although he was one of the most important African American political leaders during the last decade of the nineteenth century, George Henry White has been one of the least remembered. A North Carolina representative from 1897 to 1901, White was the last man of his race to serve in the Congress during the post-Reconstruction period, and his departure left a void that would go unfilled for nearly thirty years. At once the most acclaimed and reviled symbol of the freed slaves whose cause he heralded, White remains today largely a footnote to history. In this exhaustively researched biography, Benjamin R. Justesen rescues from obscurity the fascinating story of this compelling figure's life and accomplishments.

The mixed-race son of a free turpentine farmer, White became a teacher, lawyer, and prosecutor in rural North Carolina. From these modest beginnings he rose in 1896 to become the only black member of the House of Representatives and perhaps the most nationally visible African American politician of his time. White was outspoken in his challenge to racial injustice, but, as Justesen shows, he was no militant racial extremist as antagonistic white democrats charged. His plea was always for simple justice in a nation whose democratic principles he passionately loved. A conservative by philosophy, he was a dedicated Republican to the end. After he retired from Congress, he remained active in the fight against racial discrimination, working with national leaderas of both races, from Booker T. Washington to the founders of the NAACP.

Through judicious use of public documents, White's speeches, newspapers, letters, and secondary sources, Justesen creates an authoritative and balanced portrait of this complex man and proves him to be a much more effective leader than previously believed.

From Booklist
Justesen chronicles the life and times of an extraordinary man, rescuing from relative obscurity the first black man to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives. White was born into a poor North Carolina farm family. Through personal ambition and determination, he went on to become educator, lawyer, businessman, and politician. Justesen details the politics of the South during and after Reconstruction, black loyalty to the Republicans (the party of Lincoln), and the virulent backlash of white racists. White was actively engaged in local party politics, embroiled in everything from reapportionment efforts to a heated rivalry with his brother-in-law Henry Cheatham. White challenged racial injustice and social inequities, sponsoring anti-lynching bills and allying with other prominent black leaders, including Booker T. Washington. When racial politics drove blacks from the Republican party, White maintained his struggle for racial justice but was unable to recover professionally. It would be nearly 30 years before another black man was elected to the U.S. Congress. This book is a fascinating look at the machinations of politics and the personal and professional challenges to the first black U.S. Congressman. Vanessa Bush

"Justesen has recovered a compelling story and a significant life. Shrewd and insightful, the book offers an important reminder that before white supremacy and disfranchisement, African Americans exercised considerable political power in North Carolina and the South." -- North Carolina Historical Review

"Justesen adroitly uses limited sources to make an excellent case for moving White from the footnotes to the main text of black history." -- Journal of Southern History

"Justesen paints a full portrait of one of the more obscure African American politicians of the late nineteenth century." -- The Journal of Negro History

Justesen rescues from obscurity the fascinating story of George Henry White, one of the most important -- yet least remembered -- African American political leaders during the last decade of the nineteenth century. Little-Known Renaissance Man From NC
By Laura G. Carter
George Henry White represented North Carolina in Congress from 1897 until 1901. When he left, he became the last man of his race to be elected to Congress during the post-Reconstruction era, leaving a void which would not be filled for nearly 30 years (North Carolina didn't elect another African-American to Congress until 1992). White became, sadly, an historical footnote.
Benjamin Justesen has performed an intense labor of love in resurrecting White's story. Armed with prodigious amounts of careful research - reflected in the copious footnotes sprinkled throughout the text - and his own personal determination to bring this biography to public attention, Justesen has realized his dream of writing George Henry White's life story after becoming acquainted with his subject while working as a reporter in the 1970s.
He brings to life the issues and prejudices of the period, which only serve to magnify the high principles to which White held himself. Believing that education and one's own hard work got one where one wanted to go, White proved his beliefs in a time when Southern public sentiment was gradually moving into its shameful Jim Crow era.
A lawyer, politician, banker, real estate developer, family man and man of faith, George Henry White is a model for anyone today - black or white - who thinks, "I cannot." His life is an example to us all, and his biography a fascinating look at both a man and an era in Southern history.

The man of the hour at the turn of the century
By Benjamin R. Justesen
At the outset: I'm the author, and of course, I'm partial to my own book. But I'm also immersed in the subject, having spent the last four years of my life bringing George White's story to readers. George White was a fascinating man, but one about whom little is known today: the first African American to serve in Congress in the 20th century (retiring in 1901) and the last of 22 to serve from the South after the Civil War until the 1970s. He was a stalwart Republican, and served alone in the Congress for four years. But he was more than a token--an accomplished teacher, lawyer, prosecutor, developer and banker. He deserves to be studied in depth; my attempt is the baseline, a painstakingly drawn outline, based on a careful study of limited evidence. Judge for yourself--and then place him in his rightful position in our history, as the intriguing, honest, flawed but eminently admirable individual he was. I recommend him--and this book--highly!

A Man Ahead of His Time
By Jessica Lecroy
I know the author of this book, and that is what first interested me in reading it. But I quickly learned there was more to George White than the novelty of being the only African American in Congress (1897-1901). He was a talented, accomplished man--ahead of his time in choosing to combine successful public and private careers with an unusual attention to the less fortunate of his own race. He faced a momentous decision at the turn of the century: accept the new segregation oin the United States, and the disfranchisement that came with it, or condemn both and fight them. he chose the latter, and effectively ended his own political career. But he remains a fascinating man, and one well worth reading about. I recommend you read this book!

THE REAL DEAL
By David M. Goode
Back in the early 1970s when kung fu-mania was exploding and every layman on the street was naming Bruce Lee as the greatest martial artist who ever lived I would always ask them how they would rank Mas Oyama. And as laymen they had no idea about who I was talking about as that Oyama was not a movie star, though in later years there would be more than a few movies made about his life.Mas Oyama is an icon in the world of martial arts. The founder of kyokushin-kan karate Oyama was known for his super-human feats of strength and endurance such as his 100-man kumite and his unarmed battles against bulls.Kyokushinkai karate is known as the "fighting karate" and it's founder practiced what he preached.Mas Oyama's Essential Karate teaches the very basics of kyokushinkai demonstrating katas,setting-up excercises,self-defense and breaking techniques and is lavishly illustrated with photographs.I wish the book would have featured a mini-biography of Oyama himself, but it's still a great guide for a beginner to start off with.

A definative explanation of KyokushinKia-Kan Karate
By A Customer
Mas Oyama's book "The Essential Karate" is perhaps the
easiest source for a beginning martial artist to use to
gain knowledge about this interesting artform.

KyokushinKai-Kan Karate, also known as the assocaition
for the search in ultimate truth in Karate, was founded in
the early 1950's. Matsutatsu Oyama, the founder, created a
Karate style that is derived from Shotokan and Goju-Ryu. In
doing so he started one of the most powerful and most widely
respected martial forms. Kyokushin is extremely popular with
over ten million practitioners in the world today.

This book will enable the beginner and the expert to unravel
Master Oyama's thoughts on how this art should be performed.
It will explain in detail and with photos all of the basic
manuevers. Each page is well illustrated with reasons why
each attack or defense is done. Also included are basic self
defenses and a history of martial arts.

Due to both of Master Oyama's other book being out of print
this manuel is a indespensable tool for any martial artist.
Further more it is clearly the best available and affordable
tool for the adherent to this style. I cannot recommend this
book highly enough. It will put the extra umph into each
punch and kick that you do.

Halleck: Lincoln's Chief of Staff, by Stephen E. Ambrose

Halleck is a challenged biography of controversial figure Union General-in-Chief Henry Wager Halleck, who was cast into negative stereotype by many historians since Appomattox more famously by Lincoln's secretary of the navy, Gideon Welles. The author argues that Halleck has been greatly underrated as a war theorist because of past writers' failure to do justice to his close involvement with movements basic to the development of the American military establishment. He concedes that "by all the touchstones used to judge great captains of the past, Halleck was a failure," but maintains he was nonetheless, "the 'Old Brains' of the Union Army in the time of the testing of the nation."

A Good Overview But Not A Full Biography

Stephen Ambrose's take on Henry Halleck is an interesting one but it is not a biography by any means. Ambrose offers little on Halleck's interesting pre-war career and almost nothing on his post-was commands. What Ambrose does offer is a quick sketch of Halleck's contribution to the Union war effort. While doing little with Halleck's personal life (you won't read this book and have a better understanding of this enigmatic general's character), Ambrose shows how Halleck helped Grant, Sherman and, especially, Lincoln during the war. Ambrose is at his best as he takes the reader from 1863 until the end of the war. One is left with the feeling that more could have been done covering Halleck's days in the West in 1861 and 1862 but admittedly the focus of Civil War historians remained on the East until recently. While not an attractive personality, Halleck ranks as one of the most important generals of the war and this book serves as an excellent introduction and appreciation of "Old Brains."

An excellent book!

This biography of Henry W. Halleck provides great insights into
the life & career of one of the Civil War's most vilified figures. Stephen Ambrose provides a balanced overview and keen
analysis of Halleck and his contributions to the Union war effort. Studying the full story of Halleck's numerous and very
valuable contributions will be an eye-opening experience for many students of the Civil War. Though he may not have been a "great captain," he was an extremely effective organizer and judge of military talent, The "George C. Marshall" of the Civil War! Buy and read this book - you'll thank yourself!

Insightful military biography
By lordhoot
Henry Halleck, that is the name that would rise a storm of scorn or derision among most Civil War readers. General Halleck have not been well regarded by most Civil War historians since the Civil War. This short biography (90% of 212 pages of text are on his Civil War years) by Stephen Ambrose tries to take a revisionist tack to Hallack's accomplishments, talents and his contribution to the Union cause. Ambrose's effort was to show that Halleck was bit more then just a paper general but an effective organizer and coordinator of the Union war effort. While admitting that Hallack was no battlefield general, his massive intellect on military matter was more suited for support roles to the armies at front, a classical bookworm general.
The book was originally published back in 1962 so the writing may not be as good as Ambrose's later efforts. But its still nicely readable and provides some very insightful views on Halleck's role in the Civil War. Whether you agree with Ambrose or not, is up to you.

What would life be like with no clocks and no calendars? How would you know when to get up in the morning? Long, long ago, all people could do was watch the sun and moon and try to figure things out. Eventually, they made simple clocks like sundials.

From School Library Journal
Grade 2-4-This is a succinct, child-friendly history of how time came to be measured, from our early ancestors, who noted how the sun traveled across the sky, to the ancient Egyptians, who used "Shadow Stick clocks" to mark its path, through present-day quartz and atomic clocks. Wells discusses the Egyptians' lunar and solar calendars and the Roman calendar, and goes on to explain time zones, using meridian lines. Analogies such as "WITHOUT TIME PASSING BY, you couldn't play a computer game or eat a bowl of ice cream-" help children understand the concepts. The characters in the pen-and-acrylic illustrations look a bit like a cross between B.C. and Doonesbury comics; the hand-lettered text creates movement around the sometimes multiple images on a page, and the combination of art and words results in fun. A terrific teaching tool, enjoyable as a read-aloud or when read independently.

From Booklist
Gr. 2-5. With excitement and solid fact, Wells introduces the concept of time and how we measure it. The science is complex, whether Wells is considering time zones, changing seasons, or atomic clocks; but the picture-book format, with pen and acrylic illustrations of a boy, a girl, and a dog, roots the concepts in daily experience. The historical approach--from the sundial and the ancient Roman calendar to the pendulum and then quartz crystals--provides a step-by-step introduction to the amazing technological discoveries. Wells' chatty informal style will certainly help adults talk about the concepts with children, though the exclamatory tone and punctuation in almost every sentence are unnecessary. The amazing facts say it all. Hazel Rochman

Great way to teach my students about time

Book has lots of useful information, but too advanced for early elementary
By LP
This book is a very thorough explanation of how people have figured out ways to tell time (including time of day, time of year, etc.) throughout history. I have often seen it recommended for use in early elementary classrooms in conjunction with a unit on telling time, i.e. reading a clock. However, the book is really written at a more advanced level and students will not be able to understand it unless they already have quite a bit of background knowledge not typical of students at this level. For example, it explains the ways that the ancient Egyptians and Romans used to tell time, but this will not make any sense to a student who has never heard of these ancient civilizations. It also has explanations of the earth's rotation around the sun and the moon's rotation around the earth, another difficult concept for a student in K-2 to grasp because it is so abstract. Overall the book is very well done, but I gave it 3 stars and wrote this review for those teaching early elementary who have seen this book listed as a good literature connection for a unit on reading a clock. I would not recommend this book for this purpose.

I teach 2nd grade and my students love this thought-provoking book. I haven't found another that is better for getting students to think, and wonder, about time and how it is measured.

Review
The pleasures that await the reader just discovering the work of the Pulitzer-prize-winning poet are those delivered by her previous 18 volumes: her keen eye for telling detail, the surprise of the unexpected and, most important, the authoritative voice that portrays our world as both ordinary and enchanted, full of natural beauty and supernatural holiness.—Angela O'Donnell, America magazine

"From the small, the curious, and the commonly overlooked—grasshoppers, snow crickets, and whelks, for example—to the wild and intimidating, like coyotes, and, of course, the possibly mythical bear that haunts the Truro woods, the natural world is made more real and dangerous and, yet, inexplicably inviting in these poems. . . . There is even a baker's dozen of poems about Percy, her dog, a lovable recurring character in her work. In all, this book is an affirmation."—Library Journal, starred review

"Mary Oliver ranks among the finest poets the English language has ever produced. . . . Her poetry is rigorous, beautiful, well written, and offers genuine insights into the natural world."—Eli Lehrer, The Weekly Standard

"Mary Oliver's poetry is fine and deep; it reads like a blessing. Her special gift is to connect us with our sources in the natural world, its beauties and terrors and mysteries and consolations."—Stanley Kunitz

"Like Henry David Thoreau of Transcendentalist fame she is a naturalist whose attention to what used to be called the Book of Nature borders on both devotion and experimentation. Her poems . . . speak about the mysteries of mortality in a language that feels like home. . . . Mindfulness seems to be Oliver's métier, looking and listening her scientific method and contemplative practice."—Stephen Prothero, Search magazine

I'm very disappointed that Amazon has produced such ugly versions of Mary Oliver's poetry books. One page with have tiny print and the next huge. Some quality control is badly needed. The poetry is wonderful; the Kindle version is horrible. Oliver cares very much about how her poems look on a page so this poor treatment of her work is especially disturbing.

MAry Oliver never disappoints. I wasn't sure about having essays as well as poems but they were also wonderful. The Truro Bear is a subtle and wonderful poem which ends "when has happiness ever required much evidence to begin its leaf-green breathing?"

High Lonesome: The American Culture of Country Music, by Cecelia Tichi

What does the 'country' in country music mean? Most interpret country as a regional or folk music that belongs to people in the hills and in honky-tonks, but Cecelia Tichi argues that it is in fact a national music form, one that belongs to all Americans. In High Lonesome, she shows that country music is strongly linked to our nation's literature and art. Country music, Tichi argues, explores the same themes that have intrigued this country's premier writers and artists over three centuries: the American road, the meaning of home, class struggle, spiritual travail, and the persistent loneliness of the American character. These are obsessions that country music artists like Dolly Parton, Hank Williams, Rodney Crowell, Merle Haggard, and Emmylou Harris share with artists not thought of as 'pop'--Ralph Waldo Emerson, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Mark Twain, Thomas Cole, Edward Hopper, and Georgia O'Keefe. Generously illustrated with photographs of country music artists and images of American art, High Lonesome uses interviews and biographical profiles to provide an insider's look at the schooling, customs, demands, and discipline of country music--an art form that Tichi maintains is emphatically part of mainstream American culture. from the book When the poetry of Walt Whitman links up with the country music of Hank Williams, when Dolly Parton and Ralph Waldo Emerson pair up and Mark Twain and Emmylou Harris are found to have a common ground, and the vacationing traveler is also involved, then new ideas about cultural relations become possible. It is not a trivia question to ask, What does country music have in common with Thomas Jefferson, Walt Whitman, American painters Thomas Cole and Edward Hopper, and twentieth-century writers John Steinbeck and Jack Kerouac? Songs and partial songs found on the High Lonesome CD * indicates partial songs Dolly Parton, 'My Tennessee Mountain Home' Barry and Holly Tashian, 'Home' Emmylou Harris, 'Hickory Wind'* Steve Earle, 'Guitar Town' Robin and Linda Williams, 'Rolling and Rambling' Merle Haggard, 'Ramblin' Fever' Emmylou Harris, 'Lonely Street'* Emmylou Harris, 'A River for Him'* Hank Williams, 'I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry' Laurie Lewis, 'The Cowgirl's Song' Tex Ritter, 'High Noon' Dolly Parton, 'Wildflowers'* Eddy Arnold, 'Bouquet of Roses' Emmylou Harris, 'Roses in the Snow'* Emmylou Harris, 'Timberline'* Emmylou Harris, 'Red, Red Rose'* Emmylou Harris, 'Wayfaring Stranger'* Peter Rowan, 'Trail of Tears' Barry and Holly Tashian, 'Let Me See the Light' Kathy Chiavola, 'I Am a Pilgrim/We Are Pilgrims' Laurie Lewis, 'The Maple's Lament' Cody Kilby, 'Bill Cheatham' Rodney Crowell, 'Many a Long and Lonesome Highway'

From Booklist
Some maintain that country music is the country's music and reflects traditional American concerns. That's English professor Tichi's position, anyway, as she explores the links between country music and American literature and art. In country, she argues, story is paramount and told through lyrics that amount to folk poetry. With this thesis in mind, she examines in detail such common country themes as home, the road, loneliness, spiritual pilgrimage, and nature. She manages to avoid the academic's pitfall regarding pop music--condescension--but often seems to lack the longtime fan's empathy (she admits ignorance of country until just a few years ago). Also, she draws too many of her musical examples (some of which are heard on an accompanying CD) from younger performers whose accessible but watered-down styles have sparked country's recent resurgence but whose very popularity stacks the deck in favor of her argument that country remains firmly in the American cultural mainstream. Still, Tichi makes a compelling case for country music as a legitimate object of American studies. Gordon Flagg

From Kirkus Reviews
A dry exegesis of country music by the author of Electronic Hearth (1991). Tichi (English/Vanderbilt Univ.) is a novice fan of country music whose background is strongest in American literature and art. Proceeding thematically, she addresses common issues in American culture, including the tension between the individual and society, the lure of home versus the call of the road, and nature as both a nurturing and potentially dangerous force. Lacing together anecdotes, interviews, and analysis of songs, she comes to the conclusion that country music addresses many of the same topics as more ``serious'' art forms, making it ``emphatically [a] national music.'' While her discussions can be interesting, ultimately she offers little new to explain the popularity or quality of country music. The musicians she favors--Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell, Laurie Lewis, Nanci Griffith, and Barry and Holly Tashian--all come out of a folk-rock background (in the '70s, they would have been called singer/songwriters), so they naturally tend to take an intellectual, pseudoliterary approach to songwriting and performance. Tichi's musical knowledge is slim, leading to some factual errors, as when she ascribes ``Dueling Banjos'' to Earl Scruggs, though it was in fact recorded by Marshall Brickman and Eric Weissberg. And the comment that ``the ability to read music would be futile for bluegrass...the music simply moves too fast to be read off the page'' would come as a surprise to any classical violinist who's ever tackled Paganini. The book is accompanied by a CD that primarily focuses on new country acts; this material is readily available, and it would be surprising if a reader who was attracted to this book did not already own most of these recordings. A tip of the academic mortarboard towards the ten-gallon-hat crowd that will befuddle members of both groups. (122 b&w photos and 16-page color insert) -- Copyright ©1994, Kirkus Associates, LP. Review
The popular musical traditions of the rural black South, most notably the blues, have received from scholars of American history and culture richly deserved attention and analysis. Until now the same could not be said for the popular musical traditions of the rural white South. With High Lonesome Cecelia Tichi, savvy reader of and acute listener to country music, helps us negotiate the cultural discourse between country music and the myths of this country, never failing to show us a good time in the process.--William L. Andrews, University of Kansas

Tichi investigates popular music as a significant cultural indicator. . . . Country music reflects the complexities of home life and interpersonal relationships in such a way that it reverberates with the dilemmas of the metropolitan and suburban present.--Christian Science Monitor

[A] sophisticated and down-to-earth study. . . . [Tichi] examines the country phenomenon and tries to place it in historical and artistic perspective.--Parade

A daring but successful book. . . . Tichi takes country music seriously, and she gives the art form the kind of serious intellectual treatment that it has always needed and deserved.--Bill C. Malone, author of Country Music, U.S.A.

The book is gracefully written, jargon-free, highly original, and engaging throughout. THE GREAT CREOLE
By Shannon Deason
This is a very good book on a very deserving subject. Beauregard often gets overlooked, he was never as beloved as Lee or Stonewall Jackson, but he was capable, the man had a sharp mind and Lee understood this, even if Jefferson Davis did not. The book gives a fascinating look at this intriguing man, though being of Creole heritage I do wish the author had spent more time on Beauregards early life, he came from a first line Creole family and he was a top student at West Point, where he disinguished himself well. This is really the definitive book on Beauregard, highly recommended.

but hard to recommend for anyone but hardcore enthusiasts
By Robert Brandon Claycomb
Considered a classic. The writing is a bit stiff, and the scholarship is now a little out of date. Worth it for an overview of Beauregard's career, but hard to recommend for anyone but hardcore enthusiasts.

Composing Selves: Southern Women and Autobiography (Southern Literary Studies), by Peggy Whitman Prenshaw

In Composing Selves, award-winning author Peggy Whitman Prenshaw provides the most comprehensive treatment of autobiographies by women in the American South. This long-anticipated addition to Prenshaw's study of southern literature spans the twentieth century as she provides an in-depth look at the life-writing of eighteen women authors.

Composing Selves travels the wide terrain of female life in the South, analyzing various issues that range from racial consciousness to the deflection of personal achievement. All of the authors presented came of age during the era Prenshaw refers to as the "late southern Victorian period," which began in 1861 and ended in the 1930s. Belle Kearney's A Slaveholder's Daughter (1900) with Elizabeth Spencer's Landscapes of the Heart and Ellen Douglas's Truth: Four Stories I Am Finally Old Enough to Tell (both published in 1998) chronologically bookend Prenshaw's survey.

She includes Ellen Glasgow's The Woman Within, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings's Cross Creek, Bernice Kelly Harris's Southern Savory, and Zora Neale Hurston's Dust Tracks on a Road. The book also examines Katharine DuPre Lumpkin's The Making of a Southerner and Lillian Smith's Killers of the Dream.

In addition to exploring multiple themes, Prenshaw considers a number of types of autobiographies, such as Helen Keller's classic The Story of My Life and Anne Walter Fearn's My Days of Strength. She treats narratives of marital identity, as in Mary Hamilton's Trials of the Earth, and calls attention to works by women who devoted their lives to social and political movements, like Virginia Durr's Outside the Magic Circle.

Drawing on many notable authors and on Prenshaw's own life of scholarship, Composing Selves provides an invaluable contribution to the study of southern literature, autobiography, and the work of southern women writers.

Getting on Message: Challenging the Christian Right from the Heart of the GospelFrom Brand: Beacon Press

In the 2004 election, 80 percent of those who claimed "moral values" was the most important issue affecting their vote cast their ballots for Bush, as did 63 percent of frequent churchgoers. Since then, the Religious Right has continued to cement an association between "Christian" and "moral" values and conservative policies.

Getting On Message challenges this association from the very heart of the Christian tradition. These readable and incisive essays use biblical framing to discern the personal and social ethics that truly embody Christian values in the contemporary world.

Marilynne Robinson discusses the link between personal holiness and a generous spirit. Garret Keizer looks at the growing wealth/class divide from a Christian perspective. Rev. Heidi Neumark examines hospitality as a core Christian value. Rev. Chloe Breyer explores a justice criterion for women's decisions on abortion. Rev. Bill Sinkford asks what really constitutes a God-approved marriage and family. Getting On Message is a book for clergy, for politically active people of faith, and for progressive organizers and strategists who want to learn how to talk to religious believers about the values they share.

Not what I expected; better
By Michael Grello
There are several types of progressive critique of the religious right, all valuable in their own right. There is the "how the religious right violates the scripture", the "why the left is closer to the teachings of Christ and finally "what steps do we take to repair the damage they have done?" This book falls into the third category. The essays enclosed provide practical steps for progressive Christians heal the society that the right has wounded. Highly recommended.

Getting on Message
By K. Elliott
This is a must-have for progressive Christians who are desire an antedote to the viewpoints of the "Religious Right". Progressives have not been very adept at articulating what they believe with strength of conviction. This book is a compilation of essays from some brilliant thinkers who give theological grounding to what the "Left" has been saying all along.
