From Publishers Weekly
Subtle and stirring, this tale-within-a-tale begins with an affectionate exchange between an African American girl and her grandmother, then telescopes to encompass an electrifying moment fraught with personal and political significance. Grandma tells of sneaking off to town one sizzling summer day when she was a child, "planning on doing no good." Approaching a water fountain, the thirsty girl mistakes its "Whites Only" sign to mean that she should take off her shoes so that only her white socks will touch the step stool. A "big white man" grabs her and removes his belt to whip her-prompting African American bystanders to remove their shoes, too, and defiantly drink from the fountain. At home, the narrator's mother proclaims she can now go to town by herself, " 'cause you're old enough to do some good"; in town, "the 'Whites Only' sign was gone from that water fountain forever." Though Coleman (The Footwarmer and the Black Crow) complicates the story with some unnecessary subplots, the impact is strong. Geter's (Dawn and the Round-to-it) full- and double-page paintings can be hazy, but they conduct the story's considerable emotional charge. Ages 5-9.

From School Library Journal
Grade 2-4?In this story, a grandmother relates an incident from her childhood to her granddaughter. On a scorching hot Mississippi day, a little girl walks into town by herself to learn whether it really is possible to fry an egg on the sidewalk. Mission accomplished, she is on her way home when she stops for a drink of water. Interpreting the "whites only" sign on the water fountain to refer to socks, the African American child takes off her patent-leather shoes and has just begun to drink when an angry white man grabs her and pushes her to the ground. He threatens to "whup" her, but the black townspeople come to the girl's aid by taking off their shoes and drinking from the same fountain. The angry bigot then receives punishment at the hands of a local conjure man. Atmospheric paintings, smudged and moody, will draw readers into this gripping tale. However, the story has some unsettling elements. The protagonist is old enough to go into town alone, yet she is oblivious to the meaning of the "whites only" sign. Her certainty that the sign refers to white socks is also curious; knowing that is what it means implies some prior knowledge, but she clearly does not have the facts straight.?Anna DeWind, Milwaukee Public Library

From Booklist
Ages 5^-8. This begins with a grandmother telling a tale of her childhood in the segregated South: "You know, when I was a little girl, like yourself, I sneaked into town once. Yep, all by myself." All dressed up and hiding eggs in her pockets, the little girl walks down the road past the feared and revered Chicken Man, who supposedly has powers, including the ability to turn his enemies into chickens. In town, the girl breaks an egg on the sidewalk to see if it will really fry. Seeing a drinking fountain with a sign that says "Whites Only" and a step stool for children, she takes off her black shoes and steps up in her clean white socks. After a white man throws her to the ground, other black people step up to the fountain and drink. Then the Chicken Man joins them, he drinks from the fountain, points at the white man (a chicken later turns up at the fountain), and tells the child to go home. Impressionistic oil paintings sensitively illustrate the place, the time, the heat, and the child's emotions. Although the last part of the story is somewhat confusing, the book works as an effective portrayal of a child's innocence and her awakening to racism. Carolyn Phelan

One of my Favorite Cryptogram Books
By Katie
I have been doing cryptogram puzzles for quite a few years now, and there's nothing like the feeling of "breaking the code", and finding the hidden message lying within what appears to be just an unintelligible jumble of letters.

One of the things I really like about "The Great Book of Cryptograms" is that the puzzles, once solved, provide you with a meaningful, thought-provoking quote - and each "chapter" is filled with quotes from the same person (such as Aristotle & Aesop).

Because the author provides a thorough set of instructions re: how to go about solving this type of puzzle, this book is perfect for the novice and pro alike.

If you like cryptograms, or just enjoy trying to break codes, I highly recommend "The Great Book of Cryptograms" - it's one of the best I've seen.

City of Sacrifice: Violence From the Aztec Empire to the Modern Americas, by David L. Carrasco

At an excavation of the Great Aztec Temple in Mexico City, amid carvings of skulls and a dismembered warrior goddess, David Carrasco stood before a container filled with the decorated bones of infants and children. It was the site of a massive human sacrifice, and for Carrasco the center of fiercely provocative questions: If ritual violence against humans was a profound necessity for the Aztecs in their capital city, is it central to the construction of social order and the authority of city states? Is civilization built on violence?

In City of Sacrifice, Carrasco chronicles the fascinating story of Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital, investigating Aztec religious practices and demonstrating that religious violence was integral to urbanization; the city itself was a temple to the gods. That Mexico City, the largest city on earth, was built on the ruins of Tenochtitlan, is a point Carrasco poignantly considers in his comparison of urban life from antiquity to modernity.

Majestic in scope, City of Sacrifice illuminates not only the rich history of a major Meso american city but also the inseparability of two passionate human impulses: urbanization and religious engagement. It has much to tell us about many familiar events in our own time, from suicide bombings in Tel Aviv to rape and murder in the Balkans.

Review
A brilliant, provocative, timely, and eternal book.... We know that power, whatever its origin-sacred, natural, ethnic, contractual, or democratic-is an expression of violence. Davíd Carrasco now demonstrates a shattering, unsentimental truth: civilizations themselves are born and maintained by violence. —Carlos Fuentes

About the Author
Davíd L. Carrasco is professor of history of religions at Princeton University. Author and editor of many books, he is editor in chief of the Oxford Encyclopedia of Mesoamerican Cultures. He lives in Princeton, New Jersey.

Impenetrable Academic Jargon
By Cebes
The author rightly points out that scholars have largely avoided the topic of Aztec sacrifice, no doubt for political reasons (for fear that describing the horrible brutality of these practices might appear to be a justification for the European conquest). It is thus good to see someone face the topic directly. Nonetheless the book is a disappointment. Carrasco is addicted to unnecessary pseudo-technical jargon: "locative cosmology", "ortho-visus", "orientatio", "heterogeographical," etc., and to such mind-numbing phrasings such as "forefronting the locative nature of the city's final narrative." It is a challenge to choose the worst-written sentence in this book, so I'll pick two: "In this book, I extend the meaning of orientatio to include both the discovery and organization of central place and the sacrificial performances that have the power to reorganize, redistribute, and regenerate the central place as a culturally and politically meaningful environment." "The text and its interpretations suggest a redirecting of terms toward an expansion of categories to join a hierarchy of meaning to a unity of meaning when exploring synesthesias in urbanized societies." Unfortunately, all too often bad writing is an indicator of sloppy thinking. The author seems to spend as much time telling us what he will accomplish in this book as actually accomplishing it (he constantly announces that he will "carry the discussion further" or "gain some insight" or provide a "new understanding" or "enlarge our understanding"). The book does present some interesting facts about the practice of Aztec human sacrifice, but in the end, the interpretations are rather thin (and of course couched in pseudo-profound lingo, e.g."alignments are viewed as integral but subordinate to larger symmetries"). Nor does the book live up to its pretentious subtitle: "the role of violence in civilization." The author contributes little to a general theory of this profound issue. In sum, I would say that this book's performative narrative insufficiently forefronts a synesthetic orientatio of the Aztec cosmovision.

interesting Aztec ritual and cosmic geometry
By Christopher D. Hampson
In City of Sacrifice, David Carrasco explains his picture of Aztec cosmology by describing various Aztec rituals and traditions, drawing on his archaeological experience as well as his interpretation of Aztec art and myth. We may begin and end the book uncomfortable with human sacrifice, but Carrasco's understanding of the worldview behind it puts it in some perspective.

I find this work to be valuable first as a description of Aztec practices. Carrasco's accounts of the major Aztec festivals are interesting and enjoyable (the chapter titles include "Give Me Some Skin" and "Cosmic Jaws") although often macabre. I appreciate that Carrasco has worked on the archaeological dig in Ciudad de México and understands firsthand the primary sources-- artifacts, remains, sculptures, paintings-- that form our basis of understanding for Aztec culture. Second, I enjoy Carrasco's picture of Aztec cosmology, a cosmology that has lines (both vertical and horizontal) as well as a center, a periphery, and a lynchpin between the worlds. This is clearly the influence of Mircea Eliade, one of my favorite theorists of religion. Thinking of religion in terms of cosmic geometry is a really interesting exercise, and enables us to envision how others have ordered the world around them. You will want to pick up "The Sacred and the Profane" by Eliada as a companion read to Carrasco.

Fascinating, if grim, side of human religiousity
By no longer a customer
Fascinating study of Aztec religion in the context of the communal life of the City and the promotion of a common cosmology and morality. Unlike many authors of Aztec religion, Carrasco doesn't shy away from presenting the most grim aspects of Aztec human sacrifice, (from the drawing of thorns through the tongue to the heart wrenching sacrifice of children to the phantasmagoric ripping of hearts from chest cavities). In presenting these grim aspects, Carrasco asks the question "why" and offers one possible explanation in the context of the notion of communal city life and the preservation of a common cosmology and morality via ritual and myth, even if violent. Carrasco admits, refreshingly, that this is not the only explanation, and, in fact, we may never fully understand what would prompt any civilization to such wholesale spiritual slaughter, but Carrasco is one of very few scholars in religious studies willing to critically and objectively deal with the notion of violence in religion. One caveat: this is not a casual read and familiarity with Religious Studies and the work of Burkert and Eliade is assumed. At times the text can be hard going and the completion of the book has the abruptness of falling off a cliff. But for readers interested in the study of religion and how it shapes us, this book is an important addition to your bookshelf.

Beyond Shame: Reclaiming the Abandoned History of Radical Gay Sexuality, by Patrick Moore

With bathhouses, "cruising" in urban areas, and private clubs built specifically for anonymous erotic encounters, the radical sexuality of gay American men in the 1970s is often seen as a shameful period of excess that led to the AIDS crisis.

In Beyond Same, activist Patrick Moore claims that when the gay community divorced itself from this allegedly tainted legacy, the result was an intergenerational disconnect between younger and older gay men. The original participants in the 1970s' sexual culture were unable to impart a sense of pride and identity to younger generations. Indeed, one reason for the current rise in HIV, Moore argues, is precisely due to this destructive disconnect.

Moore encourages gay men to reclaim the entirety of their heritage-including AIDS-so that the gay community's prevailing sense of shame and isolation will change. Lifting the veil of AIDS, Moore recasts the gay male sexual culture of the 1970s as both groundbreaking and creative, provocatively comparing extreme sex to art. In the process, he presents a powerful yet nuanced snapshot of a maligned, forgotten era, with its heady mix of sexual liberation, artistic celebrations of homosexuality, and political anger fueled by the prevalent homophobia.

Moore's critical work attempts to rescue gay America's past, present, and future from a disturbing spiral of destruction and AIDS-related shame.

A talented novelist who for many years was director of the Estate Project for Artists with AIDS, Moore (This Every Night) offers a provocative defense of gay male sex culture in the 1970s as well as a jeremiad on the AIDS holocaust of the 1980s. The most exciting writing here details New York's provisional "theaters of pleasure" (sex clubs like The Mineshaft, dance clubs such as The Saint) with novelistic atmosphere and a canny ear for interview and synthesis, while Moore's portraits of artists lost to AIDS are also first-rate. Writers Cookie Mueller and Assotto Saint emerge as more interesting than their work, while the late David Wojnarowicz's memoir in particular is vaunted. Art world hackles will rise at Moore's unsympathetic account of gallerist Andrea Rosen's administration of the Felix Gonzalez-Torres estate, as Moore raises the specter of dealers and collectors profiting from the work of the dead and "de-gaying" it in the process. He also recreates the heady, vivid ACT UP era of street activism, recalling how the pink-and-black "Silence = Death" poster ignited the conscience of a generation. Some of Moore's arguments feel more like assertions, in particular his statement that the wild sex pioneered by gay men during the '70s was itself a form of art, although his argument is partly salvaged by a deft reading of Fred Halsted's threatening, aimless porn, and by his witty follow-up that, during the '80s East Village art boom, "art became sex." As a detailed examination of the ways in which rage gives depth to art, Moore's book has no peer in recent memory.

Review
Patrick Moore presents us with a concept so radical, so transgressive that it will startle most readers . . . We still have much further to go to comprehend that sexual activity and pleasure can be not just an inspiration, but the source of creativity. - from the Foreword by Michael Bronski, author of Culture Clash: The Making of Gay Sensibility

"Patrick Moore boldly argues that the promiscuous gay men of the 1970s were actually artists and that AIDS derailed an esthetic community and sexual adventure. This quietly personal book reclaims the past for young gay men and makes it usable."--Edmund White, author of A Boy's Own Story

"A personal, tender, honest book about a past that can never be regained, but must not be forgotten." --Sarah Schulman, author of After Delores

"Patrick Moore reminds us of the extravagant creativity of gay self-fashioning in the 1970s, in the hope that such historical awareness can help us bring about an extravagant, creative gay future."--Carolyn Dinshaw, director of the Center for Gender & Sexuality, New York University

"Moore's exceptional study considers those men who fashioned an underground gay life that still resonates today."--Felice Picano, author of Like People in History and a founding member of the Violet Quill Club

About the Author
Patrick Moore has worked extensively on gay issues as both an activist and a writer. The author of two novels, This Every Night and Iowa, he was the founding director of the Estate Project for Artists with AIDS in New York City. Moore currently lives in Los Angeles, California, and is developing projects for film and television.

a very honest well researched book
By Kotaro
Moore does an excellent job of highlighting how one-sided much of the discussion has been regarding 70's gay urban culture and while one may not agree with all of his statements, it is a thoroughly interesting and informative piece with great depth and fine writing. Gay artists and performers of the 70's and onward are discussed at great length, which will be of interest to many.

A compelling account of the gay sexual revolultion
By A Customer
This is an extraordinary book. As a gay man in my 30s, I've never really connected with the gay sex world in the 70s although I've always been interested in it. The books that I've read about the 70s have been dry and academic but Moore's book brings the era to life. I was riveted both by the profiles of some of the characters of the time and by the idea that sex can be a kind of art. It should be required reading for all gay men.

Discovering Kwan Yin, Buddhist Goddess of Compassion, by Sandy Boucher

In this lovely illustrated volume, the author recounts stories of the goddes Kwan Yin, a bodhisattva (one who delays her own full enlightenment to work for the liberation of all beings), and explains Kwan Yin's role in Buddhism. At the same time, Boucher provides meditations, chants, and prayers devised by the Buddhist devotees of Asian and Western heritage so that all readers can participate in and even create their own rituals.

Amazon.com Review
On one end of the spectrum of Western Buddhism, we have the likes of Stephen Batchelor and his Buddhism Without Beliefs. On the other end, some people choose to preserve the gods of the East. Sandy Boucher, author of Opening the Lotus and Turning the Wheel, turns her attention to the phenomenon of Kwan Yin (also known as: Guanyin, Kannon, Kwan Um, Chenrezig, Avalokitesvara), bodhisattva of compassion. Kwan Yin as comforter, healer, and female exemplar has been adopted as a personal deity by a growing number of Western women, whether Buddhists or not. In Discovering Kwan Yin, Boucher meets up with many of them, evoking stories of profound encounters, life-saving rescues, and long-term guidance. The wide-open spiritualism of Boucher's search leads her to a diversity of images, places, people, and experiences: Asian-American immigrants, a Chinese island, an extravagant tattoo, a Fulbright poet, a pagan goddess mass. For those seeking a divine presence in their lives, and a female one at that, Discovering Kwan Yin is a powerful initiation into a centuries-old tradition of soulful devotion. --Brian Bruya

From Library Journal
Boucher, author of other noted feminist and Buddhist titles (e.g., Opening the Lotus, LJ 5/15/97) offers what she describes as the first book on Kwan Yin written by a woman. It is perhaps inevitable, in the surge of interest in woman- and goddess-centered spirituality, that books on the East's most familiar goddess should appear, and Boucher's work is a good beginning. Warm personal recollections and shared experiences shape this collection of life stories, songs, and insights, but Buddhist readers should be aware that Boucher's outlook reflects a largely American and even Californian version of Buddhism. For larger collections and those strong in feminist studies.

The key word is "discovering"
By David Makinster
If Sandy Boucher had presented this book as an academic text, a philosophical treatise, or a spiritual training guide, I would have rated this book much lower. But the key word is "discovering." As a communications professional and educator, as well as a Buddhist, I think you must evaluate a book in terms of it's intended audience and purpose.
When institutions lose sight of universal compassion as a living principle, when tradition is monopolozed by an aristocracy of scholars and clerics indifferent to the suffering of everyday people, then people rediscover Kwan Yin - "she who hears the crying of the world." Sandy Boucher has gathered the stories of several women who have "discovered" Kwan Yin in their own lives, in their own ways, for their own reasons.
Sandy Boucher steps back and does not impose an aggressive point-of-view of her own. She is non-judgemental, not because she is a flake, but because her main purpose is to tell the stories of a few women, and let those stories speak for themselves. The "discovery" of Kwan Yin is the discovery of how, in a multitude of ways, compassion becomes a living reality in the lives of these women, based on THEIR experience of Kwan Yin. A more scholarly, critical, or polemical approach would have weakened -- not strengthened -- this book.
Try reading it with a beginner's mind.

Finally, a beautiful book about the beautiful Kwan Yin.
By A Customer
I waited for months for this book to be printed. It was worth the wait. It is full of the tenderness and strength of Kwan Yin herself. The author's clear and sensitive prose and the simple format of the book make it a true gift. It has the history of Kwan Yin, legends, songs chants, resources...so much for such a little book. There is not a single wasted word. I especially enjoyed the various interviews with different women around the country who love Kwan Yin. I am a man, and although this book is subtitled, "A Woman's book of ruminations, meditations, prayers, and chants," I didn't for a minute feel left out as I read the book. It's a must have for anyone interested in Kwan Yin. By far the best book in English on Kwan Yin. Very sensitively done.

"Introducing the universal goddess of compassion"
By Jessica Levine
In her book, Sandy Boucher celebrates the goddess Kwan Yin, who is known throughout Asia as the Goddess of Compassion. Boucher begins by giving a short and accessible history of this goddess and then tells stories about women from both Eastern and Western cultures who have found support in her. She includes both classic rituals used to honor Kwan Yin and contemporary songs and poems written in her honor. This book will inspire a broad range of spiritual seekers including Buddhists, mystics, people struggling with illness and adversity, and women looking for positive role models. Kwan Yin is, in Boucher's book, an entity one can dialogue with and get comfort from. This is a beautifully written and uplifting book.

Charming Intro to Chess Pre-Teens
By Christopher J. Rolls
I bought this not realizing that it was geared to youths, but found it delightful nonetheless. The book is a very nice compilation of basic chess strategy and tactics, coupled with well chosen illustrative games, many played by Grandmasters during their youth. This in itself brings a wonderful simplification to the historical games. Moreover, it is interlaced with a number of interesting tidbits on chess history, notable players in the past few hundred years, and short, but entertaining, chess lore. I will certainly keep this and have my daughter read it when she is old enough.

Moving Every Child Ahead: From NCLB Hype to Meaningful Educational Opportunity, by Michael A. Rebell, Jessica R. Wolff

Here, for the first time, is the essential volume on NCLB. In Moving Every Child Ahead, Michael Rebell, education law scholar and foremost authority on the educational rights of children, who led the Campaign for Fiscal Equity (CFE) in its constitutional challenge to New York's education finance system, and his colleague Jessica Wolff examine the federal No Child Left Behind Act through the lens of educational equity. In compelling and readable fashion, they make specific recommendations for revisions to the law. Acting as a counterbalance to the current unworkable law, this book proposes a more realistic way to achieve NCLB's inspiring vision by ensuring the right to meaningful educational opportunity for all students.

A must-read during the debate about the reauthorization of NCLB, this timely volume:
* Advances a practical and visionary benchmark for measuring and ensuring the quality of public education.
* Recommends ways that NCLB might be reauthorized with more meaningful provisions to serve students in poverty, in and out of schools.
* Tackles specific provisions in NCLB head-on, such as the popular, but impossible, goal of 100% student proficiency by 2014
* Provides a credible alternative vision to ensure that all children will learn in accordance with challenging academic standards.

Endorsements:

At last, a book on No Child Left Behind that makes sense to school practitioners. All who care about the future of our public schools should read this book as soon as possible!

Michael Rebell and Jessica Wolff present precisely the kind of nuanced, fine-grained exploration of NCLB and its impact that the country so desperately needs.

Wendell Phillips: Liberty's Hero, by James Brewer Stewart

Throughout the Civil War era, no other white American spoke more powerfully against slavery and for the ideals of racial democracy than did Wendell Phillips. Nationally famous as "abolition's golden trumpet," Phillips became the North's most widely hailed public lecturer, even though he espoused ideas most regarded as deeply threatening -- the abolition of slavery, equality among races and classes, and women's rights. James Brewer Stewart's study resolves this seeming paradox by showing how Phillips came to possess such extraordinary rhetorical gifts, how he used them to shape the politics of his times, and how he rooted them in his upbringing, marriage, and personal relationships.

From Library Journal
Stewart's biography demonstrates that Phillips played a greater role in shaping the conflict over slavery than was previously understood. He traces the reformer's growth from Beacon Hill aristocrat to racial egalitarian and champion of free labor and women's rights, stressing the strong influence of Ann Phillips on her husband's career. Stewart deftly reconstructs exactly how Phillips, a matchless public speaker, got his effects and won his following. Phillips's painful differences with his beloved Garrison, his ambivalence over violence, his antipolitical style of politics, his relentless pressure on Lincoln, and his fight for the ballot for all are among the many themes explored in depth. Phillips emerges as one of the rare figures in American politics who earn the reader's deep respect. Milton Meltzer, New York

From Library Journal
Excerpted from a lengthy diary written between 1844 and 1904, this fascinating volume reveals the private life, daily routine, and social rituals of an upper-class Boston woman. A wealthy matron, Cabot numbered prosperous Beacon Hill and Brookline families among her friends. Now this diary, which served as her confidante, is an important resource for social historians. The editor, a professor at the University of Hull, England, provides an excellent general introduction and explanatory notes to the text. The journal, containing only rare expressions of political opinion, is valuable for its glimpses into courtship patterns, rules of etiquette, and the medical perils of 19th-century life. Recommended for specialists and general readers.

From Kirkus Reviews
The thoughtful diary of an upper-crust Bostonian woman, written between the years 1844 and 1904. When the diary opens, Elizabeth Mason is an enthusiastic nine- year-old about to embark on a trip to New York. When it closes, she is a seasoned grandmother who has married, raised five children, lost a brother to war, and witnessed the death of her husband. Mason's writings, which editor Taylor has divided into seven chronological sections, have a strong element of aristocratic reserve yet still manage to portray a warm and complex woman. She is only tangentially interested in public affairs (she barely mentions the Civil War, for example); what fascinates her is the private sphere. By far the most revealing section of her diary occurs between 1854 and 1857, when she is being courted by numerous suitors. Their attentions make her reflect deeply on women's role in society (``But is it not possible,'' she asks, ``that women's true place is yet to be perceived...?'') and the capriciousness of love (``What can he know of me, excepting that I have pretty manners and brown hair and can smile---alas, alas is this the way one is to stumble on one's lot?''). Most of the other sections are substantially more descriptive than reflective, but throughout is a pervasive sense of the precariousness of 19th-century life. Many of Mason's friends die unexpectedly of disease, accident (one young friend burns to death when her dress catches fire), or childbirth. Taylor illuminates Mason's sometimes disappointingly brief entries with informative footnotes, a background introduction, and 16 photos (not seen). A revealing glimpse or 19th-century Bostonian society, written by an intelligent and perceptive woman who's not afraid to question either herself or her world. -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. The Force of Spirit, by Scott Russell Sanders

Scott Russell Sanders reveals how the pressure of the sacred breaks through the surfaces of ordinary life-a life devoted to grown-up children and aging parents, the craft of writing, and the natural world. Whether writing to his daughter and his son as each prepares to get married, or describing an encounter with a red-tailed hawk in whose form he glimpses his dead father, or praising the disciplines of writing and carpentry and teaching, Sanders registers, in finely tuned prose, the force of spirit.

Review
Sanders's voice is honest and witty and rich with the joy of storytelling; he confronts gently, but with determination, many of the dilemmas of our time and the enigmatic nature of our worlds. The Force of Spirit urges the reader to sit back, to enjoy the pleasure of reading, then to consider and reconsider carefully. -Pattiann Rogers, author of Eating Bread and Honey

"In the tradition of Montaigne, Thoreau, Wendell Berry, and Annie Dillard, Sanders has established himself as one of the few masters of the personal essay." -Tom Montgomery-Fate, The Boston Globe

"Sanders is the writer I turn to when I feel the need to slow down, pay attention, ponder the blessings of life and acknowledge them with due respect, apprehension, joy. His newest gathering of essays . . . only enhances my admiration for his values, vision, and eloquence." -Jim Mustick, A Common Reader

"One of America's finest essayists. Sanders writes with a rare grace and sensitivity, befriending the reader by being so human himself." —Phillip Lopate

Essays on Life's Center
By Cal Emery
"Sanders is the writer I turn to when I feel the need to slow down, pay attention, ponder the blessings of life..." I've lifted that from the dust jacket because I can't say it any better.

The Force of Spirit is a collection of essays on the existence of, and belief in, a spiritual center to life. Through personal anecdotes and musings Sanders approaches the topic from a dozen directions, gradually making a case for his own belief but never dictating yours.

I'm far from a fan of precious memoirs (see my review of Marley and Me), and I don't share Sanders' belief in any sort of true universal spirit. But there are iconic experiences, and maybe primordial instincts, that can guide us away from life's frantic effemera toward a sense of calm, perhaps even centeredness, which seems to be its own reward. Sanders gently walks a path around and through some of the places and experiences in his life that have brought him a kind of peace and perhaps understanding, and I find that his observations quietly encourage me to value similar essentials in my own life.

You don't have to believe in God to understand that a solitary meander beside a woodland stream can do you a world of good. This book is a subtle and eloquent reminder "to slow down, pay attention, ponder the blessings of life."

A Common Thread
By Cynthia
Scott Russell Sanders speaks to and through all of us with his poignant collection of universal experiences. His voice contains an authentic and quiet dignity that is increasingly difficult to hear in the cacophony of modern life.
