could be helpfull
By A Customer
This book is a helpfull overview of food intolerances, with some helpfull information on how to eat/ change ones environment/ change ones life to minimize symptoms (such as rashes, headaches, etc.)
As the mother of a young child with excema, I found the tone of the book intollerable. It reccommends that ALL pregnant and nursing mothers avoid ALL common allergens. Common allergens according to Dick Thom: wheat, dairy, eggs, soy, pork, tomatoes, potatoes, all citrus, chocolate... maybe some others that I am forgetting. To cavalierly suggest this to persons who are not currently having serious allergy problems seems irresponsible. I found it telling that there was a long discussion of what formula to use if you could not produce enough milk when breastfeeding... this is a very uncommon problem, unless you are quite undernourished or overstressed. Trying to following his dietary restrictions would lead to both.

Amazon.com Review
Harvard professor Cornel West issues "a kind of wake-up call to each of us,"asserting that "Black America sits on the brink of collective disaster." In this collection of eight question-and-answer interviews, West seeks ideas for inspiring and reinvigorating black America. Actor-singer Harry Belafonte talks about his influences; politician Bill Bradley urges each of us to confront race in our daily lives; poet Maya Angelou makes the point that "one other word for hope is love"; and trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis discusses both music and the need to rebuild black communities. The book is a project of the Obsidian Society, a nonprofit corporation dedicated to improving conditions for black Americans. Profits from the book will benefit the organization.

From Library Journal
How is hope created and maintained? In his Race Matters (LJ 3/15/93), West said that there was an "eclipse of hope and the collapse of meaning in much of black America." With this book he returns to the topic of hope and meaning in the African American community by conducting a series of interviews with leading politicians, writers, musicians, journalists, and scholars, including Bill Bradley, Charlayne Hunter-Gault, Wynton Marsalis, and Maya Angelou. Each talks of how hope can be created and nurtured through the strength of the traditional black church, the love of close families, and the experience of shared cultural history and traditions. The interviews?thoughtful, intimate, and intriguing?make the reader believe that hope in black America can indeed be restored. Recommended for all libraries.?Nora Harris, Marin Cty. From Kirkus Reviews
West was justly praised for his provocative study Race Matters (1993), an exploration of the nature of racial discourse in contemporary America. Those looking for the same kind of probing and original explorations of race in these transcripts of West's conversations about race with, among others, Maya Angelou, Harry Belafonte, and Charlayne Hunter-Gault, will probably be disappointed. West notes in his introduction that ``a specter of despair haunts late twentieth-century America . . . Wealth, inequality and class polarization are escalating.'' To counter this, he argues, the times require those willing to ``speak our fallible truths, expose the vicious lies, and bear our imperfect witness.'' The problem here is that, as is usually the case with conversations, the quality of testimony and thought varies greatly. Those familiar with, for instance, Maya Angelou's ideas will find little new here. There are moving moments, such as Belafonte's call for viewing struggle not as ``some harmful, negative thing'' but as an action of great dignity, power, and beauty, but too often the things said are unsurprising and without much impact. A mixed bag, best for West's typically salty and precise comments throughout. (Author tour) -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Like a good conversation....
By A Customer
This work was like a good conversation. A bit pithy and cliched at times, it raises many important issues within the black American diaspora yet does not present any specific solutions. The reader definitely gains the sense that he or she is actually engaged in conversation with Dr. West and the other individual; however, just when the reader is about to put his two cents in, the chapter ends. The conversations with Pat Williams was the most enlightening. I guess, one could perceive the levity of the this work as optimism, a quality that earns the four stars. Definitely, a nightstand piece that preps you for a solution-oriented mind.

Interesting Look Into The Future of Black America
By Alex Thanos
In this book sociologist, Cornel West, decided to interview prominent figures in America in order to get their feelings on the future of black America. In this book West interviews Maya Angleou, Harry Belafonte, and Bill Bradley just to name a few. West deals with all aspects of black culture. He deals with the church, music, and literature all key in understanding black thought and history. Each person included the book has a unique perspective on what direction blacks are heading for in the future. This book's main thought is that even though black poverty is an American problem, blacks have risen up from hard times in the past and will continue to be a major part of this country.

The two Buzzards high out on a limb think that Hope is not a Program?
By Herbert L Calhoun
If our history has taught us anything, it is that democracy itself is nothing if not a rich program for action, not just for hope - whether that hope is full, empty, or audacious. Democracy also is not for the faint-hearted or the perpetual wishful thinker. In short, democracy is not for those scared to act. And the forces of racial evil, inequality and injustice, our constant adversary, as the contributors to this volume make so clear, are not in the business of "harvesting hope" as their only program to roll back any gains that we make towards equal justice. To go along with hope, our adversaries, also always have as their companion an "action program" to defeat equality and justice.

Is hope forever going to be our only action program?

The asymmetry, between their "hope plus action," and our "hope without any action," is so glaring that it screams at us from beneath this veil of empty mourning, singing, marching, praying and wishful thinking, to do something, anything! And as quiet as it is kept, one of the most important allies of our racist adversaries' action program is us, who are constantly encouraged by our adversaries to do nothing but mourn, sing, pray, march and hope? And then when we finish mourning, singing, praying, marching and hoping, they want us to do it again. And we do.

This cultural leitmotif for non-action has been repeated so often that now every time I see a fat black woman singing a gospel like Mahalia Jackson, I get mad; I want to puke, because I know that that is the calling card for non-action, the ultimate black symbol of retreat, a cue to "tuck your tail and run back into the Church for another dose of hope." Maybe that is why "we" are constantly retreating and "they" are constantly on the attack -- and in the process it is why they are still racking up victory after victory?

Mr. Belafonte, who leads off these interviews, is one of my heroes, and whenever he speaks, the world must learn to listen. His wisdom and experience about this country runs so deep and are so profound that they never miss the mark. For instance, it is true as he says that we have more blacks and minorities with titles, but that don't give a damn about the black condition than we ever had before. I can list a few of them: Condoleeza Rice, Colin Powell, Bill Cosby, John Yoo, Linda Chavez, Clarence Thomas, Ed Perkins, Herman Cain, and Barack Obama -- as the ones that immediately come to mind.

These people did not fight in the trenches of the Civil Rights movement, or for justice and equality, they just waited around like buzzards out on a limb, to help pick up the pieces, and pick up the pieces they did. They are the living legacy, that provide the current weak and brittle foundation that we now call our "multicultural nation?" But I agree with Dr. King" with their moral cowardliness, we have done little more than "integrate into a burning house." Amid all the destruction and confusion, and moral cowardliness, black culture has been neutered; it has lost its cultural base; young people are lost, and as a result have become the "entertainment culture;" and the churches have become "cash-and-carry" megadollar enterprises. Mr. Belafonte is right again: we have not just lost our culture and our vision, but we have also lost our moral authority and even our humanity!

Dr. West is another of my heroes. He is that rare mixture of Existentialism and Christianity, a so-called self-described, Chekhovian Christian. Sometimes I think he should become more in touch with the existentialist side of his being and less with his Christian side (as he has done here). For he knows as well as any one, that hope is not a program. But rather than say that to us straight up, he keeps mimicking Obama and pushing this empty framework of hope off on us? Yet, his own life is not one fashioned out of hope; it is filled with "committed action!" Why then is he still selling us these "hope Wolf tickets," when what we really need is committed action?

Is committed action not what Democracy was made for, and demands of us? Indeed, if hope were a program, then black people would be "riding high" already, because despite all the despair in our communities described in this book there are no more hopeful people on earth than American black people. We do not need to incessantly be encouraged to be hopeful, it is a natural part of our DNA, how else could we have survived on this racist continent for 400 years without it? What we lack is "follow through" with a committed action program.

Why then are so many people still singing "Obama's hope song" and advocating more and more hope instead of what we really need which is more action? Plus, we now have in the White House today, the self-declared world champion of all hope: our first mulatto President, Mr. Barack Obama. We have seen where his audacious brand of hope has led us: directly back to the future, back to yet another cycle of mourning, singing, praying, marching and hoping. He only shows up in Irish bars. I am still "hoping" to see him arrive in one of the many black bars in the inner city? Hope on ... huh?

No wonder our racist adversaries have been able to use him like a heavy punching bag. He has been on the ropes in his "rope-a-dope for hope" posture for almost four years. Now that it is election time again, he is back out in the center of the ring bouncing on his toes like Rush Limbaugh. But by now we know the real deal: Obama's hope is like Sarah Palin's "bridge to nowhere:" It does not include an action plan, but a plan to pre-emptively rollover and genuflect in the face of the power of our Republican adversaries. And then Obama's hope is to patiently wait for the next election cycle, where empty-handed he again can come center stage and puff up his chest and crow progressive themes like a Banny rooster. He does this all the while sending robo-calls seeking more campaign donations with false messages about how liberal and progressive he is, and about how the Republican boogey man will get us unless we support him again? In this regard, he and Mitt Romney are soul mates: moral chameleons and pygmy politicians of opposite colors.

Remember the old joke about the two buzzards sitting high out on a limb waiting for something to die. Impatient, one buzzard says to the other: "To hell with waiting, I am going to go down there and kill something." That my friend, is the difference between a black Christian and a black existentialist, between Barack Obama and Jeremiah Wright, between Harry Belafonte and Condoleezza Rice. One will sit out on a limb forever waiting for his rewards in the next dimension. This life to him is only a rehearsal for the next world, the "real life." Obama's hope program" is enough for this life.

The others, like Mr. Belafonte and Dr. West, will take their lives into their own hands and try to make something of them. Again, Mr. Belafonte is right: groups must take responsibility for themselves. Politicians, no matter their skin color, will sell us all down the drain.

There is a little Barack Obama and a little Jeremiah Wright in each of us. We have waited, sung, mourned, marched and prayed "too long" and our cause is "too just" to wait any longer. It is time to stop turning the other cheek, and start turning all this hope into an action program. That is what Mr. Belafonte did his entire life. He flew down to Selma, Alabama with a hundred thousand dollars of his own money in a briefcase to help Dr. King survive during one of King's most trying times. He was not high out on an isolated limb waiting for something to happen. He was more an existentialist than a Christian, actually on his way to save a Christian. Unlike Mr. Obama, Mr. Belafonte audaciously put his hope into an action plan and executed it to perfection.

As a survivor of the Civil Rights era, there are some ugly truths that must be told but were not told in this very uplifting book. We blacks must eventually come to grips with them all. One is that during the heady era of the Civil Rights Movement, when John Lewis was getting his head split open in Selma, 98% of blacks did less than nothing. I say less than nothing only to emphasize that many of those who were active, were in fact actively helping the other side. For instance, we now know that on that balcony in Memphis at the Lorraine Motel, where Dr. King died, at least one of his own entourage (the one without a tie on -- that was the FBI's signal used to identify him) was a paid black FBI informer, who helped set up Dr. King's murder? I remember well how Ms. Early, a black Registrar at AM&N college, turned all the names of those of us who sat-in at the lunch counters in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, to the local white police?

Are we to continue to ignore these aspects of our existence? As well, unless we forget, at least in my hometown, the vanguard of the Civil Rights movement was initially made up of young white college students on vacation from the North, many of them Jewish. Black middle-class parents, almost to a man and woman, were encouraging us not to get involved, as it might put their jobs in jeopardy? The sad truth is that there was nearly as much angst in the black community about how the Civil Rights movement might affect the racist status quo as there was in the racist white communities? What these parents were "hoping for" was that we either succeeded quickly, or else got out of the movement in time to save their jobs? That is the kind of strategic but morally bankrupt hope that many black people still engage in. I did not make this up, this actually happened. And it is sad to say that this is as much a part of the Civil Rights legacy as are the big scars on John Lewis' scalp.

We cannot assert, insinuate or hope our way into the hearts of the racists who oppose our every move. While we diddle with hope, they are in the active rollback mode, and are succeeding -- using every lever of power and action to their advantage that there is. Right before our eyes, the whole Republican Party has morphed into a "legitimized racist anti-black Party" literally a "white Citizens Council, writ large," all out in the open and all under the convenient rubric of "being conservative." What they have, my friend is an "action program:" not hope.

Our only response to this national challenge has been to either join them, or put our faith in another political Messiah peddling hope? Barack Obama has made it clear in everyway he knows how, that he does not want to be our Messiah, yet we cling to him anyway? Gratuitously and mockingly he has called us "professional liberals," and shakes his fingers in the faces of all black men telling us we are all irresponsible, and telling us to get off the couches and out of our house shoes, and too stop whining? These gratuitous insults incidentally came from the same politician that Rev Wright had already warned us about: as being just another "Chicago politician." And so far, Rev Wright has been right. (no pun intended). This is the man that we supported with 95% of our votes in the last election? Now, boy that support was some kind of hope?

I understand that Dr. West's Obsidian Society has an action component to it, and that some blacks do "get it," but I am too old a buzzard to keep on sitting out here on this limb alone waiting for the racist to die. It is clear now to me that if I don't act, it is I who will die before they will. Five stars.

Gather at the Table: The Healing Journey of a Daughter of Slavery and a Son of the Slave Trade, by Thomas Norman DeWolf, Sharon Morgan

Two people—a black woman and a white man—confront the legacy of slavery and racism head-on

“We embarked on this journey because we believe America must overcome the racial barriers that divide us, the barriers that drive us to strike out at one another out of ignorance and fear. To do nothing is unacceptable.”

Sharon Leslie Morgan, a black woman from Chicago’s South Side avoids white people; they scare her. Despite her trepidation, Morgan, a descendent of slaves on both sides of her family, began a journey toward racial reconciliation with Thomas Norman DeWolf, a white man from rural Oregon who descends from the largest slave-trading dynasty in US history. Over a three-year period, the pair traveled thousands of miles, both overseas and through twenty-seven states, visiting ancestral towns, courthouses, cemeteries, plantations, antebellum mansions, and historic sites. They spent time with one another’s families and friends and engaged in deep conversations about how the lingering trauma of slavery shaped their lives.

Gather at the Table is the chronicle of DeWolf and Morgan’s journey. Arduous and at times uncomfortable, it lays bare the unhealed wounds of slavery. As DeWolf and Morgan demonstrate, before we can overcome racism we must first acknowledge and understand the damage inherited from the past—which invariably involves confronting painful truths. The result is a revelatory testament to the possibilities that open up when people commit to truth, justice, and reconciliation. DeWolf and Morgan offer readers an inspiring vision and a powerful model for healing individuals and communities.

From Booklist
DeWolf and Morgan met through their interest in a group aimed at racial reconciliation but didn’t automatically take to each other. Eventually, DeWolf, a descendent of slave traders and owners (Inheriting the Trade, 2009), saw in opinionated Morgan the ideal companion to help him delve into the trauma of America’s racial history and prospects for recovery. Morgan, descended from enslaved Africans, founded the website Our Black Ancestry. For four weeks, the two traveled through 21 states, Washington, D.C., and the Caribbean, tracing their individual heritages and the common experience of race in America. They visited one another’s families and childhood homes and traced the path of race history through Southern plantations and civil rights movement sites, all while exploring how their friendship evolved “within the context of racial reconciliation.” In their search to become conscious of learned attitudes about race and to work to change them, Morgan struggles with racial anger and deep distrust of whites, while DeWolf confronts long unexamined white privilege, and both share the pain, joy, and exhaustion of a demanding and healing journey. --Vanessa Bush

Review
“Gather at the Table is an honest exploration into the deep social wounds left by racism, violence, and injustice, as the authors work through their own prejudices in search of reconciliation--and ultimately find friendship.”
—Leymah Gbowee, 2011 Nobel Peace Laureate

“I could not put this book down. Gather at the Table is an extraordinary story of an honest, meaningful conversation across the racial divide. At times it hurts to read. And well it should. Centuries of injustice and trauma that face us every day in this country have no place for half-truths. Sharon and Tom took the harder road—searching for healing, they literally walked together into painful histories and found authentic friendship.”
—John Paul Lederach, PhD, author of The Moral Imagination: The Art and Soul of Building Peace

“A great introduction to a shared past that ought to be better known.”
—Kirkus Reviews

“What a courageous journey—communicated in an engaging, readable style with candor, humor, and deep feeling. This book shed light on the thoughts, questions, and feelings I have about race, society, culture, and historical, generational, and structurally induced trauma—and the human ability to transcend. In reading it, I realized there are questions I’m still afraid to ask about race, things I’m afraid to say, and yet I realized anew the power of acknowledgment, mercy, justice, and conflict transformation. I’m grateful to DeWolf and Morgan for not just taking the journey but for sharing their story with us.”
—Carolyn Yoder, founding director of STAR: Strategies for Trauma Awareness & Resilience

“Sharon and Tom take us on a heart-opening journey of awakening. As a nation, we owe them a deep bow of gratitude as they help us navigate the deep divides of race and otherness.”
—Belvie Rooks, cofounder, Growing a Global Heart

A Very Deep and Rewarding Book
By monicae
The first thing about this book that pops into my head is wow; this should be more widely read. This is basically a journalling of thoughts and feelings of two people searching for ways to address racism in the US with a sprinkling of little known history mixed in to help us all learn where we as a country have been. It ends up being much more affecting than I expected. Full disclosure, my point of view is that of a middle aged, middle class, African-American woman. I was deeply moved by Sharon and Tom. At the beginning of the book Sharon came off to me as bitter, paranoid and a little extreme in her vision of race relations in the US. At the beginning of the book, Tom struck me as overly sensitive and understanding. His view of the world seemed a little more understanding of the existence racism than I generally see in typical white America. In other words (my interpretation of him): "If we could only just communicate more and listen to each other, we can resolve racism". As these two travel to sites of historical reference worldwide, throughout the book, the reader can tell that these authors did not travel and then write the book. They wrote as they went along. There are subtle differences in the phrasing of passages and in their interpretation of events as they went on. More allowances for seeing other points of view. By the end of the book, the authors had changed. Sharon seems less angry as she sees Tom's understanding grow. She sees proof that there can be understanding if people genuinely seek answers. Tom in the end is less hopeful. His journey allowed him to see that the problems are larger than he had ever imagined. I admit that by the end of the book I had an affinity and affection for Sharon, whom I think feels the wounds of racism very deeply. I also ended up with a great appreciation for Tom who was far more willing than most (in my experience) to look at America and recognize that there are a great many paradigms built into the system that benefit one group over all others based upon race. He also recognizes a huge, societal/cultural denial that those benefits exist, in the effort to preserve them. There are very few resolutions in this book, mostly just observations. As we witness the transformation of these two in the book, we can recognize that basically it's one step at a time or more directly, one person at a time. A very rich and rewarding book that was far deeper than its overall length would imply.

A Healing Journey
By Beverly Jackson
My thoughts:
* At first I was leery of reading this book because of the complexity of the issues/barriers on the effects of the legacy of slavery but was still curious on what was encountered on the journey between DeWolf and Morgan and even more curious on what each of their thoughts would be at the end of the journey.
* I believe that honest communication between both sides of an issue is a necessary element for any complex issues, especially a deeply emotional issue where rooted/biased assumptions exist. And honest communication needs effective listening. And by effective listening I mean not just listening to the other side to formulate your arguments against what the opposition is saying but listening to understand their reasons for their pain/arguments especially for emotional and social perceptions which is based in that person's reality. To acknowledge what the other person is saying/feeling/believing and that it is not most important to prove the other person/side wrong but to acknowledge each side and figure out how to move forward with an effective solution and not hopefully not repeat the errors from prior solutions.
* The value of this book for me is that DeWolf and Morgan did have honest communications and effectively listened to each other. Both were predisposed to this because of involvement in finding a way to overcome racial barriers. Their approach to learning/understanding each other was up close and personal as they traveled together as they met each other families, became involved in the researching of each other's ancestors, visited historical places dealing with slavery and shared past experiences why they have the racial opinions that they have.
* The book is quick paced well-written book and once I started reading I did not want to put down. Though at times the transitions seemed a little choppy this did not distract from my overall appreciation for this book.
* Everyone reading this book will bring their own racial experiences/opinions and some will be more versed in the issues discussed while for others this may be their first foray into a discussion that defines US. I learned some things, I smiled at some comments, shook my head at others, but in the end was glad I read this book. Great beginning book to start the discussion about what is historical fact and what is an opinion believed to be fact.
* This is a great book club read and I would recommend to all Americans and this should be required reading in high schools.
* I am going to buy this book for my daughter and her family.

cultural loss and cultural survival
By Charles E. Nydorf
Africans who were enslaved and taken to America suffered enormous and tragic cultural losses. Amazingly, slaves of very diverse background thrown together under the most adverse conditions managed to somehow reconstruct a great deal of their African culture and transmit it to American-born generations. This courageous cultural achievement has been a major factor in sustaining African-Americans through centuries of tribulations. The author wrote this in 1941 to celebrate the survival of Africanness in African-American culture. It was a pioneering work by someone who was not himself an African-American and subsequent scholars, particularly those from the African-American community, have gone far beyond it. But as you can see from the unfair way that some people disparage such legitimate outgrouths of African traditions such as rap and Ebonics, there is still much that can be learned from this book.

Judah P. Benjamin: Confederate Statesman, by Robert Douthat Meade

A rare Sephardic Jew in the Old South and a favorite of Jefferson Davis, Judah P. Benjamin has been described as "the brains of the Confederacy". He held three successive Confederate cabinet posts -- attorney general, secretary of war, and secretary of state -- and was Davis's closest confidant in the government. But some have questioned Benjamin's loyalty to Davis and the extent of his influence. More than 140 years after Benjamin first appeared on the Confederate scene, historians still debate his place in the history of the Lost Cause. Originally published in 1943 and now available for the first time in paperback, Robert Douthat Meade's Judah P. Benjamin, Confederate Statesman provides an absorbing account of the life of this enigmatic Civil War figure.

Meade chronicles Benjamin's birth in the Virgin Islands; his rise to power as a lawyer and politician in south Louisiana; his election to the U.S. Senate in the 1850s; his outspoken role in the secession controversy; his friendship with Davis; his prominent role in the Confederate government; his daring escape after Appomattox; and his brilliant second law career in England after the war. Still the definitive study of Benjamin after nearly sixty years, Meade's authoritative work is a classic of Civil War biography.

A pearl of great price....
By Robert C. Hufford
Judah Benjamin's story has fascinated me since I was a child. Here was a man who lived by a masterful combination of brains and charm, who overcame great adversity, and, when The Cause was lost, picked himself up and moved on. Benjamin was a biographer's nightmare...he never kept correspondence, burned all his papers before evacuating Richmond [and did the same shortly before he died], and never wrote, or spoke, of the Civil War once it was over. He became the richest lawyer in Louisiana at a young age, lost everything in the war, and, starting over in England in his 50's, became the richest lawyyer there. Who was the first Jew in the U.S. Senate? Who was the first Jew nominated to the Supreme Court? Who was the first American Jew to hold a Cabinet position. Who was the first Jew [and man born outside England] to be a Queen's Counsel in England? Benjamin is the answer to ALL those trivia questions. [David Yulee had served in the Senate earlier, but he had long since converted to Presbyterian; Benjamin turned down President Fillmore's nomination because the Court didn't pay enough] Judah Benjamin held three different jobs in President Davis' Cabinet,[despite an earlier near duel with Davis in the Senate] and was, in many ways, Davis' right hand man, accessory brain, and designated "nice guy", soothing the feathers that Davis ruffled. The story of Benjamin's escape to England at the end of the war is, alone, worth the price of the book. Benjamin's marriage gets plenty of space; in many ways, it was the match made in Hell. Natalie was a piece of work, yet the Benjamins were, on some level, quite devoted to each other, and stayed more or less together for over 50 years.

Judah Benjamin is a problem for some Jews, and northern liberals...here was a Jew, educated at Yale, who owned slaves, and was probably the most articulate defender of slavery. Then, he was one of the central figures in the Confederacy for four years. History does not always fit neatly; try making Thomas Jefferson fit anything. The number of Jews in the Confederacy was around 2000 [see Robert Rosen's "The Jewish Confederates"], and, as for slavery, not only did rich Jews own slaves, so did rich Indians, Mexicans, and free Blacks.

Dr. Robert Meade published this great masterpiece in 1943. It is one of the very finest pieces of biography about anybody, anytime. There are three other Benjamin biographies that I know about, and own. Two of them are even worth reading. But, there is no real comparison. This is up there with Dr. Freeman's "R.E. Lee". High praise, I know, and not made lightly. {If you can find Meade's two volume study of Patrick Henry, get it. Good luck} LSU press deserves a big "THANK YOU" for making this great book available.

ADDENDUM: There is now a fifth volume available...the 1933 "Judah P. Benjamin-Statesman of the Lost Cause" by Rollin Osterweis can be had from Amazon. See my review of it; this volume remains definitive.

The forgotten genius of the Confederate government
By Colmcille
Although this book was written in the 1930's and is not the latest work on Judah Benjamin, it is full of details beginning with Benjamin's Sephardic roots, his rise to prominence as a lawyer, the second Jewish US Senator, and the first Jew to hold offices (Confederate Sec. of War and Sec. of State) on a presidential cabinet. It contains a lot of information from Benjamin's personal correspondence and observations by his contemporaries.

Benjamin's career is fascinating. He becomes internationally known for his law practice in international trade. As a US Senator from Louisiana, he makes a famous speech in the Seante chamber regarding the North trying to dominate the South which receives accolades from the entire US Senate. As Jefferson Davis' "right hand man" he does not do well as Secretary of War, but becomes instrumental as the Confederate Secretary of State. The book also follows his career as an English barrister after he escapes to England after the war.

Perhaps the best feature of this book is that it is written from the perspective of a Southerner and not from anti-Southerner whose education regarding the War for Southern Independence is skewed by political correctness and misinformation. It exposes both the acceptance of Jews(Over 10,000 Jews fought for the Confederacy) and the interestingly small anti-semitic views of the Ante-Bellum South. Sadly, the Jewish community does not revere Benjamin's achievements as a brilliant man due to him being a slave holder and his connection with the Confederacy.

I highly recommend this book for students of Jewish history and the War Between the States.

No Taint of Compromise: Crusaders in Antislavery Politics (Antislavery, Abolition, and the Atlantic World), by Frederick J. Blue

No Taint of Compromise highlights the motives and actions of those who played instrumental if not central roles in antislavery politics -- those who undertook the yeoman's work of organizing parties, holding conventions, editing newspapers, and generally animating and agitating the discussion of issues related to slavery. They were a small but critical number of voices who, beginning in the late 1830s, battled the institution of slavery through political activism. Frederick J. Blue provides an in-depth account of the trials and accomplishments of eleven men and women who, in the face of great odds and powerful opposition, insisted that emancipation and racial equality could only be achieved through the political process: Alvan Stewart, a Liberty party organizer from New York; John Greenleaf Whittier, a Massachusetts poet, journalist, and Liberty activist; Charles Henry Langston, an Ohio African American educator; Owen Lovejoy, a congressman from Illinois; Sherman Booth, a journalist and Liberty organizer in Wisconsin; Jane Grey Swisshelm, a journalist in Pennsylvania and later Minnesota; George W. Julian, a congressman from Indiana; David Wilmot, a congressman from Pennsylvania; Benjamin and Edward Wade, a senator and a congressman, respectively, from Ohio; and Jessie Benton Frémont of Missouri and California, wife of the Republican presidential nominee.Their stories, brought together in this comparative biographical study, enrich our understanding of the political crisis over slavery that led to the Civil War.

I'll Be Short: Essentials for a Decent Working Society, by Robert Reich

'I don't like the basic philosophy that everyone is on their own, out for themselves, a kind of social Darwinism. It's bad for society, especially now. . . . Call me crotchety, but I can't help asking, whatever happened to the social contract?'
The get-rich-quick exuberance of the late nineties may have temporarily blinded us to how dependent we are on one another. Subsequent events serve as reminders that the strength of our economy and the security of our society rest on the bonds that connect us. But what, specifically, are these bonds? What do we owe one another as members of the same society?

With his characteristic humor, humanity, and candor, one of the nation's most distinguished public leaders and thinkers delivers a fresh vision of politics by returning to basic American values: workers should share in the success of their companies; those who work should not have to live in poverty; and everyone should have access to an education that will better their chances in life.

An insider who knows how the economy and government really work, Reich combines realistic solutions with democratic ideals. Businesses do have civic responsibilities, and government must stem a widening income gap that threatens to stratify our nation. And everyone must get involved to help return us to a society that works for everyone.

From Booklist
Brandeis University professor and Clinton labor secretary Reich may be vertically challenged, but he's never been short on ideas. In this brief analysis of what's gone wrong in the U.S. for ordinary citizens, Reich offers a straightforward argument. Our astonishing economic growth after World War II, he maintains, grew out of a social contract: (a) anyone who wants a job should have one; (b) those who work should earn enough to lift themselves and their families out of poverty; and (c) all Americans should have access to an education. This social contract has collapsed over decades of social Darwinism; it needs to be restored. Reich examines the roles of business (it does have civic responsibilities), government (addressing the broadening income--and wealth--gap between rich and poor is high on its list of responsibilities), and education (it's the heart of the problem). A true "family values" agenda, he urges, needs to address the problems of millions of families living from paycheck to paycheck, not thousands of families worried about "the death tax." Denial, escapism, and resignation, Reich maintains, are the main obstacles to rebuilding a decent working society. A punchy, pragmatic, articulate statement of the basic goals of progressive reform. Review
Reich is a big thinker and a great writer. --Nancy Folbre, The Washington Post

"Reich has a talent for mastering economic and social complexities and making them easy for the layperson to grasp." --Daniel Akst, The Wall Street Journal

"Reich writes in ways unusual for an economist; he is self-effacing, witty and more interested in exploring the world's complexities than in uncovering unvarying laws." --Alan Wolfe, The New York Times Book Review

From the Publisher
"I don't like the basic philosophy that everyone is on their own, out for themselves, a kind of social Darwinism. It's bad for society, especially now. . . . Call me crotchety, but I can't help asking, whatever happened to the social contract?"

With his characteristic humor, humanity, and candor, one of the nation's most distinguished advocates for working- and middle-class families delivers a fresh vision of politics by returning to basic American values: anyone who wants a job should have one; those who work should be able to lift themselves and their families out of poverty; and everyone should have access to an education that will better their chances in life.

An insider who knows how the economy and government really work, Reich combines realistic solutions with democratic ideals: businesses do have civic responsibilities; government must stem a widening income gap that threatens to turn our nation into a two-tiered society. Arguing that Democrats and Republicans have strayed dangerously off track, Reich breaks the impasse of current politics and shows us the way to fulfill our nation's promise.

Great book: Robert Reich Rocks!!
By Uncle Elmer
Robert Reich writes in a clear prose that is easily understood and allows the reader to be fully informed without being lectured or preached at.
His points about the evolution of our work force are food for thought and one hopes that the current leadership in Washington is listening to Reich but I doubt it. Mr. Reich is actually a thinker and not a rabid partisan politician which makes him a refreshing breath of fresh air at a time when tv is full of bombast with everyone talking and no one listening. Chris Matthews did you hear me?
Read any book by Robert Reich and you'll learn something. It's like visiting with a favorite teacher or professor that you admire and respect. The hours fly by and you're just in awe of the person and what they have to say. Robert Reich is a true gentleman and a wise man as well.

Robert Reich is Brief, and Important.
By Charlie Ahern
If you've read Robert Reich's recent books and articles, particularly in The American Prospect, you will recognize recurring themes; the insecurity imposed by a globalized economy, the growing income gap, and the importance of investing in education.
One of Reich's ideas that caught my attention was his proposal to extend traditional public schooling from grades K through 12 to K through 14. The 'accountability in education' movement often focuses on preparing students for four-year college degrees, despite the fact that most Americans do not attend or graduate from four-year college programs. In a discussion of the push by many universities to lavish resources on "star" students, Reich suggests that state funding should be shifted to community colleges and vocational programs.
Reich ends his book by addressing the reader with a challenge to personally provide political leadership and involvement despite the political denial, escapism, and resignation that is much too common today in our society.
This is a timely and brief book. You can read it in a day or two. Rather than put it on your bookshelf, give it to a friend and ask your friend to pass it on. (Even better buy a couple of copies and pass them along.) I plan to give a copy to a progressive candidate for the California legislature. Maybe some of Reich's ideas will "bubble-up" to the California legislature in the not-too-distant future.

Short and Sweet and Right-On Target!
By The Aeolian Kid
... Hey, Robert Reich! ... I BOUGHT your book. I READ your book. I LOVE your book! ... You are the voice of decency and sanity. If you run for Governor of Massachusetts, you've got my vote! In fact, you may get even MORE than my vote; you may also get my attention, energy, money, and time. ... What you wrote on pages 101 and 102 hits the nail right on the head: "At the very moment working Americans are toiling longer hours for less money, they want to cut the Earned Income Tax Credit to pay for tax breaks for the wealthy. ... Their strategy is simple: Divide and conquer. Ignore the real problems, get anxious people scared and mad at each other. You could even call it class warfare. And we all know it's worked before." ...
... I also like what you wrote on page 115: "But to become a highly productive society, we have to change our thinking about the role of government. We've become so accustomed to thinking about education, health care, child care, and public transportation as government SPENDING that we don't see the obvious: In the new global economy where financial capital is footloose, these are critical public INVESTMENTS. They mark the only path to a sustained and shared prosperity. Failure to make them - and make them wisely - condemns a society to a steadily declining standard of living. The same is true for regulations protecting worker safety, guarding the environment, and preventing discrimination. These, too, are investments in our future."
... As the former owner of a natural food store, a member of a dozen environmental groups, and a sociology major who focused on conflict theory and social stratification, I KNOW that YOU know what you are talking about - and I agree with all of it. ... Good Luck in your run for Governor! - The Aeolian Kid
