From birth, fraternal twins Judith and Joyce Scott lived as if they were one person in two bodies, understanding instinctively what the other wanted and felt, despite the fact that Judy had Down syndrome, profound deafness, and never learned to speak or sign. But this idyllic childhood of color, texture, and feeling ended abruptly when, at age seven, Judy was taken from their shared bed while Joyce slept, not knowing that the wholeness they had known was being shattered.

For the next three decades, Joyce is left without her other half and must grieve unexpected loss while navigating her relationship with an emotionally distant mother—alone. Even so, her life parallels her twin’s in surprising ways. While in college, Joyce too is sent away, pressured to relinquish the secret daughter she bore in hiding to adoption.

Decades later, Joyce resolves to reunite with her sister and fill their remaining years with joy. After overcoming legal hurdles to become Judy’s legal guardian, she enrolls her in an art center for adults with disabilities in Oakland, California. Judy is hesitant at first, but after two years of uninterested painting and drawing, her untapped creativity suddenly ignites when she is introduced to fiber art, and she begins carefully and intentionally winding yarn and other materials around combinations of found objects. With unflagging intensity, Judy works five days a week for the next eighteen years, producing more than two-hundred astoundingly diverse fiber sculptures. Unconcerned with her growing fame, she remains fully immersed in her artistic vision until her death in 2005. Today, Judith Scott’s work is displayed in museums and galleries around the world, in some of the most prestigious collections of contemporary art.

Entwined: A Modern Fairy tale

I adored this book with its threads of love that joined Judith and Joyce Scott together in their hearts. Entwined tells a story that lingers in the mind long after the last pages have been read. It is a modern cautionary tale with a happy ending that defies imagination. Judith Scott was born a twin with Down syndrome in 1943. Her sister Joyce shared with her many joyous early childhood experiences so that their days were filled with sensate pleasures. It was within a tactile world of mud, sand and water that these two girls formed a lifelong bond that would last across the years

The two sisters had seven years together communicating through their shared non-verbal language of sight, taste and touch. This ended abruptly when at the age of seven Joyce woke up to an empty bed and found herself alone without her sister. Judy had been placed in a forbidding institution where many disabled people were warehoused and left to die at an early age. Joyce Scott writes poignantly about how as a child she became lost in this dark building and peeked into rooms filled with twitching bodies and “bathroom smells without a bathroom.” With this placement, it seemed like Judith Scott’s life in the world was over. Entwined reminds the reader of the people we forget --- the lost ones consigned to suffer in isolated institutions out of sight and mind. Fortunately, the story does not end here. This book speaks to an unimaginable second act that took place thirty five years later. Joyce having survived the death of her father, and her mother’s breakdown reaches a spiritual epiphany at a silent meditation retreat. It is possible that she could take over guardianship of her sister and help her start a new life in California.

The second half of Entwined is a modern fairy tale where the reader meets Judith Scott reborn as a fiber artist at Creative Growth in Oakland. The book recounts the story of this amazing transformation with pathos and humor. We follow Judy’s unexpected journey from indifferent scribbler to dedicated artist who knots brilliantly colored pieces of yarn together to make magnificent sculptures that have been acclaimed throughout the world. Entwined is a true pleasure to read. The author’s deep love for her sister, her twin ---- shines throughout the narrative. This book shows that the two sisters together in their early years are again joined in their artistic sensibility---Joyce weaving a magical tale with words while Judy sculpts her half of their shared story using bright skeins of wool.

I loved this true and beautiful book.

Full disclosure: Joyce Scott is a friend, and I am biased. However, I want to speak as eloquently as I can about her distinctive voice and her extraordinary story. (Yes, literally) I couldn’t put it down. Joyce and her editors have paced the book superbly. The account of her life during the separation from her twin will resonate with anyone who has carried on after a painful loss. The second part tells a story that earns the overused term miraculous: Joyce’s reclaiming of Judith as part of her family and the consequent emergence of Judith as a powerful artist, told straightforwardly but with poetic nuance. It is a wonderful read.

READ THIS BOOK!

It was almost too heartrendingly REAL to read through the beginning chapters of this book- probably because I have a daughter who has Down Syndrome and I could NOT imagine how awful things were for so-called "intellectually challenged" people and their families in those days when the Scott sisters grew up! There is an amazing payback for sticking with this true story of two loving sisters. This story is of great value to everyone: not only art-lovers, sociologists, teachers, parents and booklovers!
I'm hoping this story will be made into a movie...

In A Perfect World

I have not read any of Jean Toomer's work as of yet, only articles, some of his poems and this book about his life. The authors try to keep Toomer's varied accomplishments in perspective. They aim to correct misunderstandings regarding Toomer's position on race and offer his concept of the "universal man"; as one beyond racial boundaries. They also look closely at Toomer's inclination toward mysticism and spirituality. The authors find that Toomer's intense need to be perfect and whole gave focus to the many passions he embraced throughout his life. Jean's self-description in 1922 was as follows:

"Racially, I seem to have (who knows for sure) seven blood mixtures: French, Dutch, Welsh, Negro, German, Jewish, and Indian. One half of my family is definitely colored.... And, I alone, as far as I know, have striven for a spiritual fusion analogous to the fact of racial intermingling."

Later in his life, about 1948, when he is plagued with illness, there remains continual unresolved problems with the black heritage of his racial make-up (his daughter Marjery was not informed of any of her racial heritage). He then says of himself:

"I do not really know myself, who I am, my selfhood, my spiritual identity, or what I am. I have some information about it, but also some misinformation, some misunderstanding, but much illusion. Real motivations? What is my aim, assuming that I have but one aim? I do not really know my wife, my child, my closest friends. I do not know anyone or anything."

I feel Jean Toomer was a man who was troubled by his heritage. He may have been better off to make a choice than to spend his life searching and hoping for a different world where race didn't matter. Although, I also feel that Jean was a head of his time in his thinking when he states that the racial issue in America would be resolved only when white America could accept the fact that its racial 'purity' was a myth...On the other hand, racial purity among blacks was just as much a myth and only encouraged defensiveness and unconscious imitation, like that of an adolescent who defines his revolt against his parents by the very values he is trying to renounce. Race, he said, was a fictional construct, of no use for understanding people."

It's true that whites are not pure, blacks are not pure, and race is a social (fictional) construct, now proven by science, but realistically physical appearance still determines for the most part what race a person is assumed to be, so therefore troubled times still remain in mixed-race cultures where some have not, as of yet, grasped this thinking.

Physically white, and he had every right to identify as such, but racially mixed, he just couldn't make a choice in a society that sees colors not just beings, brought to mind by his poem titled, "People." Toomer did not define himself as an African American but as an American. Toomer's lifelong effort to transcend what he regarded as the narrow divisions of race is fully explored in his works. Toomer's position on race is the principal reason for the absence of racial themes in his writings produced during and after his discovery of Gurdjieff and Quakerism, as well as for his conscious disassociation from Cane: the work that has earned him a central place in the African American literary tradition. A place he didn't really seem to want to be, despite his concept of the "universal man"; as one beyond racial boundaries.

Toomer's philosophy was a wonderful notion, but not realistic. In not telling his daughter about her ancestry, continuously marrying white, and in most of his pursuits, it seems he lived more of a white life despite his refusal to conform to a racial classification.

Jean has been both praised and condemned by black critics and authors. He did what he felt was best on the surface, but not necessarily what was best for his inner being.

This is a good book about an interesting man.

This is a great book focusing on a man who had the courage to reject society's efforts to impose a "racial" identity upon him. He steadfastly refused to be labeled "colored" (black) or "white" and considered classification the nemesis of mankind, a reflection of intellectual empty-headedness. A quote from the book: "Thus Toomer propounded the rather unpopular view that the racial issue in America would be resolved only when white America could accept the fact that its racial 'purity' was a myth, that indeed its racial isolation produced blandness and lack of character. On the other hand, racial purity among blacks was just as much a myth and only encouraged defensiveness and unconscious imitation, like that of an adolescent who defines his revolt against his parents by the very values he is trying to renounce. Race, he said, was a fictional construct, of no use for understanding people." We need more people like Jean Toomer today!

The authors make it clear that Toomer rejected the racist ideologies of both 'blackness' and 'whiteness':
"And he had lived among blacks, among whites, among Jews, and in groups organized without racial labels around a shared interest such as literature or psychology, moving freely from any one of these groups to any other. One mark of membership in the 'colored' group, he said, was acceptance of the 'color line' with its attendant expectations; neither his family nor he had ever been so bound. To be in the white group would also imply the exclusion of the other."
It's a great book!

Terrific Basie.....

I was surprised to find an album by Basie where the arrangements were by Bill Holman and 8 of 10 selections were written by Holman. This was recorded in 1976 and I've owned my copy only within the last 8 years.

When one thinks of the Basie band, you automatically think of the foremost arrangers Ernie Wilkins, Neal Hefti and Sammy Nestico......three superb arrangers and composers in their own right! There are exceptions, fine compositions by his own sidemen (re. my review of "Chairman Of The Board"). Bill Holman is in a different plane with many credits, his own band and his work with Stan Kenton being most familiar to me. What really knocked me out, was his complex arrangements being completely written in the Basie style. There is not one selection here that can be played without identifying it immediately with the Count Basie style. A possible exception might be the closer, "The Git", a real burner which starts off with the drumming of Butch Miles and found me thinking of Buddy Rich, at least before the Count's solo kicked in.

There's a nice mixture of tempos on this set , including some fine blues as you would expect with the Basie band. My favorites are the slower tempo ones: "Flirt", "Something To Live For" (Duke and Billy would have appreciated this arrangement), and "Swee'pea" , the affectionate nickname and a fine tribute to Billy Strayhorn.

I was gratified to write a review of something with a sales rating of under 100,000 but also surprised that there was only one review. Usually my reviews seem to rank consderably lower in popularity. That said, this is a fine Basie album which should appeal to his fans,followers of Bill Holman, or any fan of big band jazz.

Worth a Read

I'm hard-pressed to figure out how to describe the writing of Kate Clinton. Given that she is a comedian, it seems like funny should be a part of my description, but it's not. There were a few places where I actually chuckled while reading, but I can count those instances on one hand. Her writing seems to be more of a wry, feminist, every-woman take on current and political events. She's flippant and sarcastic and gets to the point of each of her essays quickly.

So once the expectation of comedy is lowered, what's left is a collection of essays that sum up the liberal, feminist, queer view of politics from 2006 to late 2008. The last throes of Bush are described and then the primaries and general presidential election are re-told from Clinton's perspective. Given that she is a 60 year old woman who's not afraid to speak her mind, her essays obviously state her points firmly. She doesn't beat around the Bush, she beats the Bush directly.

Clinton's take on the last few years of politics is a worthy read, voiced from a feminist that is worth listening to.

Stopping to smell the roses when you thought it was a swamp.

I received Bland Simpson's "Into the Sound Country" as a gift. I've had it by the bed for my night reading. It's an unlikely book for me to read -- no plot, no tight narrative, no famous folks or... well, it's different.
You walk into it rather slowly. I kept thinking of John Parker quoting White's description of Roanoke Island (site of the "Lost Colony") as "the goodliest land under the cope of heaven."
"I got no respect for a man with judgment like that," Parker said.
Simpson takes on this swamp filled, brackish, mosquito plagued, twisted tree, run-down and Godforsaken part of the world (except for the beaches) that he and his ancestors grew up in, and Suffering Cats! You can't put the book down. You want to go there. Hell, you want to LIVE there. Remarkable.
I read until I couldn't keep awake last night and then for some reason -- perhaps my wife being away baby sitting in Charlottesville -- I woke up this morning a bit! before five and finished the book. Hated for it to end. That kind of book.
Simpson teaches Creative Writing at Chapel Hill. His long ago past was at one time my present, the forties and fifties on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. It's a funny book to recommend. Who the hell has time for a book that is so... leisurely. And such good company. I read passages to Jutta. Long passages. That kind of book.
Very quietly in a sort of sneaky way, you get a picture of this guy and his family. Not a bad life. Not bad at all. You'll be glad you got to know him and them. His wife takes pictures. Good ones. You'll like her too.

Great Book that will live for centuries about "THE SOUND COUNTRY" of NC

I don't know how I missed discovery of this book until now June2015. I have read many of Bland Simpson's books, and he is a gifted storyteller as well as a "Creative Writing Professor".
I am a native DownEaster from Davis Shore and Corebanks, and I have read almost everything that's ever been written about the "Sound Country" but this is the best I've ever read and spoke to me in almost every sentence.
I did not know that Bland Simpson's knowledge and memory about things here in our coasts and buried in our saltmarshes exceeded my own knowledge and exceeded anyone I've ever read.

Yolanda Fontes sat in her prison scrubs and watched the families gathered all around her. Husbands were reconnecting with wives, sisters with sisters, mothers with children. It was a sunny Sunday in April, and the families had flocked to the Eloy Detention Center, a dreary for-profit immigration prison in rural Arizona, to visit their detained loved ones. A female prisoner sat with her small son on her lap, her arms wrapped tightly around him, as if she were imagining never letting him go. The aunt who had brought the little boy spoke sorrowfully to her sister as the child snuggled in his mother’s embrace. Nearby, an imprisoned father sat across a table from his wife, clutching her hand. They were trying to talk, but their four-year-old daughter, hungry and tired, fussed on the floor below.

None of the families in the packed room had any privacy. An impassive guard presided over their melancholy reunions, keeping a close watch on the mothers and fathers dressed in jailbird scrubs. The visiting room was bleak and windowless, lit by glaring prison lights. It was a beautiful spring day outside, but no rays of sunlight pierced its cinder block walls.

Alone among the detainees in this stark space, Yolanda had no family visiting, just me, a writer who had come to hear her story. She was glad to be out of her prison unit, and she was full of smiles, determined to be cheerful. Yet her tale was grim, and she looked at the other detainees’ kids wistfully as she recounted it. During the two years she’d spent locked up in Eloy, she’d seen her two little girls and her little boy only sporadically. The children, all American citizens, lived in a distant suburb northwest of Phoenix. They came to visit their mom only when a relative or friend could spare the time to drive the two-hundred-mile round trip to Eloy. The last time Yolanda had seen them was two months before.

Yolanda was thirty-two. She’d slipped into Arizona from Mexico seventeen years before, when she was just fifteen. She spoke flawless English and, even though she had no papers, she’d almost never had any difficulty finding a job. And until two years ago, she’d never had trouble with immigration. But the father of her two younger children regularly beat her, and one attack triggered a series of disasters that eventually landed her in jail and now detention.

The abusive ex had the two kids and Yolanda was facing deportation. She could have accepted “removal” to Mexico right away—and gotten out of Eloy—but if she were deported she would lose the children. So she stayed in the prison month after month, fighting her case, hoping to persuade a judge to overturn the deportation order, praying to get back to her daughters and her son.

Yolanda’s spirits flagged just once during the two hours we talked. The last time the kids came to see her, she said, her five-year-old, Little V, had looked at her suspiciously. “He told me I didn’t look like his mother,” she said, her eyes filling with tears. Her own child was starting to forget her.

Down in Nogales, on the Mexican side of the border, Gustavo Sanchez Perez was just as worried about his kids. He was a twenty-five-year-old landscaper from Phoenix; I met him early one hot July morning at a Catholic comedor just steps from the international line. He was one of sixty deportees eating a hearty breakfast of beans and rice in a humble dining hall run by an order of Mexican nuns. Like Yolanda, Gustavo had moved with his family from Mexico to the United States as a child. Born in Veracruz, he’d come to Phoenix at the age of eight and lived there ever since. He spoke perfect English. He and his wife had two small children, a boy of four and a baby girl, both of them US citizens.

Gustavo had been arrested in Phoenix for riding his bicycle at night without a light and then detained by ICE. He’d rotated through several detention centers, in Arizona and in Colorado, before being tossed back over the border into Nogales. He’d always worked hard to support his children. What was their mother doing now, he wondered, without his wages coming in?

He was staying in a shelter, but he would have to leave soon. Nogales was reeling under a deluge of deportees from the United States, and the town’s shelters didn’t have the resources to house los deportados longer than three days. Gustavo would have to move on. His mother in Phoenix had advised him to go back to Veracruz, but he had no intention of returning to a place where everyone was a stranger. He knew where he needed to be: with his children, at home, in Phoenix. The way to get back to them lay over the border and through the Arizona desert, but the journey would be perilous in more ways than one. He could die out there in the heat, as so many had done before him. And if he made it through, he ran the risk of arrest. “If they catch me,” he said, “I get ten years in jail.”

Important book about American immigration policies

This is an important book and should be a must read for everyone in the United States as most of us have absolutely no clue what we as a country are doing to the most vulnerable of our own citizens. I'm not even finished reading this book, but this quote from page 118 was what made me want to review this even before I'd finished reading: "ICE's figures show that from July 2010 to September 2012 - the period during which Elena was expelled from the country - the United States deported some 204,816 parents who left behind children who were US citizens." The story of Elena - who was brought her by her mother when she was 13, and as a single parent of two children was deported to leave those children behind (the option of bringing them with her wasn't even given) to be placed into foster care, is appalling. "If the number of deported parents is high, the number of children left essentially parentless is staggering. Between 2998 and 2013, researches estimate that some 660,000 US citizen children lost a parent to deportation." "In Arizona, anecdotal evidence shows that hundreds of kids of deportees are being held in foster care on any given day, Laurie told me. Ironically, at the same time that Arizona's CPS was taking custody of kids with perfectly capable parents like Elena, the agency was being investigated by the state for its failure to monitor more than six thousand troubled families on its rolls. Many of their children had been abused or neglected; a few ended up dead." This book is so disturbing and people don't take into account the fact that much of the southwest portions of the US belonged to Mexico until the mid-1800s and the Spanish culture there is embedded into the society. People who come from Central America to the US for better opportunities don't feel alienated when they arrive here - they view it just as an extension of home, only away from the cartels and gun-violence which, ironically, has developed as a result of the United States exporting weapons to these countries, and our drug dependent culture encouraging the cartels to make their money here. I'm sorry to have to say this, but we are the ones responsible for the immigration issue and we are the ones who are taking responsible immigrants away from the children who are then left here to become alienated because they lack the family ties that could have been saved had we not deported their parents. Donald Trump - wake up and smell the roses - you are turning them into dung because of your misguided zeal! After finishing this book today I am no less committed to seeing that it become widely available to persons truly interested in what our misguided immigration policies are costing both the immigrants and us as US citizens.

This is raw uncut footage of "illegal" immigrants caught in the social "in"-Justices and Machievelian twists if a tortuous immigration system in America. My in-laws talked about the hardships they encountered when they immigrated to the US through Ellis Island as they sought refuge from persecution in Eastern Europe. Theirs pales as compared to the experiences of those who "illegally" cross America's Southern borders today. Extended incarcerations of years, felony convictions for those caught in human trafficking's clutches, the agonies of separations from family are caught in this compelling narrative that screams for U.S. Immigration reform and social justice for those illegally entering Ameica's borders. Readers beware- this book will open your eyes to a hidden world of injustice, greed, and averice in how America "deals" with "illegal" immigrants. Is this really the land of freedon , opportunity and "justice" anymore? Not for those who choose to risk all to enter America's borders without a "Golden Ticket"! Read and weep!

Well written and compelling, Ms. Regan has succeeded in writing a book that all of us need to read.

I have to say Detained and Deported shook me to the core. As a Mid-westerner, the press has done a remarkable job of keeping us in the dark, and
I had no idea of the immigrant situation in the Southwestern United States. I am appalled and disheartened by what we “Americans” are capable of doing to those seeking a better life.

Long gone are the days when America opened its arms to the tired, the poor, and those yearning to breathe free. Our attitude now seems to be “We don’t want you here, but we’re more than happy to incarcerate you”. Prison for profit. Abuse. Inadequate housing and food. Random racial profiling by law enforcement and border guards. Brought here as a child by your parents? Fleeing persecution or violence? Too bad! Back you go.

Thank God for the volunteers and activists who are working so hard to help, comfort, inform, feed, clothe, and house undocumented immigrants! The system has not only failed these people, but has been designed to extend their suffering. This has to stop, and the sooner Americans open their eyes to what is going on at present in their country, the sooner lives can be saved, and families can be restored.

Zarzuela suited this aim well, depicting the lives of everyday citizens amid the rapidly changing norms brought about by industrialization and urbanization. It also integrated regional differences into a unified vision of Spanish national identity: a zarzuela performance set in Madrid could incorporate forms of music and folk dancing native to areas of the country as far distant as Andaluc�a and Catalonia. A true "music of the people" (m�sica popular), zarzuela offered its audiences an image of what a more modern Spain might look like.

Zarzuela alone could not create a unified concept of Spanish identity, particularly with competition from new forms of mass culture and the rise of the Primo de Rivera dictatorship in the 1920s. Yet, as this riveting study shows, it made an indelible contribution to popular culture and nationalism. Young's history brings to life the stories, songs, and evolving contexts of a uniquely Spanish art form.

Holub's (I Have a Weird Brother Who Digested a Fly) book looks as if it's going to move Cinderella to cowboy country ("Yee-haw! Way out west, near a ripsnortin' town you never heard of..."), but it turns out to be a moral tale about adapting to life in a stepfamily, from Cinderdog's point of view. Holub isn't sure where to stop: a courtship, a marriage, a cat show, a capture by a desperado, a rescue and even a new baby are all crammed into 32 dizzying pages. Life on the ranch for Cinderdog and his buddy Cowboy Carl is bliss, until Cactus Kate rides into town with her precious cat, Wicked, and Carl decides to marry her. Cinderdog registers protest about life with his new stepmother, but Carl turns him a deaf ear. Only in a vulnerable moment, after Cinderdog rescues Wicked the cat from a desperado, does the feline confess that she is just as uncomfortable in her new family as he is. Harmony reigns until the surprise ending: a new baby! The audience for the book remains in question. Children young enough to appreciate the floppy-eared hero, the cowboy talk and the folksy, faux-primitive illustrations will likely miss the book's lesson about stepfamilies. Older children, more sensitive to the tension in such families, may be put off by the story's relentless cheer. Ages 3-8. (Mar.)

K-Gr 3-Cinderdog lives with his "best bud," Cowboy Carl. The two of them work together on the Gitalong Ranch by day, and sing songs under the stars at night. Then along come Cactus Kate and her "ornery furball," a feline named Wicked. Without consulting either pet, the two humans fall in love and get married. When Cactus Kate and Wicked move in, Cinder soon discovers that things will be very different. For instance, Kate has a whole bunch of rules for him to follow, while the lazy cat is allowed to do as she pleases. After a trip to a cat show, where Cinder somehow manages to win the "most unusual cat" prize, the two pets are kidnapped by a bad guy, escape, and eventually settle their differences. Just as things settle down, they find themselves faced with an even bigger challenge: Cowbaby. The story is told in a stereotypical Western dialogue, peppered with expressions such as "Jumpin' junebugs" and adjectives like "rascally" and "pesky." Done in bright colors, the watercolor, acrylic, and gouache paintings are as exaggerated as the story and the dialect. Although it is a bit far-fetched, this tale might amuse fans of Westerns and may also be helpful to children of blended families who face a similar situation.-Karen Scott, Valley Intermediate School, Pelham, AL

Funny book with a message

When Cowgirl Kate and Cowboy Carl decide to "get hitched", Kate's cat and Carl's dog wind up living together on the same ranch. And it's hard for these 2 pets to get along. What a great way to show stepkids how to get along with stepsiblings! The illustrations in are funny and cute and they add to the story. In one, the dog paints in the word "Don't" on "The Gitalong Ranch" sign, so it reads: The Don't Gitalong Ranch.

A cowdog country

I think it's kind of funny because a cowdog is a dog that goes on a journey. These pictures are painted with watercolors. That is cool. It is actually written and illustrated by the same person named John Holub. It has a lot of detail to it, like patterns, different colors and cowboy clothes.
