Pillow was one of Tennessee's wealthiest planters and lawyers as well as an influential broker in national politics. His friendship with fellow Tennessean James K. Polk brought Pillow a generalship in the Mexican War, where he served under Winfield Scott and Zachary Taylor and antagonized the military establishment with his recklessness and self-promotion. Following the war, Pillow attempted to capitalize on his notoriety as the "hero of Chapultepec" by reentering Democratic party politics. Despite his efforts on behalf of Franklin Pierce, he was unsuccessful in his bid for the vice presidency and the Senate. With the outbreak of the Civil War, Pillow again sought the public stage. His organization of what would become the Army of Tennessee placed him at the forefront of the Confederate war effort. But he was bested by Ulysses S. Grant at Belmont and then suffered disaster at Fort Donelson. Following these defeats, he spent the remainder of the war directing Confederate conscription in the West and leading Confederate cavalry forces. As a result of his role at Fort Donelson, Pillow has been dismissed as a political general with destructive military ambitions. Hughes and Stonesifer argue that such a judgment fails to consider the many contributions made by the dynamic planter-lawyer. They point outPillow's organizational abilities (evidenced before and after Donelson), his standing with distinguished peers such as Joseph Johnston and Braxton Bragg, and his continuing service as an infantry and cavalry leader.

The Political Pillow

Gideon Pillow is someone most people who study the Civil War or antebellum politics have heard of, but not much is ever said of him. Some might know him as the General who fled Ft. Donelson or the guy who helped get James K. Polk elected and became a general in the Mexican War, but is that all he did? After reading this biography you'll learn he did a lot more. If you're like me you only have negative opinions of Pillow and might not be very interested in learning more about him, but I urge you to reconsider. This biography is very fair handed in its criticism and praise. In the end Pillow was an ultimate failure in warfare, but not in life.

The black sheep of the Confederate command

I am endlessly fascinated by the rough-and-tumble politics of America's 19th century and the colorful, sometimes absurd characters who rose to prominence. And, as a Civil War buff, I enjoy reading about the various commanders both great and small. Among the books in my ever-growing collection this is a true delight. Pillow was a wealthy lawyer and planter who knew the right people in high places and finagled commands of great responsibility in both the Mexican and Civil Wars despite lacking military training or, apparently, common sense. Yet he was recklessly brave and his men - some of them - and his public - most of it - adored him. Every page of this highly readable biography is packed with documented facts that boggle the mind, such that a certain level of wryness in the prose style is unavoidable. But this is far more than a "gee whiz" account, as the authors find evidence to dispel some of the worst disasters for which Pillow has been blamed, especially the surrender of Ft. Donelson in 1862. A self-promoter, brown-noser, and back-stabber he may have been, and it came back to haunt him even when he may not have deserved it. You will probably be most amazed to think Gideon Pillow had as good a chance to be President as some who made it, like Zachary Taylor or Franklin Pierce.

Máximo Castillo and the Mexican Revolution is the first English-language translation of the memoirs of General Máximo Castillo of Chihuahua, a pivotal figure in the civil war that consumed Mexico between 1910 and 1920. Born into rural poverty, Castillo experienced first-hand the repression of Porfirio Díaz’s autocratic regime. When the wealthy statesman and author Francisco I. Madero challenged Díaz for the Mexican presidency, campaigning on an idealistic platform of democratic reforms, Castillo joined the many Mexicans who supported Madero’s candidacy. As the campaign progressed and political tensions escalated, liberal democrats, including Castillo, organized a widespread popular revolt against Díaz and his followers. Thereafter, Castillo quickly rose in the ranks, becoming the leader of a revolutionary faction in Chihuahua similar to the one headed by General Emiliano Zapata in the state of Morelos.

Castillo’s role in the Mexican Revolution, in which he emerged as an influential leader who fought for land reform before being imprisoned and exiled, was largely forgotten by history until the discovery of his memoirs. A Spanish-language edition of Castillo’s writings, edited by Jesús Vargas Valdés and published in 2009, conveys the movement’s tenets, triumphs, and setbacks in the words of one of its most passionate leaders. Ana-Isabel Aliaga-Buchenau’s translation of this critical work into English expands the reach of Castillo’s valuable, but often overlooked, perspective on the events of the Revolution.

By the time the Civil War began, internal political dissension tore at the solidarity of the Cherokee tribe and a simmering thirty-year-old blood feud threatened to drive an even deeper divide. Entry into the war on the Confederate side intensified these intratribal tensions and ultimately two distinct factions emerged. One faction, loyal to Chief John Ross and led by John Drew—Ross’s nephew by marriage—formed a regiment. Another unit rallied around Ross’s rival, Stand Watie. The Watie regiment was largely pro-Confederate, whereas many of Drew’s soldiers, though fighting for the Confederate cause, secretly allied with a pro-Union, antislavery society known as the Keetoowahs. They had little sympathy for the southern whites, who had driven them from their ancestral homelands in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Drew’s regiment nonetheless earned a degree of infamy during the Battle of Pea Ridge, in Arkansas, for scalping Union soldiers.

Gaines unfolds the history of Drew’s regiment amid a larger narrative of military events within the Indian Territory. United action, as he shows, proved almost impossible because of continuing factionalism within the tribes and the desertion of many Native Americans to the Union forces. Indeed, Drew’s regiment, effectively disbanded by mid-1862, bears the distinction of being the only Confederate regiment to lose almost its entire membership through desertion to the Union ranks.

Unraveling the Mystery: Cherokee Nation Politics

Being of Cherokee decent and having been raised in the heart of the Cherokee nation, I was immediately intrigued when I saw this title. The mystery of the internal conflicts and relations within the Cherokee Nation has been an interest of mine ever since I was a child hearing the oral stories. The stories were confusing then, and after reading Gaines' book, I now have a better grasp of the situation that was responsible for tearing apart the land I was reared-in and the people who were rearing me. Gaines does an excellent job of researching a subject that has very few sources available, and his writing style is smooth and concise. This is a very dense book; the information is packed in tightly. However, for a book on regimental history, I found it an easy read full of insight into a nation that to this day is still divided on issues that plagued them before the Civil War.

Thought you knew about the south and the civil war....try again.

Excellent read, learn about a wider truth of the civil war, having these as my ancestors made it a little more personal, yet and still a great book, and insight to the south and unity of all people from the south. Not just a slave, black vs white scenario which is far too common, and not set in reality of this great country. Being the father of Noble Drew Ali, and having Albert PIke as a brigadier in John Drews regiment gives a new dichotomy to the outlook and coversation of the civil war and all it's players, including the "always" heroic north.

Good Ideas But A Dry Writing Style

I have an earlier version of this book which was copyrighted in 1982. There is plenty of good information about the more common Jewish holidays with some mentions of more minor ones. Each chapter is pretty well structured with a summary of each holiday's origins, preapration steps, prayers and customs on the day, new approaches, and food affiliated with each special day.
Although there is some good information within the chapters, it is not the easiest read as the author could summarize the basic points of each holiday more succintly. Also, the author's writing style has a very dry style with little style to cause the reader to be overly intrigued. A few unusual customs were learned here and there. However, the Omer Period discussion leaves some questions. The recipes described are a nice light touch to an otherwise matter of beleif account of the Jewish Holidays. The gloassary and bibliographies are pretty good.
Again, the goal of the Season Of Our Joy was to explain the meaning behind the Jewish Holidays. Jews who have an extensive foundation of their reglion may be able to get more out of Waskow's analysis. But those individuals who are trying to renew their interest in Judiasm may be a bit lost.

My favorite book for exploring the Jewish spiritual cycle

After almost a decade of living with this book, it remains my favorite for entering the Jewish cycle of observance and celebration. I return to it over and over as a source for creative, meaningful and deeply spiritual ways of participating in Jewish life. The guidance given in this book penetrates the practices and rituals, to allow me to embrace the essence of Jewish spirituality. The book gives an historical context for the days of observance as well as innovative approaches to their celebration. It is a treasure and I give it as a gift when people convert to Judaism, become a bar or bat mitzvah or when they seek a deeper understanding of Judaism.

Old Reliable Indeed

I feel that this biography was good, but not great. It could have been a bit longer and shed more light on Hardee after the Civil War for one thing. But overall I think the biography did a "reliable" job. Hardee's impressive Civil War career was handled very well I thought. Hughes focuses almost entirely on this and you can't help but wonder what might have happened if Hardee had been placed in command of the Army of Tennessee instead of Hood.........or if Hardee had accepted permanant command after Bragg resigned. When I think of Hardee I think of Longstreet, both seemed to be the good reliable corps commanders that could be counted on in their respected armies, but neither were able to reach the level of a Jackson, Thomas, or Hancock as corps commanders.

I have the audiobook version and I feel like I lived every moment of Jager's childhood. It's well written, open and honest; it's not only interesting, but a journey through the history of the American family farm.

A warm and wonderful portrait of family farming long ago

It's been a long time since I read this book, but I always recommend it to anyone who is interested in farming, the Depression, family life at its best or simply good writing. EIGHTY ACRES is a modern classic of family farming as it was several decades ago. The Jager farm was near McBain, Michigan, which is less than an hour from Reed City, where I grew up - both towns in Osceola County. I have read this book a couple times in the past ten years, and will probably read it again one day. It ranks right up there with a few other farming memoir classics: Curt Harnack's WE HAVE ALL GONE AWAY, Curt Stadtfeld's FROM THE LAND AND BACK and Anne-Marie Oomen's PULLING DOWN THE BARN. All four of these books are better than the recent bestseller of Iowa farm life in the Depression, LITTLE HEATHENS, which ain't a bad book itself. Nuff said. Loved this book. - Tim Bazzett, author of the REED CITY BOY trilogy

Wonderful!

I did not grow up in the Great Depression, nor Michigan, when and where this book takes place. I grew up on a farm in Iowa in the 1960s, yet this book described my childhood perfectly! The work ethic, parental discipline and life in rural America Jager describes is now a part of history. I am thankful he captured it so well for future generations. If you grew up on a farm, you will love this book as well!

About the Author
Gertrude Chandler Warner was born in 1890 in Putnam, Connecticut, where she taught school and wrote The Boxcar Children because she had often imagined how delightful it would be to live in a caboose or freight car. Encouraged by its success, she went on to write eighteen more stories about the Alden Children.

In this first book in the series, you meet Benny, Henry, Jessie and Violet, four children whose parents have died and have no where to go. They find an abandoned boxcar and call it home. The end is more surprising than you can imagine.

This book has just the right amount of photos versus information. The writing is textbook style but without all the quizzes at the end of the sections. A great reference for your library. (and a surprising good gift for the history buff)
