Amazon.com Review
Harry Hay is the acknowledged father (or mother, as he might prefer) of the modern gay liberation movement. As a Communist Party organizer and historian who founded the Mattachine Society in 1949, Hay began turning out essays, position papers, critical studies, and manifestos concerning what it means to be gay in the world. Radically Gay is a collection of those writings, edited by historian Will Rosco, and its breadth and depth is amazing. Radically Gay is an important contribution to gay history and letters; it tells us not only where we have been, but, more importantly, where we might be going.

From Publishers Weekly
In 1950, Hay and fellow activists in Los Angeles founded the Mattachine Society, a pioneering homosexual rights group that helped lay the groundwork for contemporary lesbian/gay activism. This collection of Hay's essays, talks, pamphlets and manifestos reflects his insistence that gays are a cultural minority with shared values, psychological orientation, historical heritage and modes of communication. This perspective flowed from Hay's research into French Renaissance "fool" societies, which staged public plays spiked with political satire and gender reversal, and into the Native American berdache, a practice whereby men live as women (or vice versa) and combine the work and social roles of both sexes while being recognized as a distinct third gender. In 1979, Hay and others launched the "radical faerie" network, providing support groups and emphasizing gay spirituality to counter urban depersonalization. His pointed critique of homophobia and his exhortations to gays seeking self-acceptance make this collection especially timely. Roscoe, who has taught anthropology and Native American studies at the University of California, provides a useful introduction as well as commentaries on each selection. From Library Journal
This collection of writings spans 50 years in the intellectual development of Hay, one of the founders of the modern Gay Rights Movement. Beginning in the late 1940s, Hay organized the Mattachine Society, one of the earliest homophile groups formed to bring public acceptance to the lives of gay Americans. For better or worse, Hay formulated the idea of the homosexual as a political minority, and since then he has been in the vanguard fighting for equal treatment for gays and lesbians. Following the evolution of Hay's intellectual development in roughly chronological, this strong collection of essays puts the current debate over gay rights in a clearer historical perspective; for example, despite the recent battle over gays in the military, Hay organized one of the first public demonstrations against the military's exclusionary rules in 1966. Now, at the age of 84, Hay is active in the radical faerie movement, which celebrates the fundamental differences and unique perceptions with which gays view the world. This title will be of particular interest to the gay studies community, as well as more knowledgeable lay readers patronizing larger collections.?Jeffery Ingram, Newport P.L., Ore.

Great and original contribution to both gay rights and gender identity literature
By J.S.M.
One of Hay's strengths, to me, is the fact that he comes out of a different tradition than the post-structuralist philosophical one which is prevalent these days. Hay was able to talk about the experience of being queer and of what the possible social implications of that might be by taking the philosophical material he got as an instructor in Marxism for the Communist Party, particularly that deriving from Engel's work "On Private Property and the Family", and extending and extending it, modifying it here, dropping some of the dogmatic features of that type of Marxist thought along the way and instead integrating the lived experience of being queer and spirituality into a heady mix which gives insight both for queer people, focussing on queer men, themselves about themselves and of the role that gays and lesbians play and have played in society throughout history, how capitalism shapes the queer experience, looking at homophobia as being a reinforcer of patriarchy and ultimately patriarchal capitalism, and what non-western parallels for homosexuality are.

Quite a powerful and interesting mix. Highly recommended.

2nd only to Oscar Wilde
By Jeffery Mingo
Harry Hay is one of the fathers of American gay rights. But this is not essentialist idol-praising. Hay was a big part of the big pre-Stonewall organization, Mattachine Society. He was a strong Communist, back when it was risky to be one. In addition, Hay knows a lot about gender theory and gay history and such. He's a sage. Will Roscoe has written a number of important gay books, especially concerning gay Native Americans. Basically, this is an important historical subject written by a strong gay author. You should peep this book if you can.

By Ray Austin
Autobiographical collection of papers of Harry Hay gives a clear idea of the early years when Gay Rights became recognized as a human rights issue to gay men and women. Hay provided leadership to start a movement that continues today. Now days we take so many of our rights for granted and do not know how gay people were treated in the past. As a gay man I am pleased to recognized that the gay movement is part of my heritage and I am proud to be part of it..

Theresienstadt: Hitler's Gift to the Jews, by Norbert Troller

Theresienstadt: Hitler's Gift to the Jews is a gripping account of one man's experiences in the most deceptive of all the places in which the Nazis incarcerated the Jews during the Holocaust: Hitler's "model" ghetto, Theresienstadt.

Norbert Troller's memoir recounts his two years in Theresienstadt from early 1942 until September 1944, when he was deported to Auschwitz after the Nazis discovered he and other artists were smuggling out drawings that revealed the horrors of Theresienstadt. Miraculously preserved by his friends, Troller's drawings and watercolors of life inside Theresienstadt add a compelling dimension to his story and are published here for the first time.

Troller, a Czech Jew from a prominent family of businessmen, was a trained architect. His keen observations of human nature, of the experiences of his fellow prisoners, and of his own existence are embedded within a powerful history of the Theresienstadt atrocities. He records his painful journey to and arrival at the ghetto; his first weeks there, his futile efforts to protect his relatives; and his arrest and incarceration in the dreaded "Little Fortress" where he almost died before being deported to Auschwitz.

His narrative also reveals the horrors beneath the facade of an "autonomous" Jewish government, which the Nazis used to conceal their plans to exterminate the Jewish population that was supposedly meant for the "elite" of central Europe. In reality, Theresienstadt was nothing more than a convenient collection location for transports to "the East": Auschwitz-Birkenau. The terrible burden of filling the transports with the required number of victims was put on the members of the Elder Council, the Jewish administrative body. Troller says "With devilish baseness and cunning [the Nazis] did dictate the number of victims to be sent east, but they put the burden of selection on the Jews themselves; to select their own coreligionists, relatives, their friends. In the end this unbearable, desperate, cynical burden destroyed the community leaders who were forced to make the selections."

Although many narratives have written about life in the Nazi concentration camps, Troller's account, combining his intimate knowledge of the inner workings of the Theresienstadt and his drawings, is unique in Holocaust studies.

An intimate view of the Nazi mentality. All the things we've come to mistrust & dislike in humans is represented by the entire Nazi era, & certainly in this book. Cruelty, deception, corruption, self-absorption, graft, fraud, cold-bloodedness...on and on.
To anyone determined to learn as much as possible about this dreadful time, it is important to read this book.

From Publishers Weekly
This volume celebrates present-day creativity and future potential, with the title providing a touch point for the optimistic verses: "Girl, you're amazing, the art you create!/ T-shirts in tie-dye, a Mother's day plate,/ / Girl, you're amazing, the sport you can be!/ Swishing that basketball, climbing a tree." Each sunny stanza accompanies scenes of girls working and playing; an all-girl orchestra performs as dancers leap, ballplayers congratulate each other after a game and a calm girl "cool[s] a quarrel" between two friends. Kroll (Hands!; A Carp for Kimiko) composes couplets that might refer to one special person or to many talented people. She closes with a long, rhyming list ("Grace, Emma, Jess, Amy, Chelsea, Christine,/ Cheryl, Dawn, Geetha, Kim, Rachel, Maureen...") in which one's own name, or a friend's, very likely appears. Potter also aims for inclusion in her hip gouaches, which feature girls of all races and appearances. Asymmetrical faces, fashionably mismatched patterns and a quirky palette of faded blue-green, pasty pink and dim yellow recall her daughter Giselle Potter's cerebral-but-groovy artwork; the compositions are not quite as accomplished, but the characters possess an equal amount of verve and joie de vivre. Because the pictured athletes and scientists often appear older than the usual picture book audience, this whimsical appreciation might address elementary-schoolers, big sisters and mothers alike. Ages 5-9. (Mar.)

Ages 5-8. In snappy, upbeat rhymes, girls are told they can create, learn, perform, and accomplish an amazing variety of feats, from packing their own lunches to becoming a food drive director; e.g. "Girl, you're amazing, the things that you are! / Great babysitter and spelling bee star." Bearing a strong resemblance to the art of Giselle Potter, the spirited mixed-media artwork reflects the bounce and optimism of the text. The few males pictured, alas, clearly need female assistance. Similar in spirit to Norma Klein's Girls Can Do Anything (1973), this exhortation for female empowerment may fit that earlier era better than today, but this does encourage girls to realize their talents and pursue their dreams. Wow! My 4 year old and I are entranced and empowered!
By Julia DeVillers
I got this book out of the library yesterday and read it to my daughter. We both loved it. And to cap it off, the book ends with a lyrical listing of girls' names. My daughter, who has an unusual name, literally screamed with joy to see her name in a book for the first time. "I want to keep this book forever and ever," she told me so I am here on the site today buying her her own copy. Highly recommended. Julie.

This is an incredibly empowering, inspiring, and just plain FUN book for girls and the people who love them. My daughter and I have read it together since she was an infant. She is now 11 and still comes to me occasionally to request we read it together. Very special times... I love this book so much that I always try to keep a few on hand. Whenever someone has a daughter, it is the first gift I give them.

A Very Relaxed Approach
By Suzette Morrow
I liked some of Szekely's ideas to get creativity sparked, but they were more like rainy day activities. There were no visuals except black and white images at chapter breaks. I had the feeling it was geared more toward a home school situation than a structured art education program with standards. If you are looking for a book on fun stuff to do with your grandkids on summer vacations this might be ok for you. If you are an art educator looking for some new lessons, pass.

From Publishers Weekly
Stozier, a psychoanalyst and a history professor at John Jay College, City University of New York, writes about those Christians who believe that God will remake the world in a firestorm of destruction and send Jesus back to rule for a millennium. The author spent five years attending services and interviewing Pentecostals, Baptists and Evangelicals in New York City. His 27 respondents--among them an ex-prostitute, a multimillionaire entrepreneur turned missionary, a fiery preacher and a Wall Street broker--regarded their past as sinful or worthless. Their born-again experiences, in Strozier's formulation, represent attempts to heal traumatized, fractured selves. The final chapters of this cogent, worthy study attempt to place Christian fundamentalism on a continuum of apocalyptic belief by contrasting it with Hopi Indians' myths of impending eco-catastrophe and with New Ager premonitions of a dawning Aquarian Age.
Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
Strozier (history, CUNY) uses psychohistory to examine the apocalyptic outlook of fundamentalists in New York City. He admits to possible bias as a lapsed nominal Christian and to studying a narrow geographical milieu. He spent several years becoming close to and interviewing a widely varied mix of individuals, from a former prostitute to a preacher. He avoids condescension but remains unable to accept his subjects' beliefs. The common theme of the "broken thread," in which the evil past is rejected in favor of a God-transformed future, permeates these beliefs, as do biblical literalism and a fascination with endless violence, with the agency of violence shifted to God. Filled with insightful vignettes, this would be appropriate for public libraries.
- Richard S. Watts, San Bernardino Cty. Lib., Cal.

From Booklist
The liberal arts today stress "cross-disciplinary" research. Both professor of history and psychoanalyst, Strozier takes the injunction to heart. He has taught himself the art of participant observation--the method synonymous with traditional social anthropology; he can also analyze popular culture; and somewhere along the line, he has become something of a Bible scholar. The research skills he cultivated in these several pursuits inform this book on those Christian denominations that are united by a belief in the impending end of human history. Strozier joined several fundamentalist churches in New York City in order to observe their practices and to arrange the interviews that constitute the book's first half and which he analyzes psychologically, as if the interviewees had come to him for help. The second half of the book places contemporary fin-de-si{Š}ecle fundamentalism in the context of American history and to a lesser extent contrasts it with fundamentalism elsewhere. There's something uncomfortable about Strozier's relation to fundamentalism--intimations of condescension, perhaps, and of an exploitation that he frequently repudiates. But the discomfort makes for good reading, as does Strozier's effortless style. Roland Wulbert

A classic!
By Karen A. Wolf
This book is a classic in nursing history, presenting a feminist critque of the patriarchial health care system. A popular book of the 1970's and 1980's the book helped to launch the feminist consciouness raising of nurses. Still relevant today, the book speaks to the ongoing struggles of nurses as woment to gain true control over nursing education and practice.

Mandatory for nurses and others in health care!
By T. T. Goodell
This book presents a critical view of the relationship between nurses and hospitals, who employ over 50% of the registered nurses in the U.S. Ashley points out that although nurses are the largest group of health care providers, their voices are silenced by hospitals, physician groups and regulatory agencies who fear the upset in power that would occur if caring, professional nurses were put in charge. The historical roots of nurse oppression are traced and ample evidence is presented. A must-read for nurses, nursing students, hospital administrators, physicians and anyone with an open mind!

Excellent historical work for nurses
By Jenvon
I first bought this book shortly after publication, and unfortunately, the author passed away soon after its publication. Her insightful look into the history of how nursing became the handmaiden to hospitals and physicians was excellent. It is useful even now, because a group of people who do not know their history, will fall victim to the dangers that were chronicled long ago. Those of us who have been in nursing long enough are seeing that no matter what level of education an individual has (and I have had a master's degree in nursing for close to 40 years), unless the individual is secure within his/herself as a person, all the education in the world is not going to make that individual a better nurse, or a better person. True advocacy for patients and their families only comes when the person has the integrity to do what is right, rather than go along to get along. I am sure that the author ruffled more than a few feathers when she wrote that book back in the 80's, but its still applicable for nurses today.

An excellent historical read.

The Boys from Little Mexico: A Season Chasing the American Dream, by Steve Wilson

For nineteen straight years, the all-Hispanic boys’ soccer team from Oregon’s Woodburn High has made the playoffs. As they prepare to make it twenty, one thing will become clear: Los Perros play the beautiful game with heart, pride, and their lives on the line. Their spirited drive gives a rare sense of hope and unity to a blue-collar farming community that has been transformed by waves of immigrants over recent decades, a town locals call “Little Mexico.” Watched over by a south Texas transplant—a surrogate father to half the squad—this band of brothers must learn to come together on the field and look after each other off it.

More than just riveting sports writing, The Boys from Little Mexico is about the fight for the future of the next generation—and a hard, true look at boys dismissed as gang-bangers, told to “go home” by lily-white sideline crowds. The wins and losses they notch along the way spin a striking tale about what it takes to capture the American Dream.

From Booklist
The soccer team at Woodburn High holds a little-heralded record for most consecutive trips to the state playoffs: “No other high school team in Oregon, in any major sport, has been so good for so long,” writes Wilson. Yet the Bulldogs—Los Perros—aren’t a true powerhouse. Drawing from a student body that is mostly poor, mostly Mexican, Woodburn competes but, year after year, fails to win it all. In a familiar youth-sports-book format, Wilson replays the team’s 2005 season, dramatizing their title hopes game by game while profiling the people—coaches, parents, competing players, civil servants—and places around the players. Los Perros’ problem, ultimately, isn’t a lack of ability but lack of belief in their ability to succeed—a worry that, given the harsh reality facing the immigrant classes, is difficult for their well-intentioned elders to refute. The story line is strong, the perspective is thoughtful, and the on-field action is exciting. Even soccer fans, however, might wish for fewer pages of playing and more about the players. Recommended for fans of Outcasts United (2009) and A Home on the Field (2006). --Keir Graff

Review
In The Boys from Little Mexico, Steve Wilson does more than chase the American Dream—he captures it on the move. Wilson provides us with a glimpse of the future of sports in America, one that promises to be as rich and compelling as the past.—Glenn Stout, author and Series Editor of The Best American Sports Writing

"I hate soccer … but I loved this book. Steve Wilson has written a story where culture, sport, and good writing collide."—Larry Colton, former pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies and author of Counting Coup

"Just as Buzz Bissinger did in Friday Night Lights, Steve Wilson manages to achieve the unexpected: a book about sports that turns out to be about so much more. He wrests poetry out of these boys' lives, while aiming directly for that one destination where we all seek home—the heart."—Luis Alberto Urrea, author of Into the Beautiful North and The Devil's Highway

"With compassion and an unflinching eye, Steve Wilson offers us through sports a preview of a new America, one whose people may look different, but whose virtues of what we like to believe in ourselves remain triumphantly the same.—Howard Bryant, ESPN senior writer and author of The Last Hero

"A real-life account of the inequities surrounding immigration as lived by all concerned, this year in the life of the Woodburn Bulldogs offers no easy answers. The frustrations they face are saddening, but theirs is ultimately a hopeful tale. Very timely, with the World Cup in 2010!"—Dana Brigham, manager/co-owner, Brookline (Mass.) Booksmith

"The Boys from Little Mexico proves once again that the language of sports is universal. Steve Wilson takes a small corner of the world and shows how big it can be, especially when a caring coach partners with some talented players. This book is both heartbreaking and inspiring."—Madeleine Blais, author of In These Girls, Hope Is a Muscle

"The Boys from Little Mexico is an unvarnished and moving account of the dreams and despair of immigrant boys on a high school soccer team who struggle not only in their quest to win the state championship, but also in their desire to adapt as strangers in a new land. If you want to understand your new next-door neighbors, this is the book to read.—Sonia Nazario, author of Enrique's Journey

"On one level Steve Wilson has written a wonderful book about high school athletes in a community banded together by soccer glory. On another level, he's written a wonderful book about race, sociology, and the shifting borders within this country. The Boys from Little Mexico will tell you more about the next generation of Americans than census data and politicians ever could."—Bill Reynolds, author of Fall River Dreams and ’78

"American soccer is far too often viewed as a country club sport. Steve Wilson spent five years earning the trust of Los Perros in order to put a human face on the young men of America's fastest-growing minority group. With empathy and respect, Wilson reveals their compelling stories."—Grant Wahl, senior writer for Sports Illustrated and author of The Beckham Experiment

"Steve Wilson's reporting is deep and true, clear and, at times, heartbreaking. These boys come alive on the page."—David Maraniss, author of Clemente and When Pride Still Mattered

A different type of high-school-sports book
By Jack Morris
It seems that books on high school sports come in three varieties - books on high schools that have achieved excellence in its sport, high schools that have been very poor but shoulder on, and treatises on the evil and/or excesses of high school sports. Steve Wilson's The Boys From Little Mexico: A Season Chasing The American Dream falls into none of these categories.
Wilson's book about the Woodburn High School Bulldog soccer team is a story of immigration and its effect on education in America. It puts a face on the immigration situation and causes the reader to ponder the implications of America's immigration policy.
Wilson does that by chronicling a season with the Woodburn soccer team. The team was made of almost entirely of Hispanic boys, eight of whom were undocumented. The Bulldogs, seeming always the bridesmaid and never the bride, had never won the state championship despite being in the playoffs every year for over two decades.
The Woodburn Bulldogs season has its typical ups and downs. But interlaced in between are the stories of the boys who make up the team. In particular is the story of Octavio, a boy who had trained to play for a pro Mexican team before making his way to Woodburn.
The book does a great job in bringing to life the problems that Mexican immigrants, legal or illegal, face as they try to make a life in their adopted land. The book does bog down from time to time with some of the play by play of a soccer game. And it could be confusing trying to remember the players names especially when a couple of minor characters took on prominent roles towards the end of the season.
However this doesn't detract from the book's message. However heart-breaking the boys' stories can be at times, there is still hope for their future.

Great Story
By ReinoEMO
Most people will never bother to read a story of Hispanic males who play soccer, especially in a Football dominated society as the United States. But still, the story is about defeat, victory, and obstacles, which are things that make for a good sport-related story.

First some background history of Woodburn (tried to spoil as little as possible):
When I read books based on people or events I like doing my research. So being from Oregon this book seemed like a must read and on top of that seemed like it was imperative to learn of this town's people. This book is actually based on the Woodburn High School Varsity Soccer team, from Woodburn, Oregon. Woodburn is a town that is mostly made up of people who are immigrants, most being from Mexico. Hence, "Boys from Little Mexico". But the community is also made up of people of Russian descent, Guatemalan descent, and then the "Americans" (or people of white descent who are Western European background). But Woodburn is best known for the Woodburn Mall which is frequented by people from Washington or Canada, but by those who live near Woodburn know it most by the stereotypes that plague it, such as, gangs, poverty, and "foreigners". By the way, there can be some bias due to the fact that I am of Hispanic/Mexican descent as to why I enjoyed this book, for I can relate to a few things talked about in the book.

A bit about the book and what it is about (trying to spoil as little as possible):
The book is about a group of students, most of which are Hispanic, and about their high school's varsity soccer team that has qualified for several playoffs in a row (during the making of the book it was 20, when I read it the Woodburn Varsity Soccer Team made it about 25 years in a row and won 3 OSAAC state championships in a row). Additionally, the book details, to some extent, the hardships that the students go through, such as, most students suffer from lack of confidence in a society that both rejects and accepts them (the lack of confidence in a mostly white society is the issue I have suffered, at least to considerable extent). Not only does the book talk about that, it talks about other topics that I do not want to spoil for they are big themes talked about in the book, though the themes are big the author does not take a position on saying it was right or wrong, but merely explains the situation. Additionally, it is about Coach Mike Flannigan, a man named Omar (i will not describe who this man is since it will greatly spoil the book), and other staff members and members of the community.

Recommended for those who love sports:
If you enjoy a story about sports and the obstacles needed to be overcome then this book is for you. Also, if you are a person who like looking at the world around you through a scientific eye, though in this case through the sociological perspective, this is a book for you, even if it details problems that you may disagree with you can both enjoy a story and perhaps debate the real issues within the community.

Other thoughts:
You don't have to be a huge fan of soccer to know what the book is about and what is being talked about. It is a book mostly about the students and their mentors. There is no complicated soccer-related slang or terminology, but there are multiple Spanish words used to better describe who the students are, Hispanic students (some born in USA others born in Mexico or Central America). Are the Spanish words complicated? Not really, for it is a single word or two that easily stand out, especially when they are italicized. The words used in the book also do a great job of helping to make the students seem like actual teenagers, or somewhat immature teens. While also making them show their school spirit by using the team's nickname (kind of like how the Portland Blazers use Rip City).

Sadly, though in my opinion the book The Boys from Little Mexico is worthy of being movie-material, not because it is not that good, but because it will never happen since it is NOT a book about Basketball a sport that has a great scouting and youth-development program that finds potential stars in lower income neighborhoods, or Baseball the sport considered America's past-time, and arguably America's favorite sport and arguably most intense and televised sport, Football.

Strong on Immigration / Weak on Soccer
By A. Ross
I'm generally up for any soccer-related book, and this examination of an Oregon high school team comprised almost exclusively of first-generation immigrants (both documented and not) from Mexico promised to be an engaging read. Of course, like all the best "sports" books, its more interesting aspects are about society, not the sport.

The book's framework is the Woodburn High School 2005 boy's soccer season, as the team attempts to make the playoffs for the 20th straight year and win the state championship, after falling short for just as long. Unfortunately, soccer is hard to write about, and Wilson doesn't do a great job capturing the action. Indeed, the book is riddled with obvious mistakes in terminology that will irk most soccer fans (for example, calling the sideline the "foul line" at one point, referring to a "drive" into territory as if it was American football, repeatedly describing free kicks as "foul kicks," using the word "kick" when more specific ones like "cross" or "punt" would make more sense, etc.), which begs the question as to why the publisher didn't hand the manuscript to a random soccer fan to read for accuracy and clarity. The team itself never really comes alive on the page -- there are a few bigger personalities, but everyone else sort of fades into a jumble. It also doesn't help that the season is inexplicably short, which doesn't give Wilson that long to paint a richer picture.

What Wilson does do extremely well is document the history of Mexican immigration to the Oregon valley, starting with the Bracero Program in the 1940s. Some of the best parts are those detailing the wrenching choices parents and children have to make about whether or not to cross the border and perhaps never see each other for years -- or ever again. At the same time, Wilson does a nice job showing how the small town of Woodburn (about halfway between Portland and Salem, on I-5), and especially the school, struggled to adapt to the influx of immigrants. And this is reflected back in the kids, who struggle to adapt to the U.S. and what their future will be, and struggle with confidence and self-esteem. One theme that struck me was the concept that in a lot of these families, the kids are considered more or less adults at age 16 and given the responsibility to make decisions -- often totally on their own -- that will affect the rest of their lives. In that sense, the book succeeds as a sociological portrait of a slice of immigrant community, a portrait that will help anyone with an open mind empathize with the struggles of new immigrants, regardless of their status.

Useful, Engaging Reference
By Kevin L. Nenstiel
Poet Miller Williams, who has been described as "the Hank Williams of poetry," here sets out a list of the formal prosodic structures of poetry as established by centuries of tradition. Not satisfied limiting himself to a few popular forms like sonnets and villanalles (as Boland and Strand did), Williams delves into obscure Celtic, Asian, and Middle-Eastern forms, as well as humorous forms, forgotten European forms, and even nonce forms.

The book is broken into seven chapters dividing forms according to stanza structure, set-length structure, open-ended length forms, and variations. Within the chapters, the forms are organized according to length rather than alphabetically, perhaps making this book slightly more useful to critics than to poets. And the slim number of examples within each entry could have you racing to the library to find out more about how the forms are actually used than Williams can demonstrate.

This book is NOT about the creative process of poetry; for that, try out Susan Goldsmith Woolridge's Poemcrazy or Brenda Ueland's If You Want to Write. Rather, this book shows you the prosodic structures poets have used through history. There is also useful content on how to read the prosody for formal significance and on the importance of the line. Highly lucid, if perhaps a bit short, this book is highly recommended, both for creative writing students and for budding poetry critics, to comprehend more and better the forms that make up the poetic tradition.

Making Art Together: How Collaborative Art-Making Can Transform Kids, Classrooms, and Communities, by Mark Cooper, Lisa Sjostrom

Artist Mark Cooper aims to change the way you think about making art with kids.

Working with schools around the country, Cooper has brought together scores of teachers and hundreds of children to make remarkable collaborative art that has enlivened classrooms and public spaces and been displayed in the nation's most prestigious museums.

In this inspiring, practical, idea-filled book, Cooper shows how any teacher—not just art teachers—can imagine and execute similar projects in their own classrooms.

But more than that, Cooper transforms our sense of possibilities, arguing for a new view of art in schools. Making Art Together is a book about art education structured around big ideas: that adults can flourish in the role of Master Artist, that the perspective of contemporary art offers liberating possibilities for rethinking art in schools, that art can and should be about the larger world, and thus naturally ties in to all areas of the curriculum.

Most of all, Cooper shows us the power of collaboration. From mammoth, freestanding sculptures to billboards against violence to maps of the world, the projects here are all planned, designed, and completed by children themselves. The resulting artwork is complex and ambitious on a scale that would be out of reach for any individual child. Working collaboratively, using a distinctly democratic model, kids actually think and work like adult artists throughout every stage of the project. Together the sky's the limit—the artistic and educational opportunities are boundless.

Making Art Together is a bold, beautifully illustrated book that could—at a time when art budgets are being slashed—revitalize our sense of what art in schools can accomplish.

Review
Making Art Together is a book that is both practical and revolutionary. Using the latest knowledge on holistic learning, Cooper shows how an art project can educate on a multitude of levels and unify classrooms and whole communities. Among other things, the book is a kind of bible of differentiated instruction, guiding the reader through the process of making art that challenges and appeals to many different learning styles. We also see how collaborative art-making can teach the democratic importance of mutual understanding and respect and serve as a source of great pride for individuals and communities. Making Art Together should be required reading for all elementary and secondary school teachers.—John Laughton, composer, professor, and former dean, College of Visual and Performing Arts, University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth

"Every teacher, artist, or parent should have this book for their work with kids."—Henry Horenstein, professor of photography, Rhode Island School of Design, author of Beyond Basic Photography

"Brings an exciting new perspective to the dialogue on the role of art in education." —Education Review

"Students don't have to paint like da Vinci to make worthwhile art, and teachers who have never picked up a paintbrush can still use collaborative art projects to enrich their teaching and the world at large . . . that's the upbeat message of this humane book . . . illustrated with more than 90 photos of wonderful sculptures, murals, and billboards Cooper helped students and teachers across the country create . . . 'The thrill and aha! of thinking creatively, so central to any artistic endeavor, is also essential to education,' the authors proclaim. People need to hear this more than ever now." —Howard Good, Teacher Magazine

"What sets Cooper's ideas apart are his emphasis on democratic decision making throughout the collaborative art process and his ability to make that process accessible to teachers and students alike . . . From the looks of the results, it's worth the journey." —Gwenn Mayers, National Art Education Association News

Asset for any Art Educator
By CharliesMom
I am a high school art teacher and love this book! There are many great ideas for all ages, and even the ones for younger ages can be easily adapted for older students. I am a huge fan of collaborative projects and this book helped me introduce collaboration to students who were not accustomed to the concept.
