The original case-study
By A. Carpenter
This is considered the first field case-study ever done in the field of Anthropology. With that being said, I do not know if you can criticize the first of it's kind. I personally found it too old to be enjoyable and would only read it again if I had to for a class.
Only get this if you are REALLY interested in the origins of anthropology-Otherwise skip it.

Tour de force of classical ethnography
By kaioatey
This is a classical piece from one of the fathers of modern anthropology. It still reads at it presumably did when it was first published in 1928 - fascinating & hard-to-put down. Malinowski is a master of the narrative, teaching us about Trobriander culture (off of the coast of Papua New Guinea) by telling stories about people who are very much like us - men and women who love, hate, appreciate hard work, beautiful bodies, integrity and honorable behavior. However, the live(d) in a different culture which created a set of expectations and taboos that can feel alien to the Westerner (although, to his credit, and despite the unfortunate title, Malinowski). "The European observer", says M, "soon finds that his standard of personal charm does not essentially differ from that of the natives" (P. 286).

What struck me right away was a sense that the Trobriander culture is (was) in many - MANY - ways healthier from ours. The affection and respect for children, the natural manner in which adolescent boys and girls explore sexuality and finally choose their marriage partner, the affection and friendship that typically continue throughout the marriage seem like a natural, perhaps even obvious, solution to the human predicament. Which paradoxically also includes the relatively straightforward dissolution of the relationship that does not involve social opprobrium. On the other hand, of course, is the complexity of social stratification, taboos, clans, definition of fatherhood, and lest we forget - magic, which is handed down across the patrilineal and matrilineal lines... that define a native culture that still has not been captured by the 'civilization'.

We learn about Trobriander concepts of beauty: Papuans are ugly (too black); so are Europeans (too white) - with nose "sharp like an axe blade", thin lips, big eyes "like water puddles", white skin with spots like those of an albino", straight hair "coming round the heads of women like threads of 'im' " . M was often assuaged with compassion that "he looked much more like a Melanesian than like an ordinary white man" :) We learn about their understanding of sexual anatomy, which in some ways was not that dissimilar from that of ancient Greeks. Thus, the eyes are the seat of lust and desire, carrying them to the brain through tendrils (nerves) from where desire spreads across the body to the belly and the kidneys, and ultimately to the male/female organs. Fascinating details about erotic games, the sexual act (biting off the eyelashes is an ultimate aphrodisiac) and concepts of beauty; to be attractive, teeth must be blackened with a mangrove root; eyebrows must be shaved off.

There are fascinating and detailed descriptions of T cosmology, reincarnation beliefs (spirit babies waiting to be born), views of other cultures. And so much more. It has to be mentioned that M, to his credit, is very critical of colonial administrators and (especially) missionaries who were doing their utmost to destroy the native beliefs and thus their culture. Even in a decade, he could observe a change for worse. The impulse in monotheist religions to proselytize and force others into their insane cult is, from the anthropologist's perspective, reprehensible. We are slow learners, if the tragic circumstances of Native Americans, Tibetans and Christians in the Middle East today are anything to go by. But I believe we ARE learning, and ethnographers such as Malinowski have paved our way.

Great pictures and text
By A Customer
"The Sexual Life of Savages in ...Melanesia" is a book along the lines of Margaret Mead's 'Coming of Age in Samoa'. But Malinowski concentrates on the sex life alone. Of course, in the modern world, the sexual life of Western society may rival those of Melanesians, but the freedom of young unmarried people to enjoy sex without social disapproval was not common when Malinowski wrote the book. One of the strangest things in the book was that the Melanesians did not connect sex with pregnancy, according to the author. I wonder if they were just taking him for a ride. The pictures are great. B&W, but so real, with grass skirts and bare bosoms.
