Reporting the Cuban Revolution: How Castro Manipulated American Journalists (Media and Public Affairs), by Leonard Ray Teel

Reporting the Cuban Revolution reveals the untold story of thirteen American journalists in Cuba whose stories about Fidel Castro's revolution changed the way Americans viewed the conflict and altered U.S. foreign policy in Castro's favor.

Between 1956 and 1959, the thirteen correspondents worked underground in Cuba, evading the repressive censorship of Fulgencio Batista's dictatorship in order to report on the rebellion led by Fidel Castro. The journalists' stories appeared in major newspapers and magazines and on national television and radio, influencing Congress to abruptly cut off shipments of arms to Batista in 1958. Castro was so appreciative of the journalists' efforts to publicize his rebellion that on his first visit to the United States as premier of Cuba, he invited the reporters to a private reception at the Cuban Embassy in Washington, where he presented them with engraved gold medals. While the medals revealed Castro's perception of the correspondents as like-minded partisans, the journalists themselves had no such intentions. Some had journeyed to Cuba in pursuit of scoops that could rejuvenate or jump-start their careers; others sought to promote press freedom in Latin America; still others were simply carrying out assignments from their editors. Bringing to light the disparate motives and experiences of the thirteen journalists who reported on this crucial period in Cuba's history, Reporting the Cuban Revolution is both a masterwork of narrative nonfiction and a deft analysis of the tension between propaganda and objectivity in the work of American foreign correspondents.

Not as groundbreaking as advertised
By R. L. Huff
The travails of US journalists covering the Cuban rebel underground of the 1950s is actually a well-worn track through the historical jungle, although credit is due to author Teel for assembling their experiences between one set of covers. Herbert Matthews in particular was skewered in Anthony DePalma's "The Man Who Invented Fidel." My primary criticism, though, is that the collage of reminiscence and reportage presented here does not really substantiate its subtitle. Do American journalists *really* follow their ethics of objectivity strictly in any event? Fidel Castro is certainly not the only case, before or after 1959, of partisan journalism served in the American media.

Over and again Teel quotes Walter Lippmann's analogy of the Russian Revolution, that "men saw not what was, but what they wished to see." Yet Cuba in the 1950s was a very different place from early Bolshevik Russia. For what exactly *did* these US journalists *really* see? A small group of bearded young men, in dirty army fatigues, clutching a motley assortment of weapons in remote jungle camps with a price on their heads. The journalists who searched them out saw no giveaway clues as to what these rebels would do with power because, frankly, there were none to see. When Castro spouted the phraseology of democracy, elections, etc., one was virtually forced to take him at his word because there was as yet no track record of judgment. What *was* visible was the pervasive and corrupt brutality of Batista's military-security regime: like nearly all Latin American strongmen of the time touting it was really he defending freedom and democracy. As US officials - who should have known better - let that deceit slide in the name of cold war expediency, the hypocrisy increasingly chapped those journalists covering "the Cuban story" and rightly so.

Teel implies that even so it was such veteran reporters who should have shown clairvoyance. But again, *how* so? Not even Castro could have guessed at the complete collapse of the Batista regime in December of 1958. He blew like a whirlwind into a vacuum, and was as dazzled by it as his public. In Herbert Matthews' own 1970 followup biography, "Fidel Castro," he quotes Fidel's secretary/BF Celia Sanchez on p. 112: "We could not know during that [Sierra] period that when victory came we and the 26th of July Movement would be so strong and so popular. We thought we would have to form a government with Autenticos, Ortodoxos, and so forth. Instead we found that we could be the masters of Cuba. That [in 1959] was when we began to put policies into effect that we had always had in mind but thought would have to be postponed. There was no need to lose any time."

In other words, Castro behaved like any other astute politician and didn't play his full hand; but rather fed the media what was best for his "candidacy." His future course in 1958 was in truth as unknown to him as to the reporters who followed his story at great personal risk. That more of these "lucky thirteen" broke with the revolution than embraced it in subsequent years shows that their alleged "deception" was short-lived. Teel offers a good summary of the experiences of these veteran correspondents covering the hottest Latin American scoop of the decade. But he does not actually prove that Castro truly tricked, deceived, or blindsided them before January 1, 1959, any more than El Lider Maximo was then deceiving himself. If men are kept warm on cold nights more by fires within, one can understand how those who shared their cold also took a little warmth from their camp.

By James A. Taylor
Superbly researched and eminently readable, "Reporting the Cuban Revolution" is a timely exposition of how the best and sometimes worst intentions of thirteen American journalists reporting on the Cuban Revolution of 1957/58 were subverted by Fidel Castro. The book is a profound study of reporting Castro's revolution as not what was, but what one wished to see.

Leonard Teel has discovered a brilliant new niche in his book
By Amazon Customer
Despite all that has been written about the Cuban revolution of the 1950s, Leonard Teel has discovered a brilliant new niche in his book, which is both a great adventure story and an object lesson in how the media sometime go about setting the agenda in foreign news. His story of thirteen U.S. correspondents for newspapers, magazines, television, and radio, who struggled in Cuba to tell the heroic tale of Fidel Castro and his revolutionaries, is mesmerizing. Using the research strengths of an accomplished historian and the writing skill of a reporter, which he once was, he has produced a highly readable and informative history that anyone interested in the press and foreign correspondence should read.
Patrick S. Washburn, professor emeritus and former president of the American Journalism Historians Association

The Guide Signs: Book One and Book Two, by Jay Wright

In The Guide Signs, acclaimed poet Jay Wright closes a movement he opened with his first book, The Homecoming Singer, in 1971, a movement that takes its design from the ancient people of Mali. Wright continued this theme in subsequent works, all gathered in Transfigurations: Collected Poems, whose eight books represent the eight master signs. The two books of The Guide Signs represent the primordial Nommo twins. All together, these ten books, as the ten earlier signs taken from the complete signs of the world, provide the base for the soul and life force given to everything. Wright encourages the reader to participate in weaving the fragile and fragmentary fabric of experience, and to do what Horace Silver encourages his listeners to do?get down in the music with us.

From Publishers Weekly
Often exhilarating but at times exasperatingly abstruse, Wright's second book this year (Music's Mask and Measure appeared earlier) exhibits a free-flowing, semi-improvisational energy focused and intensified by carefully constructed lines and stanzas. Whether scaling to Parnassian heights (I am one of those who feels/ an unsuspected subversion, and go/ caroling my rude ambition/ among the stars) or plunging inward to insight (I know strife as the foundation of becoming,/ and melancholy as the soul's creative impulse), the poems' impeccable musicality and craftsmanship will win the trust and admiration of many. When Wright ventures deepest into his cosmological lather, however, even the most intrepid hermeneut will be left head-scratching: We have found/ the dark nebula; we will speak/ the Jewel Box,/ or the Almond. Like much of Wright's work, these poems draw heavily on the creation myths of the Dogon people of Mali, West Africa, but in their great commodiousness they find room for passages of French, Italian and Spanish, as well as references to figures as diverse as Parmenides, Egyptian-Jewish writer Edmond Jabès, and jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins. Richly celebrated by the academy, Wright still deserves a broader readership.

A fascinating contrast with the usual alarmist fare about women
By ginmar
Usually, when people write about the crimes that women commit, it's a complicated dance of omission and deception. A recent article in Newsweek magazine illustrated this approach: arrests of violent girls were up 125%, it said. The article never gave the raw number for arrests, however, nor did it define the circumstanes of those arrests, or place them in context. Most critically, it did not place those arrests up against the figures for male violence. Women commit approximately ten to fifteen percent of all violent crimes, yet in fact they are subject to an almost all-male law enforcement and judicial system which is inhabited by conservative males who judge them harshly. Jones explores the context for these judgements, and points out that women are routinely judged twice: as criminals, and then as that mythical creature, Woman, who's sugar and spice if s he knows what's good for her. Thus, while men kill their children to get revenge on escaped spouses, women tend to kill in self defense or because of mental illness. The merciless response to Andrea Yates---rendered psychotic by too much childbearing, too much stress, and the indifference of her breeder-mad fundie hubbbie, is prefigured in this book by the case of the Irish epilectic maid who killed her mistress clumsily while in the midst of an attack and received no mercy whatsoever.

Similarly, in the chapter dealing with despoiled maidens, the author makes the critical point that by letting some women get away with murdering men who had 'seduced' and abandoned them, society was upholding the status quo. Women did not have the vote and yet were punished by the very people who held them powerless and wanted to keep them that way. By letting a few appropriately remorseful women off the hook, society could solve one woman's problem and ignore all the rest.

Jones analyzes society's views of women and crime and weaves the analysis through a fascinating string of historical cases. Amongst the startling facts she reveals are that infanticide cases have remained more or less constant, as a percentage, since the 1700s, when draconian laws essentially removed women's right agaisnt self incrimination. If a woman bore a bastard child, she could be fined and whipped. However, if she was an indentured servant and bore a bastard child, her owner could recieve another SEVEN years of servitude from her and sell the child as well. So many employers profited by raping and impregnating their female servants that the law was changed, but nothing really stopped men from raping women. With heavy penalties for bearing bastards, women resorted to concealing pregnancies, delivering in secret, and then killing the babies. Then a law was passed, making it a capital crime to conceal the birth of such a child. She was dmaned if she did, and damned if she didn't---and it didn't matter if she was a rape victim or not. In some cases, girls were so ignorant of the facts of reproduction that they were effectively defenseless. So much for abstinence only. (There was a case, for example, of a grand daughter of Queen Victoria who was kept so ignorant about her own body that she was impregnated by a foot man who tricked her into having sex. Then, hypocritcally, her family threw her out into the street.)

In any event, the book takes apart the standard cliches that dominate the writing about women's crime, and leaves one with the important realization that one should be exceedingly cautious when confronted with a book that uses percentages in the case of raw numbers. As an example of this, consider this: my hometown had one murder one year, then two the next. What percentage increase is that?

In Memory of Sharon "Peachie" Wiggins.
By E. Melchiondo
Women continue to be denied and discriminated against receiving equal justice. Women who do so called "male" crimes lack the support and compassion that they deserve. Women are too often denied commutation in Pennsylvania. Peachie Wiggins, died on March 24, 2013. She died having applied for commutation 12 times and on the potential cusp of freedom as her mandatory life sentence as a juvenile was abolished by the SCOTUS. She served 2.5 years on death row as a teenager. Women serve their time differently than men. Their time is deemed inconsequential and therefore less deserving than men. Mercy, is simply what they deserve.

Women Who Kill
By Paul Millar
This book is a fascinating study of female killers. While the author makes several empirically false statements about female crime (for example, "women get heavier sentences than men", p. 9) she does provide us with an entertaining selection of crime and punishment involving women murderers. From brutal serial killers like Belle Gunness, whose crimes "speak powerfully to the vengeful, man-hating part of every woman" (p.138) to the stories of battered women who kill, Jones offers up a feast of delciously detailed murder in all its glory. Jones illustrates how race and class as well as gender affect how we view crime. This book shows how society's view of women has affected both the prosecution and sentencing of women who kill.

William Lloyd Garrison and Giuseppe Mazzini: Abolition, Democracy, and Radical Reform (Conflicting Worlds: New Dimensions of the American C

William Lloyd Garrison and Giuseppe Mazzini, two of the foremost radicals of the nineteenth century, lived during a time of profound economic, social, and political transformation in America and Europe. Both born in 1805, but into dissimilar family backgrounds, the American Garrison and Italian Mazzini led entirely different lives -- one as a citizen of a democratic republic, the other as an exile proscribed by most European monarchies. Using a comparative analysis, Enrico Dal Lago suggests that Garrison and Mazzini nonetheless represent a connection between the egalitarian ideologies of American abolitionism and Italian democratic nationalism.

Focusing on Garrison's and Mazzini's activities and transnational links within their own milieus and in the wider international arena, Dal Lago shows why two nineteenth-century progressives and revolutionaries considered liberation from enslavement and liberation from national oppression as two sides of the same coin. At different points in their lives, both Garrison and Mazzini demonstrated this belief by concurrently supporting the abolition of slavery in the United States and the national revolutions in Italy. The two meetings Garrison and Mazzini had, in 1846 and in 1867, served to reinforce their sense that they somehow worked together toward the achievement of liberty not just in the United States and Italy, but also in the Atlantic and Euro-American world as a whole. In the end, the abolition of American slavery led to Garrison's consecration, while the new Italian kingdom forced Mazzini into exile. Despite these different outcomes, Garrison and Mazzini both attracted legions of devoted followers who believed these men personified the radical causes of the nations to which they belonged.

The politics of secession in antebellum Alabama
By Sandra Parke Topolski
For those wishing to understand how the choice to secede came about in a state where elitist planters did not dominate the political process (as in South Carolina) this is an excellent book. Thornton clearly shows that secession was a product of populist Jacksonian democracy in Alabama, providing an alternative to the view that only slaveholders supported disunion. Alabama's politics were marked from the beginning by class conflict between the yeomanry and planter class, and politicians learned early to exploit these tensions for political gain. Parties fought to outdo each other in labeling the other side as "elitist" aristocrats who would subvert the rights of freemen for their own selfish interests. This line of argument set the stage for the development of state's rights theory in Alabama, as promoters of internal improvements, banks, and social reform were often portrayed as elitist cabals. However, state's rights arguments were often little more than sophisticated versions of the election demagoguery that characterized debate over all the state's political issues.
Lack of policy-making expertise and the necessity of courting public approval often led the state's legislators to enact laws that hurt Alabama's long-term development. Forged in the Jacksonian era however, the electorate did not accept the Jeffersonian ideal of deferring to their betters in matters of policy, and regularly removed legislators who did not hew to the voters' instructions. Prior to the 1850s, most Alabama voters were not directly involved with the market economy, and were thus less likely to be affected by national economic and political policies, as well as less aware of the character of Northern opinion regarding slavery. Secessionist fire-eaters therefore enjoyed little support during the nullification and secession of 1850 crises, but their arguments gained respect during the 1850s as phenomenal economic growth drew more people into the market and its attendent insecurities, as well as making them more aware of the power of the federal government and the strength of the abolitionists.
Prosperous times and the marginalization of the Whig Party decreased the number of significant issues of disagreement among Alabama's politicians, leaving them in search of an issue to demagogue for political gain. The fight over Kanasas allowed them to portray northerners as elitists who would deny southern men of their rights and reduce them to the status of slaves. Such an argument gained creedence even among non-slaveholders because of the state's long populistic rhetorical tradition, which had convinced the yeomanry that elitist villains seeking to reduce their rights were always afoot, and could be defeated only by political supermen fighting for the rights and values of the electorate.
The southern rights argument clearly resonated among the yeomanry, particularly among those most affected by new economic uncertainties. In both the Presidential election of 1860 and the subsequent election of delegates to the state's secession convention, voters overwhelmingly chose candidates who supported secession or who would do so as long as Alabama would be joined in secession by other states. While Thornton's argument could be more thoroughly reinforced by exploring social factors that led the yeomanry to support secession, his argument for a hyper-democratic political tradition abetted by demagoguery and voter ignorance as a cause of Alabama's decision to quit the Union is quite persuasive.

Blacks, Carpetbaggers, and Scalawags: The Constitutional Conventions of Radical Reconstruction, by Richard L. Hume, Jerry B. Gough

After the Civil War, Congress required ten former Confederate states to rewrite their constitutions before they could be readmitted to the Union. An electorate composed of newly enfranchised former slaves, native southern whites (minus significant numbers of disenfranchised former Confederate officials), and a small contingent of "carpetbaggers," or outside whites, sent delegates to ten constitutional conventions. Derogatorily labeled "black and tan" by their detractors, these assemblies wrote constitutions and submitted them to Congress and to the voters in their respective states for approval. Blacks, Carpetbaggers, and Scalawags offers a quantitative study of these decisive but little-understood assemblies -- the first elected bodies in the United States to include a significant number of blacks.

Richard L. Hume and Jerry B. Gough scoured manuscript census returns to determine the age, occupation, property holdings, literacy, and slaveholdings of 839 of the conventions' 1,018 delegates. Carefully analyzing convention voting records on certain issues -- including race, suffrage, and government structure -- they correlate delegates' voting patterns with their racial and socioeconomic status. The authors then assign a "Republican support score" to each delegate who voted often enough to count, establishing the degree to which each delegate adhered to the Republican leaders' program at his convention. Using these scores, they divide the delegates into three groups -- radicals, swing voters, and conservatives -- and incorporate their quantitative findings into the narrative histories of each convention, providing, for the first time, a detailed analysis of these long-overlooked assemblies.

Hume and Gough's comprehensive study offers an objective look at the accomplishments and shortcomings of the conventions and humanizes the delegates who have until now been understood largely as stereotypes. Blacks, Carpetbaggers, and Scalawags provides an essential reference guide for anyone seeking a better understanding of the Reconstruction era.

Study in Contradictions
By Kevin Killian
Oh what a book! While looking into Valerie Raleigh Yow's recent biography of writer Betty Smith I paused when I saw she had written a book about a writer I had never heard of. And we scholarly types like to think we've at least heard of everybody! Just goes to show you pride come before a fall. Now that I've read "A Good Life was Writing," I can understand how she, Bernice Kelly Harris, slipped into the cracks of memory approximately 60 years ago, when Doubleday stopped publishing her intricately plotted novels of regional life in midcentury North Carolina. As Raleigh Yow paints her, her life seems almost unbearably sad, at least its second half. I don't want to spoil any surprises, but basically she married a wealthy man and lived above her station for decades, and when he died she found herself financially strapped by a byzantine Carolina system of inheritance which left her high and dry in a crumbling mansion and her Southern pride to complete the destruction. At just about this same moment, she stopped writing publishable work, though Raleigh Yow is sort of ambivalent on this point. She had a duplicitous or lazy agent, Diarmuid Russell, the same man who made a sort of tin saint of genius out of Eudora Welty, but did nothing, worse than nothing, for Mrs. Harris, just let her rot on the vine.

Despite this, apparently she continued to write two lengthy novels, one of which Russell lost, and in the 1950s took to making three act plays out of her 40s novels, which Raleigh Yow seems to think shows a drying up of inspiration. In her private life she was often depressed, and no wonder, though as we see she became the beloved elder statesman of a large group of local North Carolina writers who adored her, both male and female. In her sixties she was still capable of raunchy comebacks when some of the drinking got out of hand and some of the men lost their clothes--fun! I liked her a lot, until the biographer, in the service of truth and social justice, draws back the curtain on Mrs. Harris's sometimes astoundingly ugly remarks about keeping Negroes in their place during the Civil Rights crunch. It was so odd, because we had a picture of this writer being attuned to the inner and outer needs of other races, and all of a sudden she's like a George Wallace of the literary arts.

Nevertheless I came away thankful that this book was written and published. I don't actually think I will read any of these novels, since the excerpts are all written in a bizarre style hard to describe, but a good example would be the subtitle of the book, "A Good Life Was Writing." I read the whole thing and still can't figure out the syntax of that thought.

Bernice Kelly Harris, A Good Life Was Writing
By William N. Davis II
A young teacher from Wake County graduates from Meredith College, moves to rural Northampton County to teach, and ends up marrying one of the area's richest farmers. The stuff dreams are made of? In Bernice Kelly's case, hardly.

Enter the world of a small town that could be most any small town, a world of have's and have not's, chauvinism and silent suffering, of greed and envy, a society where black and white are essentially and intricately interwoven into a tapestry artfully, intimately, and honestly rendered by Valerie R. Yow. Bernice Kelly Harris, A Good Life Was Writing, is so much more than the compelling biography of a gifted writer who integrates the inhabitants of the world around her into her art. Yow's work also stands as a classic social study of the not so distant South, warts and all.

It is in this South that Bernice Kelly Harris' first novel wins her North Carolina's coveted Mayflower Cup, the first work of fiction, with her being the first woman, to be awarded. Despite the fact Harris authors more novels, plays, and stories, appreciation for her work, this day, seems relegated to scholarly circles. Hopefully Ms. Yow's work will return Bernice Kelly Harris to the recognition she rightly deserves.

Bernice Kelly Harris: A Good Life Was Writing
By Georgann Eubanks
Bernice Kelly Harris might have been known as the Eudora Welty of North Carolina, but she hid her literary light under a bushel. Fortunately for us, Valerie Yow brings the life of Ms. Harris to light in this comprehensive and compassionate biography. Harris was a novelist, playwright, and teacher. Many of her students are still living, but her books are out of print. It's a literary tragedy that unfolds like a novel in Yow's able hands.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-KIn this companion to All Kinds of Families (Albert Whitman, 1976), Simon shows that while there are many differences among people and cultures, all children have the same needs and desires. They all require food and clothing, they all like to play and listen to stories, and they all want to be loved. The simple text, enhanced by Patersons large, clear watercolor-and-pencil cartoons, imparts the message in an age-appropriate manner. Large enough for group sharing, the detailed pictures also beg poring over. Questions embedded in the text (What work do you do? What is your favorite story?) involve young listeners, allowing them input and providing an opportunity for personal comparisons. Inclusion of children from a number of ethnic groups helps enhance a sense of identification. Engaging and positive, the theme of self-recognition within diversity is neatly delivered.Ann Welton, Terminal Park Elementary School, Auburn, WA

My 18-month-old wants to read this book as many times a day as we will put up with. He is obsessed with belly buttons now! He wants to see his, and then mama, daddy, kitty cat, teddy bear... it's a really sweet book highlighting how everyone is linked even if we all have differences, too.

Great for those New to Reform Judaism
By Bobbi Jo Miller
My Rabbi required this book for his conversion students, and I found it to be the most informative, concise book about our fundamental beliefs concerning birth, death, marriage, holidays, and other major events. This book gives a broad view of the fundamental tenents of Reform without being oversimplified. It delves into the ethical considerations of major life occurences, and often contrasts Reform practice with Orthodox, explaining the difference between the two. I highly recommend it to anyone converting to Reform Judaism, or anyone searching for the 'how' and 'why' of the faith.

Very informative
By Eric S.
This was an interesting book. For anyone who wants to get an understanding between the Reform and orthodox movements, it is recommended. It wasn't anything spectacular, but it gives a very good outline of the beliefs of Reform Judaism as opposed to Orthodox Judaism without being judgmental in any way.
