A legendary editor at The New Yorker during its first thirty-four years, Katharine S. White was also a great garden enthusiast. In March 1958 she began publishing her popular column, "Onward and Upward in the Garden." Her first column elicited loads of fan mail, but one letter in particular caught her attention. From Elizabeth Lawrence, a noted southern garden writer, it was filled with suggestions and encouragement. When Katharine wrote back her appreciation, she reported on her Maine garden and discussed the plants and books that interested her. Thus began a correspondence that would last for almost twenty years, until Katharine's death in 1977.

Two Gardeners is a collection of these luminous letters, edited and introduced by Emily Herring Wilson. The letters bring to life the unique epistolary friendship between two intelligent women, the "formidable" Mrs. White and the "shy" Miss Lawrence, both avid gardeners and readers, both at a stage of life when to make a new friend was rare indeed: when they first wrote to one another, Katharine was sixty-two, Elizabeth, fifty-four.

More than 150 letters went back and forth during the course of their correspondence, though Katharine and Elizabeth would meet face-to-face only once. Whether talking about gardens or books, friends or family, each held a special place in the other's life.

In 1958 White, wife of the essayist E.B. White, published the first of many horticultural articles in the New Yorker, where she had been an editor for years. It was a critique of the catalogues from which she ordered seeds, bulbs and plants for the gardens around her house in North Brooklin, Maine. It prompted Lawrence, a noted garden writer in Charlotte, N.C., to send a fan letter recommending other catalogues for the author to look into. White gratefully wrote back, and thus began a friendship by mail that lasted until White's death in 1977. Because White often asked for advice about books, catalogues and plants, there is a good deal of gardening information in these 160 letters. Mutual encouragement is a major theme. White praises Lawrence's books, Southern Gardening and The Little Bulb Book, and in her last letter claims to have learned almost everything she knows about horticulture from Lawrence. Though somewhat in awe of the older, more famous woman, Lawrence doesn't hesitate to act as her teacher. Mixed in are accounts of their daily lives, bits of family history and news of Lawrence's aged mother and White's grandchildren. These graceful letters by two women well-known in the gardening world are a joy to read. The book is nicely assembled by Wilson (Hope and Dignity: Older Black Women of the South), whose footnotes are informative but unobtrusive. Photos.

Trip down memory lane...via the garden path

The TWO GARDENERS in question are Katherine White of New Yorker fame and Elizabeth Lawrence who wrote a garden column for years for the Charlotte Observer in North Carolina. White's columns on gardening written for the New Yorker magazine were compiled by her husband E. B. White (CHARLOTTE'S WEB, STUART LITTLE) and published after her death in 1977 in the book entitled ONWARD AND UPWARD IN THE GARDEN. Lawrence wrote a number of books, including THROUGH THE GARDEN GATE and THE LITTLE BULBS. Her book THE MARKET BULLETINS was completed by the New Jersey gardener Alan Lacy. The market bulletins were wonderful publications farm women in the South used to communicate information about seeds, plants, animals, receipts (what they called recipes), and other items they for sale or being sought. Elizabeth shared a good deal of information about the market bulletins which were not published north of Virginia with Katherine whose one interests lay with garden catalogues when their friendship began.
Lawrence and White corresponded for several decades. The two women discussed their gardens, their columns, their books, and their lives. In the early part of their correspondence, they often wrote each other by return mail. Toward the end of Katherine's life, the letters were few and far between as illness began to affect her movement and ability to see. In spite of their suffering, they continued to observe the world around them and relay how things were going in the garden-the latest blooms, the ravenous mice, the unexpected cold snap, the new greenhouse. Their words remind me of the hope and comfort women have long experienced when a letter from a loved one arrives. As my 87-year old aunt with whom I still correspond says, it doesn't matter what you write, the smallest thing matters.
The editor of this collection of letters Emily Wilson, quotes a librarian who remarked after having read the letters Elizabeth and Katherine wrote to each other, "I got a feeling of moral interdependence on a creative level. Somehow I had viewed the creativity of successful people as a strong force that perhaps needed channeling but not encouragement. Now, on this new-to-me-plane, I see again that no man is an island."

I was enthralled and deeply moved by this book. Enthralled, because reading their letters was akin to reading modern day garden blogs. I was deeply moved by their deaths because I felt by the end of the book that I knew them.

Their letters also brought back a lot of memories for me. My maternal grandmother was a few years older than Katharine White. Unlike many women of her time, she married late in life and had my mother when she was close to 40. When I knew her, she had retired and was living in an apartment. I loved accompanying her when she went "visiting". Part of those visits involved tours of her friends' gardens. Gardens that looked very much like the photos and descriptions of Katharine's and Elizabeth's gardens. Their letters sounded eerily like the conversations during those visits.

The descriptions of the flower shows made me laugh! I remember shows like those derided in their letters. My poor mother tried and tried to learn flower arranging. Books, classes, garden club lectures, nothing helped. She finally settled on just entering specimen plants and flowers. I should add that she won several prizes in local shows. And that I inherited her inability to arrange flowers in an attractive manner.

About the Author
Steven Hawley is an environmental journalist whose work has appeared in High Country News, National Fisherman, OnEarth, and Missoula Independent. He lives with his family along the Columbia River.

In the tumultuous summer of 1968, Ed Chaney was witness to a slaughter. Three hundred thousand dead salmon and steelhead were rotting downstream of the just-completed John Day Dam, thirty miles upriver from The Dalles, Oregon, some of the carcasses laid in so thick they looked to him like someone had stacked them like windrows on the beaches. Two years earlier, the Oregon Fish Commission (later the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission) had hired Chaney, a rookie fisheries specialist, to work out of its Portland office, where one of his tasks was to report on fish passage issues on the Columbia, including work at the new dams.
 
“I was chewed up and spit out,” Chaney told me. “They had designed that dam to waste as little water as possible on anything other than power production. The entrance to the fish ladder was not accessible for fish. So the Corps agreed to install pumps to move about a foot of water so the fish could find the entrance. Well, the pumps were ordered but delivery was delayed. But the vice president [Hubert Humphrey] was scheduled to come out and dedicate the dam. The Corps sent us a letter that said, in effect, we’re closing the dam anyway.”
 
When the Corps did so, without the requisite pumps, or even turbines in some of the bays at the powerhouse, the massive waterfall created below the dam caused a phenomenon known as nitrogen supersaturation, the piscine equivalent of what deep-sea divers call the bends. The Corps hoped mightily that no one would notice. “At first, the Corps of Engineers wouldn’t even allow state biologists onto the dam. Here I am, this kid from Missouri, wondering what’s going on here?” recollected Chaney. The Corps, he soon realized, was engineering a cover-up. “The Oregonian came out and interviewed me, and I told them what I saw,” he went on. “It was a big story, and the next day on the front page, there’s the Corps’ district engineer bad-mouthing me, saying it didn’t happen this way, I was speaking out of turn, I didn’t know what I was talking about.” Chaney attempted to write a press release to clear his name of the accusations the Corps leveled at him, but his boss heavily edited several versions, telling Chaney he wanted to “preserve our good working relationship to the Corps.”
 
Frustrated by the censorship, Chaney surreptitiously took a camera and photographed some of the salmon carnage, then took two rolls of undeveloped film to the offices of the Oregonian. “I told their reporter: ‘I’ll give you these on one condition. You didn’t get them from me, and you don’t know who I am or where they came from,’” he explained. “They agreed. Well, I left, thinking, I’ve done all I can do. The next morning, I see another front-page article on the disaster. It says go to such and such a page for photos. So I go there, and there’s a full page of photos and a little box in the center of the page that says, ‘Photos courtesy of Ed Chaney.’ ” The Associated Press picked up the photos, which ran nationwide.
 
After a brief visit to the Oregon governor’s office, it became clear Chaney would have to move on. He became a fisheries consultant, working with tribes and conservationists to maintain and reestablish lost salmon runs, eventually focusing his efforts in Idaho, Eastern Washington, and Eastern Oregon. But in his most prominent role, he’s become something of a biopolitical activist, speaking out against the Corps and the BPA colorfully enough that 60 Minutes once came to interview him for a segment on the salmon crisis. More recently, he brokered a deal to put salmon back into the Umatilla River, which involved getting water back into a river that had been chronically sucked dry by farmers for nearly a century. “They fish for them right in downtown Pendleton sometimes now,” Chaney boasted. “One spot they call the Taco Bell Hole, which is where you park to get to the river.”
 
His acerbic wit is piqued by a lunch-hour discussion of a long-running BPA public relations campaign. Saving salmon, according to this plan, comes down to the “4 H’s”: habitat, hydro, hatcheries, and harvest. This strategy has been promoted with the same gleeful boosterism found in the bucolic projects of the national farm organization with the same 4-H acronym. Three of the four H’s, according to the BPA’s scheme, should receive the benefit of immediate reform. Habitat lost to logging, mining, agriculture, and development should be repaired. Hatcheries should operate on the frontiers of conservation biology but not sacrifice industrial efficiency. Harvesting should be cut back. Hydropower production, by contrast, should be maintained at current levels at virtually any cost.
 
It’s the hydrosystem’s version of parental tough love for its troubled dependents: plenty of love for the folks, tough luck for the kids. What hydrosystem defenders like to call their “spread the risk” philosophy is fraught with potential pitfalls for fish but contains quite tangible benefits for dams. Under the guise of this holistic-sounding approach to restoring salmon, solutions to the problems that dams alone have created for salmon can be neatly deflected onto tributaries, estuaries, the ocean, fishermen, global warming, or the host of salmon predators that hunt the river.
 
Chaney contends there is a fifth H.
 
Being a man of letters and not a scientist, I was intrigued by this idea, recollecting that some Indians who fished the falls at Celilo assigned a religious significance to the number five. Could the fifth H be a New-Age, anadromous Third Way, another iteration of the tao of physics, a corroboration of the impending harmonic convergence between science and ancient wisdom? The answer was revealed to me in church—the church that had been converted into a deli where we were having lunch. “The fifth H,” Chaney explained to me, a clergy-esque trace of genteel Missouri accent still evident between bites of sandwich, “is horseshit, since the BPA has always far understated the impact that dams have on salmon.”
 
Chaney may be angry as a cut snake, but he’s accurate as a scientist. According to recent numbers, gleaned from an interagency, decade-long endeavor dubbed the Comparative Survival Study, a very conservative estimate for current overall salmon mortality due to the hydrosystem in any given year would be half the population. A 1994 Ninth Circuit court decision assigned the blame attributable to dams for that overall decline at 80 percent. Chaney pointed out that all other stakeholders in the Columbia—from grubby gillnetters working the estuary in Cathlamet, Washington, to the spey-rod swinging yuppies in a riffle on the Clearwater, in Idaho—were left to fight among themselves for their share of the remainder. And that amid this squabbling, Chaney said, too little attention has been paid to a last-ditch salmon barging experiment the federal family has since upheld for three decades as a viable restoration plan.
 
In the mid-1970s, some horrible drought years beset the Pacific Northwest, steepening the alarming descent of Snake River salmon stock toward extinction just as the last four federal dams on that river were completed. The decision was made to gather juvenile salmon at the dams and barge or truck them downstream below the tailrace of Bonneville Dam. So it was that traveling Interstate 84 back then, one could witness a sign of ecological turmoil as surreal as the image of the Cuyahoga River on fire. Wheat, timber, and other commodities were being hauled up the river to the mountains of Idaho, while Idaho salmon swam in tanker trucks going the other way on the road. What began as a salvage operation, a dire action to prevent catastrophic mortality for fish, has morphed into the preferred plan for getting migrating salmon to the ocean. The day and a half ride on one of the Corps’ smolt barges, from the Snake River to the lower Columbia, the Corps claims, boosts juvenile survival to near 100 percent. Survival is measured by the number of fish that survive the boat ride. This is like claiming a cure for cancer by pointing out all the terminally ill patients who survived the van ride from hospice to the chemo ward. Survival of barged juvenile fish to returning adult is not much different than for fish that manage to stay in the river. Over the long haul, neither group has survived well enough to reverse their dwindling populations. “Barging is a clear sign that the river is too lethal for fish to swim in,” Chaney said. “Some scientists say they can calculate the benefits of barging. But the more deadly in-river conditions, the more benefit barging appears to have. The feds haven’t been barging endangered Idaho fish for thirty years. They’ve been barging for thirty years and it landed the fish on the endangered species list. Usually, results count. Not in this case.”

The Snake River Dams Have Outlived Their Uselessness

Hawley's love for the wild rivers of the northwest has sparked this courageous and detailed expose about the potential destruction of the Snake River ecosystem. He unravels the economic facade of dam creation while successfully linking the survival of wild salmon to our own existance as a culture and a species. His fascinating interviews reveal the heroes and villains in the battle of salmon science vs. salmon politics, of hydropower dollars vs. the ecology and tribal treaties of the Columbia Basin. Hawley tells a very important story with humor and wit. It is a must read for anyone who has ever longed to hear the music of a free river.

A river undamned?

I would have enjoyed this book if it weren't well-written. Its proposal--that many dammed rivers could responsibly and feasibly be unchained and allowed to run free--is dear to my heart. Hawley has also done an exceptional job researching his subject. I particularly appreciated his habit of interviewing stakeholders as people, not just advocates for this or that position. And I appreciated the way he navigates the intricacies of Western water and endangered salmon issues. His bias is obvious, and sometimes I didn't appreciate that. Other times his no-hedge anti-dam, pro-fish stance made me want to cheer. But what I enjoyed most were the tightly focused little gems of description and/or explanation scattered throughout the book. Hawley has a sharp eye and a sharper pen. Here are a few of my favorites:

"Eventually, the eggs, the color of an alpenglow evening and about the size of a coffee bean, will hatch, the egg sac still attached. They are now called alevin..."

"Wheat, timber, and other commodities were being hauled up the river to the mountains of Idaho, while Idaho salmon swam in tanker trucks going the other way..."

"They're capable, I believe, of asking and answering the pointed questions that never quite get addressed in courtrooms and boardrooms as the wealth of the river gets diverted elsewhere. What does the fisherman owe the farmer? What does the data center owe the small town? What do we owe the river?"

Horrible! But a good read.

A horrible story -but a great book. If you have any interest in West Coast salmon/steelhead, political graft, the Columbia River, and its dams based on WW2 era thinking, you need to put this book on your read list. Hawley did a great job researching this beast. Years ago I read Reed Burkholder's book on the economics of removing the lower Snake dams and have followed the politics of the issue ever since -this book is a great follow-up. There are several facts that I was not aware of involving fish/dams/politics and the people that Hawley brought out. READ it. -Tony Latham author of Trafficking, a Memoir of an Undercover Game Warden.

Solid Work of Native American, Religious and U.S. History

Do not pay attention to the other reviewer's (Lilley Fleming) unsubstantiated critique of the author's historical interpretation or writing ability. This solid monograph has been rightly praised by Charles Hudson, the American Historical Review, the Journal of American History, and Tony Hillerman (a guy who knows a lot about good writing).

As a result of intense European American encroachment on their lands (state of Georgia, Andy Jackson and local militias) and assimilationist (Christian missionaries, federal agents) pressures on their culture, some Muscogees (Creeks) initiated a prophetic religious revitalization ("Redstick") movement to regain power and shape the future according to their own beliefs.

Martin's scholarship is based on substantial research that accords with a long line of "post-contact religious resistance" by various Native communities in American Indian history (e.g., Pueblo Revolt (1680), Neolin - the Lenape (Delaware) prophet in Pontiac's Revolt (1763), the Seneca Handsome Lake and the Longhouse Religion (1799), Tecumseh and his brother the Shawnee Prophet(1811), and the various Ghost Dance movements (1870s and 1890s).

The only reason for the four-star rating is Martin's occassional lapses into academic jargon.

On September 15, 1924, Martha Lum and her older sister Berda were barred from attending middle school in Rosedale, Mississippi. The girls were Chinese American and considered by the school to be “colored”; the school was for whites. This event would lead to the first US Supreme Court case to challenge the constitutionality of racial segregation in Southern public schools, an astonishing thirty years before the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision.

Unearthing one of the greatest stories never told, journalist Adrienne Berard recounts how three unlikely heroes sought to shape a new South. A poor immigrant from southern China, Jeu Gong Lum came to America with the hope of a better future for his family. Unassuming yet boldly determined, his daughter Martha would inhabit that future and become the face of the fight to integrate schools. Earl Brewer, their lawyer and staunch ally, was once a millionaire and governor of Mississippi. When he took the family’s case, Brewer was both bankrupt and a political pariah—a man with nothing left to lose.

By confronting the “separate but equal” doctrine, the Lum family fought for the right to educate Chinese Americans in the white schools of the Jim Crow South. Using their groundbreaking lawsuit as a compass, Berard depicts the complicated condition of racial otherness in rural Southern society.

Adrienne Berard is an award-winning journalist and graduate of Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. She has been the Writer-in-Residence at Delta State University in Mississippi and now resides in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Wow I'm so happy to see my family's story being told

Wow I'm so happy to see my family's story being told. The very nice author contacted and visited us 2 years ago for pictures and details. My grandmother Martha used to sit and comb my hair while telling me about her childhood. I am very proud of my family and the strength they had. My family received no monetary payments, just the honor of having our story published. This court case the last I heard is used at Harvard for law students. Thank you to Adrian for capturing this and thank you to everyone who reads it.

A Must Read

This is one of those books that has introduced me to what seems to be a never-ending problem involving Mississippi. It tells the story of a family of Chinese immigrants that led the first fight to desegregate schools in the state of Mississippi. I am used to the story of the Blacks being involved but did not know of the Chinese problem until this book.

This is a short story of Jeu Gong Lum, Hang Toy Wong and their three children, Martha, Berda, and Briscoe. and the efforts they made to have a school for their children. A school along with whites rather than blacks.

The Supreme Court case, Gong Lum v. Rice was decided on Sept. 15, 1924, and was a racist decision for which the court has a number. It involved the Rosedale Consolidated High School. The lawyer was originally Earl Brewer and later was James Flowers. The court ruled that separate schools was ok and that the Chinese should go to the Black school.

The book is rather short, some 144 pages, and it leaves much to be desired. While there is mention of Chinese being admitted into the U. S. there is not much as to the conditions of the Lums as to their work or social standing. There is some mention but not too much. There is also much left out of the transfer of the case from Mr. Brewer to Mr. Flowers.

I think the book is a good start but much needs to be done to bring the situation into the open for the reader. You will see as you read it that much remains understated or not covered at all.

I urge readers to read this book even with its shortness and hopefully look for more on this subject. It has been nearly a century but the problem still exists. Somehow we need to put this behind us and move on in a hopeful manner. The author has at least tried to do her part.

Bigotry is a Social Disease

This excellent, albeit too short book is about the rampant racism in Mississippi involving an immigrant family from China. The
Lums were pioneers in challenging Jim Crow laws that upheld segregation. Jim Crow is generally associated with discriminatory practices against blacks, but Latinos and Asians also were the targets of cruelty, ostracism and racism. (You can't have ostRACISM without RACISM.)

Jeu Gong Lum, and Hang Toy Wong fought to have their children educated as their three children were barred from all schools due to race. They fought to create a school that would accept Martha, Berda and Briscoe, but did not want their children enrolled in a black school as they didn't feel their children would receive the same standard of education.

Gong Lum v. Rice, which predated the 1954 Brown v Board of Education by 30 years was the turning point in taking Jim Crow by the wings and plucking them. The court's decision which took place on Sept. 15, 1924 upheld Jim Crow laws. In the final count, the court maintained the "separate but equal" contradiction and found that the Asian children could attend a black school. inese should go to the Black school.

I loved the notes and the information and research that went into this book. I would like to have known more about the Lum family and the atrocious legal proceedings that ultimately led to the court's racist ruling. This book will pique readers' interest in Asian immigrants; Chinese history and the conditions in which Asian families lived in the United States during the early 20th century.
