Kindergarten-Grade 2-Relying on the popularity of the "Boxcar Children" chapter books, this series features the same characters, but is written in a toned-down, easy-reader style. This one tells the story of Sam, a two-year-old who visits the Boxcar household. The little boy tends to get into trouble, from spilling his cereal to locking himself in the bathroom. Sam's inability to use language correctly is overdone and becomes annoying, and the illustrations are average. A marginal purchase.

About the Author
Gertrude Chandler Warner was born in 1890 in Putnam, Connecticut, where she taught school and wrote The Boxcar Children because she had often imagined how delightful it would be to live in a caboose or freight car. Encouraged by its success, she went on to write eighteen more stories about the Alden Children.
Kay has illustrated more than fifteen books for children, including Muggie Maggie, for which Ms. Life received the Garden State Children's Book Award. She lives in Westfield, Massachusetts.

Great for Developing readers

These books are great stepping stones from short books to chapter books. Watch, the dog, makes the reader laugh.IF the child like the story, these stories give great background knowledge for the Boxcar Children chapter books. Reading this particular book can be tricky because Sam take is baby language, so just preteaching and having the adult read these parts helps.

My grandchildren love the "Boxcar Children" books. It is nice to have a reliable series of books that you can depend upon to entertain and create a desire in children to read books.

love this book both of my twins have read this book. sone loves these books ...bought 1-12 ....and just moved on to the boxcar set. He loves trains , this is perfect reading for my son.
