The Shine Poems, by Calvin Forbes

Shine is an African American folk character who emerged after World War I in toasts, blues, folk poetry, and children's rhymes. In his new book of poems, Calvin Forbes reinvents Shine, giving him a girlfriend, Glow, and a child, Shade. He renders the figure more melancholy and adds traces of the surreal and slapstick -- accessories "typical of the folk dibbling and dabbling as the tradition is passed along".

While only the last quarter of The Shine Poems concern Shine, all of the poems reflect a similar sensibility. They share the narrative threads of family relationships and personal and social history while they test the full possibilities of colloquial language and speech rhythms in verse. With its songs, blues, and quick, witty epigrams, The Shine Poems is a collection clear, firm, funny, and playful even as it takes that inevitable turn in the road to-ward the somber. Lyrical yet highly formalized -- "simplicity shacked up with complexity", as Forbes puts it -- these poems resemble the Jess B. Simple short stories of Langston Hughes and take inspiration from the Henry poems of John Berryman, the Jane poems of W. B. Yeats, and the poetry of Sterling Brown.

From School Library Journal
Grade 1–4—More than 100 years ago, in Louisiana, MO, the Stark brothers were searching for a new fantastic apple to sell. At the same time, hundreds of miles away in Clay County, WV, Anderson Mullins, inspecting his new farm, came across an amazing tree loaded with golden apples; he sent the Starks three of them. From these two events emerges the story of the discovery and successful marketing of the Golden Delicious apple. The narrative is simple and direct, with an occasional flair: "The sun poured down hot as apple butter just out of the kettle. His white shirt stuck to him tighter than the skin on a grape, but he didn't care." From the subtitle, readers might expect a deeper development of that reference to Cinderella, but after an initial comment by Lloyd Stark—"This just might be our Cinderella!"—it is not mentioned again. Kemly's soft pastel illustrations provide interesting historical details, including dress and transportation, and help to move the story along. An author's note gives more background, along with details about the grafting process. Resourceful teachers could easily find history and science connections to this story.—Lee Bock, Glenbrook Elementary School, Pulaski, WI

From Booklist
This lively, true tale is set in the American heartland more than 100 years ago. The Stark brothers dream of cultivating the perfect new apple in their Missouri nursery, and farmers send them floods of varieties to try, but even fruits that look like royalty do not taste good. Then a poor farmer in the hills of West Virginia finds a new tree with Golden Delicious apples in his field, and he sends the fruit to the Starks. At first the brothers are dismissive of the yellow apples until they taste them and find what they’ve been searching for. They rush by train and on horseback, find the tree, and graft twigs onto their own apple trees. Since then, Golden Delicious apples have become known as the queen of the apple world and billions have been harvested. A note fills in the botany, including how grafting works, and the folksy, colored-pencil illustrations, shaded with lots of earthy golds and greens, show the ordinary people who find glowing surprise. Grades 1-3. --Hazel Rochman

Lovely children's book
By Tamara A. Shaffer
This award-winning author has a brilliant way of taking ordinary things and making them magical for children (as in No Starry Nights, 1989). This book makes a Christmas gift that parents will love to keep and pass down to grandchildren.

Wonderful True Story, beautifully written
By Tamarleigh Lippegrenfell
This is a terrific book that I highly recommend to all. It is entertaining, approachable, inoffensive, and very well written. This is also a way to get kids to fall in love with fruit! A golden delicious apple has no multimillion dollar advertising campaigns the way the famous candy bars do, but this book inspires and touches the reader in ways that no commercial can approach.

Top notch! A great gift for any kid.

Great Value For Money
By A Customer
Having purchased Keith Kay's previous excellent books by Sterling on Optical Illusions. I was very excited to learn that he was bringing out a new book on the same subject. I immediately placed my order with .... The book has arrived and I must say I am very pleased with the quality of the book and it's contents - it is small sized, hard backed and will easily fit into the pocket. It contains a great assortment of varied illusions and visual oddities all beautifully done in full color. My children have been fascinated and entertained with
the collection contained in this book. It has been fun and at the same time educational and has kept them entertained and amused.
It is great value for money. I would highly recommend it.

Stations West: A Novel (Yellow Shoe Fiction), by Allison Amend

Oklahoma is a forgotten territory of "Indians, outlaws, and immigrants" when its first Jewish settler, Boggy Haurowitz, arrives in 1859. Full of expectations, he finds the untamed region a formidable foe, its landscape rugged, its resources strained.

In Stations West, four generations of Haurowitzes, intertwined with a family of Swedish immigrants, struggle against the Territory's "insatiable appetite." The challenges of creating a home amid betrayals, nature's vagaries, and burgeoning statehood prove too great. Each generation in turn succumbs to the overwhelming lure of the transcontinental railroad, and each returns home to find the landscape of their youth, like themselves, changed beyond recognition, their family utterly transformed.

Dramatic and lyrical, Allison Amend's first novel, steeped in the history and lore of the Oklahoma Territory, tells an unforgettable multigenerational -- and very American -- story of Jewish pioneers, their adopted family, and the challenges they face. Amid the founding of the West, Stations West's generations struggle to forge and maintain their identities as Jews, as immigrants, and as Americans.

From Publishers Weekly
Amend's debut novel (after the collection Things That Pass for Love) is the thin and grim multigenerational story of a pioneer family hacking its way through the frontier states, beginning with the 1880 marriage of Jewish-Cherokee dishwasher Moshe Haurowitz to pregnant Irish prostitute Alice O'Malley in Orerich, Colo. After Moshe abandons Alice and baby Garfield, he works for the railroad and later returns to fetch Garfield, father and son eventually settling in Denton Station, Okla., where they form a business partnership with a family of Swedes headed by Fritz and Rika. Garfield, now a hotheaded adolescent, falls in love with Fritz and Rika's pregnant daughter, Dora, and runs away to ride the rails, changing his name and staking his fortune in oil before settling down in the land of misfits and can't-get-alongs. Amend dashes through some 50 years and four generations, but the brisk pace shortchanges drama and character development—except for Garfield, who emerges as a shrewd and forceful personality—and leaves the reader feeling underwhelmed by what could be an immersive epic. Review
"...every page is a delight. Surprises await the reader at every turn..." --ForeWord Magazine, March 2010

"Allison Amend's Stations West is a wonder: a super-readable, super-smart debut novel that comes just when we need it most. It's the most vigorous, passionate, and enjoyable foray into America I've read in a long time--told in a voice caught up with the extraordinary act of recounting the whole story. You won't forget it." ----Darin Strauss, author of Chang and Eng

"Stations West is truly an American epic. It is the story of immigrants and natives, of the evolution of the land, of culture and of people, of attitudes and lifestyles, of belief, of family, of America itself. I know of no other piece of literature like it. Written in a style as starkly beautiful as the landscape of the Oklahoma territory it describes, Amend's prose is unflinching and unsentimental; it takes on difficult truths with wide-open eyes. I'm quite awed by the novel's tremendous reach and its generosity." ----Thisbe Nissen, author of Out of the Girls' Room and into the Night

"Allison Amend possesses the rare gift of being able to fully transport her readers to an uncharted land. Her version of nascent Oklahoma reshapes the mythology of the Old West, telling an enthralling family story that reveals the role of Jews in shaping the American frontier." ----Hannah Tinti, author of Animal Crackers and The Good Thief

"There are no other books like Stations West. It speaks to something new, a kind of Jewish Angle of Repose . . . Stegner mixed with Singer. It struck me throughout as beautifully written and this alone makes a serious contribution to literature. But novels should also plow new ground and this story certainly does this. Boggy and Moshe and Alice and Garfield are real to me--living and enduring a landscape that is as familiar to them as it is to anybody else out there. And this I appreciate." ----Peter Orner, author of Esther Stories

"What a lovely book. Allison Amend has just the right touch, and her people are alive on the page." ----Richard Bausch, author of These Extremes

Engaging storytelling
By Audra Martin
This book is super. It follows the story of Boggy Haurowitz--Oklahoma's first Jewish settler, back before Oklahoma was a state--and his descendants through the 1930s. Maybe you're not a regular reader of westerns or historical novels (I'm not), but if you give it a few pages you will be drawn in by Amend's compact, yet evocative writing. I was consistently amazed at the amount of history/emotions/complex relationships she was able to convey in the most economic way. Amend is an excellent storyteller (her book of short stories is also great); I recommend this book.

A compelling tale peopled by the flawed but engaging Haurowitz family
By Homer's Mom
Written in the present tense, Stations West by Allison Amend, tells a historical story of settlement in Oklahoma. Set in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the Oklahoma she describes is multicultural and populated with those who have nowhere else to go. The Haurowitz family is part Jew, part Native American and part Swede. A generational tale, protagonists leave Oklahoma only to return when life falters. Step by step material gains are made, but marriages flounder and personalities mutate. For me, the heart of the story can be found in the tale of Garfield, the third generation Haurowitz, whose childhood is marked by neglect and loss, and who never really finds happiness. His insecurities radiate, and stain the lives of those around him. Individuals struggle, but the family as a unit seems resilient and inevitable. Like Steinbeck, Allison Amend does not belabor the drama. Her language is plain spoken, leaving the reader to find his or her own emotional response to events as they unfold. I highly recommend this book. It is gripping and profound.

A sprawling saga of the multi generation of immigrants who settled Oklahoma
By Joyce Maggio
I loved Allison Amend's new novel,"Stations West," for its wonderfully developed characters. From Boggy Haurowitz, the first Jewish settler in the territory, to all his descendants, a multicultural family of Indian, Irish and Swedish backgrounds struggling to eke out a living in a new land. So carefully drawn, I felt as if i knew them all, and understood their restlessness, resentments, hopes and fears. Boggy, as well as others, runs away for a a time, to travel by rail, a formidable aspect of western expansion. The central characters are the bitter and angry Garfield, Moshe's recalcitrant son and Dora, the gentle woman who loves him always. The novel spans years of the development of the west, and the fortunes of the children and grandchildren of these pioneers grow and diminish; the members of this family are the history of the west in all its cruelty, promise of freedom and rich variety.

A brilliant man who was gone before he could be appreciated.
By Shawn Marchinek
Upton and the Army by Stephen E. Ambrose is an excellent biography of a truly remarkable man. Emory Upton came from a poor New England family yet attended West Point Military Academy. He graduated at the start of the Civil War and in 4 years was a Major General at the age of 26. He was a brilliant tactician and helped not only reform tactics of the Army but also toured the world's Armies, wrote a book about it and had served in all 3 main branches of the Army; Calvary, Artillery and Infantry by the age of 40. Unfortunately he suffered from extreme headache, a possible tumor, and felt he was a failure due to slow promotion and lack of recognition in the post Civil War Army. He ended his life while posted to command at the Presidio in California at the age of 42.

Emory Upton was not appreciated for his writings and recommendations during his lifetime but now he has earned the place as one of the Fathers of the amazing Army we now have in America. Mr. Ambrose states the facts and puts his life before us in this easy reading book. A great book for Civil War historians or those looking for a life of leadership.

Outstanding
By A Customer
As a student of the Civil War, I have read many books about the subject, and this one to me ranks as among the best.
Steven Ambrose is America's best historical biographer and proves it in this outstanding study of Emory Upton, a hero of the Civil War and a brilliant tactician who was the first to recognize the need for new army tactics brought about by the changing technology of the Civil War.
Ambrose covers Upton's full life story, his brilliant tactical evolutions of the War, and his struggle to modernize the Army manual of tactics.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book because it reveals a little known chapter of American Military history and the life of a figure who played a deep, and perhaps not fully appreciated role in it.
Perhaps the best line from the book is General Sherman's description of Emory Upton: "Thoughts are ephemeral, deeds substantial. To unite both requires genius."
The same can be said of Mr. Ambose's work.

At the Breast: Ideologies of Breastfeeding and Motherhood in the Contemporary United States, by Linda M. Blum

In our irnoic, "post-feminist" age, few things inspire passion. Breastfeeding is one of them. For advocates, breastfeeding is empowering, the only way to supply babies proper nutrition, and the "bond" that cements the mother/child relationship. It is also deemed "natural" in a world of genetically modified product and mal-dominated corporate health-care. But is it a realistic option for all women? And can a well-intentioned insistence on the necessity of breastfeeding become just another way for some women to feel they have failed as mothers?

Amazon.com Review
Nature and gender dynamics are often at cross-purposes, and it seems to be the fate of feminists in the last years of the 20th century to find themselves forever hostage in the uneasy negotiations between the two. University of New Hampshire sociologist Linda Blum's highly informative study of the cultural complexities behind the simple act of breast-feeding is yet another example of the many ways in which a contemporary woman's right to choose often finds itself in conflict with physiology's dictates.

In her previous book, Between Feminism and Labor, Blum explored the intersection between the feminist movement and the rise of unions through a series of case studies. She uses that technique to good effect here as well, interviewing white, middle-class La Leche League enthusiasts; blue-collar white women; and black, working-class mothers about their attitudes towards breast-feeding. The health benefits of breast milk for infants are almost universally acknowledged--but how realistic is it for all working women to nurse? What about those mothers who have a hard time making the transition between viewing their breasts as erogenous zones and seeing them as baby's buffet? There is even controversy about what exactly constitutes breast-feeding: are sucklings weaned at six weeks or infants fed breast-pumped milk through a bottle truly "breast" babies? Blum's analysis of such issues is respectful of the social and psychological imperatives that inform a woman's decision on whether or not to breast-feed. --Patrizia DiLucchio

From Library Journal
Breastfeeding is usually considered a part of child rearing and a method of providing nutrition; this book by a sociologist examines it from a different perspective. By studying the history of breastfeeding in the United States in the 20th century and interviewing women in various racial and socioeconomic groups, Blum offers a glimpse of the contradictions surrounding a physiological function. Nursing a baby gives a mother a chance to bond with her child, but it also relinquishes some of her control over her body, interferes with equality in the workplace, and transmits diseases such as HIV to infants. While white middle-class women feel that breastfeeding is part of motherhood, women of color see it as a reminder of slavery and an obstacle to independence. This book treats a fascinating subject, but the jargon-filled text makes it more suitable for academic libraries and women's studies collections. Scholars will appreciate the extensive bibliography. Public libraries are better served by more practical books such as Pamela Wiggins's Breastfeeding: A Mother's Gift (LJ 10/1/98).ABarbara M. Bibel, Oakland P.L., CA

From Kirkus Reviews
Relying on a descriptive, sociological approach, the author surveys attitudes toward breastfeeding across time periods (from the 18th to the end of the 20th centuries) and social groups, focusing in turn on white middle-class, white working-class, and black mothers. Although her analysis of biological phenomena as shaped by race, gender, and class superficially resembles various trendy works of contemporary academic discourse, Blum (Sociology and Womens Studies/Univ. of New Hampshire; Between Feminism and Labor, 19TK) eschews a militant ideological agenda and is reluctant to moralize or advocate any pattern of prescribed behavior. Using ample evidence gleaned from her field research interviewing women within each of the target groups, as well as authoritative sources (medical practitioners, psychiatrists, and psychologists), she discovers that in the contemporary world such an ancient and seemingly natural procedure as breastfeeding is embedded in a plethora of historical, political, racial, and economic contexts. For instance, prior to this century, wealthy white women were encouraged to employ wet nurses, usually women of color; this legacy that accounts to a large extent for the fact that nowadays black mothers often reject breastfeeding even though the modern medical establishment exhorts women to breastfeed. White middle-class women, on the other hand, opt for breastfeeding, which they equate with ``moral motherhood.'' As for working white mothers, they breastfeed lessdue to such factors as lack of privacy, the need to earn a living, and health concernsbut are frequently anguished by these impediments to the fulfillment of their ``maternal duty.'' While most previous studies of this sort considered primarily the benefits to the infant of maternal milk, Blum emphasizes the mother's side. She concludes that breastfeeding is a complex issue, which can potentially lead either to self-realization or to self-sacrifice and stress. For the modern feminist, Blum concludes, the choice between the bottle or the breast should proceed from a careful assessment of the woman's own needs and desires. -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. Not "sociology at its best"
By J. Berry
I found this book fascinating ... and maddening. Blum makes some interesting, on-target observations, yet -- despite her awareness that "absences are presences" -- she shapes her research by what she fails to look at. In particular, I was shocked to realize she'd spoken to ONE health care practitioner, even though she speaks authoritatively about "the medical community" pressuring women to breastfeed. This is NOT happening in the real world, where women are discouraged from breastfeeding or given subversive advice based on opinions, not medical research. She "systematically read the various pronouncements of the AAP" and other pieces, then supplemented this with ONE measly interview. Thus she misses learning that the pronouncements of the AAP don't have a thing to do with real doctors and nurses in the real world ... this despite the fact that her own interviews turn up scores of examples of women who got inane advice from doctors and hospital personnel -- advice that destroyed their breastfeeding relationships. Why is this? Because medical schools don't deem breastfeeding important enough to teach. Because breastfeeding is not deemed any HCP's responsibility, and it slips through the cracks. Because HCPs, like everyone, want others to make the decisions they've made. Because HCPs get gifts, free formula, and misinformation from the ubiquitous formula representatives. Blum should read the March 1999 Pediatrics article describing a survey of Fellows of the AAP. This is by no means groundbreaking; past studies have shown similar ignorance in the medical community. These doctors know as much as the average Joe or Jane on the street about breastfeeding, yet they feel confident giving advice -- advice that limits women's choices and robs them of their power. THIS is a feminist issue. This is, to use Robert Mendelsohn's term, MalePractice. How on earth could Blum have missed this point when the evidence is everywhere -- and she herself turned up so much of it? There's a lot of misinformation in this book that could easily have been remedied by research (including Blum's pronouncements on La Leche League, a worldwide organization, based on one geographical area), and I'm disappointed that Blum didn't know better (or perhaps she did, but was too eager to prove her theories and justify her admitted ambivalence about breastfeeding). I'm especially disappointed because this work had so much potential and still contains so many excellent points. And I'm disappointed because, as Katie Allison Granju points out in a previous review, Blum has somehow managed to miss many of the feminist issues tied up in breastfeeding. Blum has let her work be limited by her own experiences -- and she seems too smart for this. :-(

A few nuggets in an otherwise sorry treatment of the subject
By Amazon Customer
I bought this book prepared to be fascinated. I was not disappointed. The author addresses some truly fascinating topics of how we view motherhood and breastfeeding in the United States. She makes some good points.
There were, however, so many problems with this book that it really overshadowed what the author did well. An interesting contrast is shown between the African American mothers and Caucasian American mothers that she interviewed for this book. One group feeling guilty about not breastfeeding and using public assistance, the other group apparently feeling no guilt about not breastfeeding and expressing a sense of entitlement to public assistance programs. Rather than expounding upon this fascinating subject of differing emotional perspectives on breastfeeding, the author serves up her thinly veiled personal political views. Worse, she openly expresses disrespect for one of the mothers that she interviewed, denoting in the book how she "kept the upper hand" in the interview. While one could argue that an interviewer "needs" to stay in control of the interview, there is absolutely no reason to show such public rudeness to someone who freely gave of their time to help the author with her research.
The author makes a conversation about the medical community pushing mothers into guilt about not breastfeeding, based upon ONE interveiw. Without even going into the lack of coverage of varying medical attitudes about breastfeeding in different regions of the United States, it has to be stated that making any such statement based upon just one statement is not only poor judgement, but simply ridiculous. Again the author takes a large issue and over-simplifies it for the convenience of her book.
Ms. Blum's contradictory treatment of the importance of breastfeeding is infuriating. With one hand she states her belief in the benefits of breastfeeding, with the other she marginalizes its importance, as if the decision were no more important than whether to wear blue jeans of khakis.
If you want a very slim beginning to this subject go ahead and read the book. Please, though, borrow it rather than buy it and reward the author for such a poor job.

Simplistic and biased
By Janet Marshall
This book provides overly-simplistic and biased analysis to a complex issue. The individuals within the author's tiny (twenty or fewer) sample sizes of various sub-cultures (such as La Leche League members, minority and disadvantaged women, etc) seem to have been hand-picked in order to "prove" her theory: that breastfeeding is an immensely difficult, arcane, and sexualized undertaking that can/should only be attempted by women with maximum personal privacy, family support and financial backing. The book entirely ignores the empowering, radical feminist nature of breastfeeding (see books by Penny Van Esterik, Katherine Dettwyler, and Gabrielle Palmer for academic research on this topic). The book completely neglects the issue of the relative risks of artificial feeding for American babies, and the book implies quite forcefully that the mountain of peer-reviewed medical research demosntrating the critical importance of human milk is flawed or over-stated in some way.
A better title for this one would have been "Bottle-feeding Without Guilt". Oh wait....that one is already taken... Maybe "Bottle-Feeding Without Guilt for the Intelligentsia" would work then.

Amazon.com Review
Rubber-stamp queen Dee Gruenig returns with more dazzling ideas, this time letting her gleeful imagination loose on another very popular craft--scrapbooking. Combining her bold and colorful approach to stamping with her lifelong love of making memory albums, she offers many delightful ways to create unforgettable pages that unite the best of both crafts. Rather than purchasing preprinted scrapbook pages, follow Gruenig's straightforward instructions to make sponged, stickered, bordered, patterned, striped, plaid, embossed, brayered, spattered, or themed backgrounds that help even the most ho-hum photos come alive. Not only do her designs nicely frame full-photo images on the page, but many are actually intricate background landscapes that cleverly incorporate individual figures cut from the photos, decoupage style. --Amy Handy

Great resource for scrapbookers and rubber stampers.
By A Customer
Dee Gruenig, pioneer in the fields of scrapbooking and rubber stamping, has finally published a book on combining these two activities. Through bold and extensive use of color and style she gives many examples on how to liven up your scrapbook pages.
Scrapbookers new to stamping will easily learn and enjoy the pictures and step-by-step directions of techniques used in rubber stamping, many of which are familiar to stampers from her previous books and videos. Stamps used in this books are Posh Impressions, ideally suited for scrapbook decorating.
My only complaint on this book was the extensive use of sticker paper, using the rubber stamping mostly to make stickers and sticker frames for the photographs and not as much on using the stamped image to decorate the page itself. However, for the beginnig stamper and scrapbooker, this will probably be a much easier way to embellish the new family heirloom. For more advanced crafters looking for more elaborate techniques (layering, masking, etc.), I would advise you look for a more advanced rubber stamping book to use as a companion to this one.

dissappointed...
By retroredux
I love to see Dee doing projects on The Carol Duvall show so I bought this book and her first book.

Sadly-Dee's teaching skills are much better on film than in a book.

Dee's project are very involved and multi layered-but with just a small paragraph per project-it is almost impossible for all but the most experienced stamper to follow.

Another problem is that both books start out very complicated-there is no simple projects to warm up on.

While I love color-anyone who tends to like more muted tones will be overwhelmed by the bold, almost dizzying use of color in Dee's work-and probably turned off because there are no other versions shown-just the very colorful depictions so it is hard to envision these projects in any other way.

I do understand the Dee has a couple of instructional DVD's out-I would suggest that you get those and learn her techniques on film before tackling her books.

3 stars.

Chock full of great illustrations and "how to" descriptions
By A Customer
This incredibly vivid book is packed full of ideas to enliven and personalize scrapbooks with stamps and other artistic techniques. Its highly worthwhile as a general purpose "how to" book for projects other than scrapbooks. Its formatted with a page illustrating a technique or multiple decorative techniques - the facing page has succinct instructions. This book is high on content. I think this book's a must for any rubber stamper or anyone whose just looking for ways to enliven their scrapbooks. I, however, only rated it 4 stars for one reason and that may be just personal preference - you might feel different. The scrapbook pages are so intensely decorated and vivacious that the photo(s) is over-shadowed badly. I myself would tone the decoration down a little to better showcase the photo.

My Father's Keeper: The Story of a Gay Son and His Aging Parents, by Jonathan G. Silin

My Father's Keeper is the moving story of Jonathan Silin, a gay man in midlife who learned to care for his elderly parents as a series of life-threatening illnesses forced them to make the difficult transition from being independent to being reliant on their son. Their new needs and unrelenting demands brought parents and child into intimate daily contact and radically transformed what had been a distant and emotionally fraught relationship.

My Father's Keeper chronicles the ways in which the ideas and skills Silin acquired as an early childhood educator, a specialist in life span development, and a compassionate witness to the devastation of the HIV/AIDS crisis came together with his interest in human psychology to deeply inform his thinking about the dramatic changes in his family's life and increasingly influence his role as his father's (and mother's) keeper.

From Publishers Weekly
When his elderly parents begin failing in health, the author, a Bank Street College educator, must come to terms with a drastic shift in caretaking roles. His account recognizes a lifetime of transformative relations with his parents, Depression-era New York Jews, especially his father, for whom the author's declaration of gayness decades earlier struck like a "personal injury." The father's sense of betrayal by the son, begun when the author started writing on gay issues and signing them with his name (which is also the father's name), is compounded as the father undergoes successive, debilitating operations for cancer of the larynx. Losing control of his body, the father reasserts his authority by taking care of finances while lashing out at his son, leaving him feeling "ambushed," intimidated and reluctant to visit the nursing home where his father lives. Despite past efforts to distance himself from his disapproving parents, Silin, well into his 50s, must take responsibility for their care, preferring a caring approach, rather than treating them like dependent children. Forgiveness occasionally graces these encounters, as when the author's partner of 30 years dies, and Silin's father offers a tender acknowledgment. Silin's work is at once thoughtful and erudite. From Booklist
Former early childhood classroom teacher Silin, who now teaches other early childhood teachers, drew on his professional skills to help his parents as their eighties brought his father glaucoma, spinal stenosis, and laryngial cancer; his mother ulcer surgery, numerous small strokes, and heart problems; and both of them broken hips. In turn, his experiences with them affected his work as he expanded his postgraduate teaching to consider the early years of rapid, obvious development as part of overall lifespan development, and to emphasize the evolution of child-parent relationships over time. His report on the interaction of his professional and filial experiences proves most refreshing in his refusal ever to regard his parents as children, no matter their levels of dependency, for "to imagine that our roles were reversed would have undermined their dignity while burdening me with confusing emotions." As his caretaker role evolves and evokes memories of childhood, he remains forever their child, even as he becomes the primary decision maker among them. Whitney Scott

Review
Jonathan Silin offers a series of valuable reports from what might be called the country of farewells, using his raw experience to explore important questions about childhood, education, parenting, privacy, control, mental health, old age, death, and forgiveness. This is a rich, careful, honest book, both nakedly personal and coolly philosophical. I've never read anything quite like it.--Christopher Bram, author of Gods and Monsters

My Fathers Keeper Book Review
By Jess L.
My Father's Keeper is the story of a gay man in midlife who must learn to care for his elderly parents when their health begins to fail. The novel takes you through his life roles as he undergoes a shift in responsibilities. We are taken through the struggles that both Silin and his parents must endure as becomes the caretaker and his parents accept their new limitations. This story conveys Silins struggles with distancing his himself from his parents enough that he can understand them, but not absorb the anger caused by their illness. The ultimate message that we are left with is what it means to be a caregiver to the very end. Silin's work is thoughtful and honest. He offers a series of valuable reports using his experiences from childhood, education, parenting, mental health, old age, death, and forgiveness. This is a unique, well written story that provides us with what may lie ahead.
