Through years of ethnographic work in Latino centers in San Antonio, Los Angeles, New York, San Jose, and Watsonville, California, eight prominent Latino scholars from disciplines such as anthropology, political science, and literary and legal studies explore the dynamics of Latino community-building and "cultural citizenship"-the use of cultural expression to claim political rights in the larger culture while maintaining a vibrant local identity. Chapters detail acts of cultural affirmation in Christmas festival celebrations in Texas, cannery strikes in California, educational programs in New York, and much more. A pathbreaking work of Latino scholarship, this book will help redefine the conversation about the future of community and the nature of citizenship in the United States

Insightful
By Deborah Sparks
The book goes into the struggles and ideas that the Hispanic culture face in the United States. Some of the information took a direction of almost "whining". For instance, on the topic of social services the information tended to take a point of view that people are "owed" their fair share of tax payer support to pay for their cultural values of child-rearing duties. There was also a view point that the social service office should treat those receiving social services better and that the reason they were treated poorly was due to race. From what I have seen and experienced, social services works the same for everyone and all races are treated equally poorly regardless of gender, color, education level, etc. The issues faced by the workers in the cannery with the lowered wages, the strike, and the move of the factory to Mexico has happened in many different industries across the United States and affected different races in very similar ways, not just the Hispanic community.
