The authors offer a unique how-to on interpreting dreams one has during the period just before death. With a nod to various scientific and religious factions whose opinions of dreams range from considering them to be of no value to believing they are works of Satan, the authors contend that "one of the functions of dreaming is precisely to create the meanings that will help us face the end with courage and understanding." If the very thing that defines humans is the ability to find meaning, they say, then allowing oneself to experience, remember, and find meaning in dreams can only serve to enrich one's last days. To support that supposition, they present anecdotes gleaned mainly from hospice spiritual-services provider Bulkley's professional experience. They make a case in favor of dreams as endowing the journey to death with opportunities for mending fences, making peace with a troubled conscience, and looking beyond temporary pain to a rich reward or, at least, a welcome serenity. About the Author
Kelly Bulkeley is a visiting scholar at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California, and the author of several books, including Dreams of Healing and The Wandering Brain. Rev. Dr. Patricia (Tish) Bulkley is a Presbyterian minister who was the spiritual services provider at Hospice of Marin for ten years. She currently serves on the teaching staff of the Program in Christian Spirituality at San Francisco Theological Seminary in San Anselmo, California.

Where are The Scientists?

I find it interesting that the most intelligent, most balanced, and most informative book I've read on this subject yet has been written by a theological scholar and his Presbyterian minister mother.

Where are the scientists? They're still hiding from the elephant in the room, still trying to deny the reality of a subject that has deeply interested humanity for thousands of years. It could be that it's just too challenging. Psychologist J.B. Rhine, who investigated everything else, explained that he avoided this subject because it was the "Mount Everest" of paranormal phenomena.

But I'm not only talking about psychologists. The attention of physicists is required to identify the medium that telepathy (very common in dreams), ESP and precognition use, phenomena whose reality is beyond dispute. Sadly, they talk so easily now about other dimensions, time travel or quantum entanglement, but they're still afraid of anything labelled paranormal.

So, if you want to learn about dream phenomena associated with the mind's reaction to approaching death, this book is for you.

There are only 152 pages, so you wouldn't expect it to also offer an introduction to the nature of dreams in general, and how to deal with them from a practical point of view, but it does that too, and does it very well. So, even if you just want to find out what is going on with dreams, this is a good place to start.

If you're not a Christian, don't be troubled by the calling of the two authors. They seem non-denominational, and they're obviously open-minded, not inclined to dismiss the ideas or culture of other people.

When you've been studying dreams all your life and you meet a new book about them, what you're most interested in is the new dreams. This book has some jewels. I'm tempted to talk about specific ones, but there are too many that deserve attention.

There is a chapter, `Care for the Dying' that doesn't have much to do with dreaming and feels out of synch with the rest. I might have reduced the book to four stars for that, but when you consider that a significant number of readers may actually be dying, it probably is appropriate.

We in the 21st century don't live in a great age of dreaming. If you don't know what I mean, near the end of the book you encounter some of the dreams from the journal of Vibia Perpetua, a young Roman woman in the 2nd century condemned to be executed in the arena by wild beasts because of her refusal to renounce Christianity. As her final day approached her dreams anticipated her death in an artistic and dramatic way that made her journal famous among contemporary Christians for years afterward. You won't forget Perpetua.

Mortal Wisdom

Patricia Bulkely is a spiritual counselor in Hospice. And Kelly Bulkeley has wide experience as a dream researcher and author. Together they have written a poignant book of the dying and their dreams. By exploring the meaning of the dreams and visions of the dying, the authors hope to help people recover not only a meaningful sense of death, but what it means to be alive.

The lessons of pre-death dreams constellate around three themes. And the authors report that the understanding of these themes can help the dreamer expand and deepen the awareness of their life. The first theme noted from the dreams of the dying is that death in dreams is most often represented by the idea of a journey, rather than the cessation of life. For example, one dying man began to have dreams of a ship on the ocean. And in the dream, he was the captain of that ship.

The second type of dream often experienced by the dying is the "visitation" dream, an emotionally intense and often "hyperrealistic" dream in which the dreamer is visited by someone deceased who returns to provide guidance, reassurance or warning. These types of dreams, the authors report, do not so much deny death but transcend death, "providing experiential evidence of human connections that extend beyond mortal life."

The third type of dream often experienced by the dying is dream in which the obstacles in life are made known. If death is viewed as a journey, write the authors, then these pre-death dreams serve as a source of insight of the obstacles along that path. This type of dream seems to tell us that impending death will not wash away our regrets, our mistaken beliefs or what we view as our transgressions. We will in life, have to come to terms with the obstacles that have hindered us while living. The authors note as example, a dying woman whose traditional religious beliefs offered neither solace nor guidance as she neared death. Her dreams though helped her envision a reality where God did not punish, and where death was seen as a passage into another realm of life that included joy and reunion with those she loved.

"What the dying person experiences in waking life as an agonizing onslaught of painful memory becomes, in dreaming," the authors point out, "the raw material for new growth, broader connections, and a deeper sense of self-integrity." The self that lives in denial of dark secrets, inevitably crumbles in dreams.

The authors disagree with claims "that all religious and mystical traditions lead to the same realization of pure consciousness, peak experience, absolute unitary being, or any other monolithic, one-size-fits-all state of mind. At least in the realm of dreaming," the authors report, "the revelatory experience is so deeply rooted in the individual's personal life history and cultural context that it makes no sense to try and extract a `universal core' from it."

This book also includes a chapter on "Care for the Dying," "A Summary of Methods," and "Resources for Caregiving for the Terminally Ill."

Help for the dying and their caregivers

This excellent title helps people to understand the types of dreams that people have prior to dying- and how to honor and use the messages that come with these dreams. It will be particularly useful for family and friend caregivers who may not understand the importance of dreams in preparing a person for death and how dreams can bring meaning and peace to the process. It provides also a very short, yet incredibly useful, introduction on how to interpret dreams in general. This title is highly recommended.

in this volume, mari matusda continues her exploration of the intersection of race and gender, and how american society makes laws to both control and react to issues of identity. the work, written in very accessible first person narrative, contains so many poignant, simply stated recountings, that you feel as if you and your closest friend are talking about your most initimate thoughts and secrets. highly recommended for anyone interested in how today's laws, today's people feel and interrelate around these touchy topics.
not just for scholars. the words are easily accessible to anyone who has ever had a harsh word thrown at them or witnessed any kind of abusive behavior.

Outstanding book for introducing your child to chess!

I have an 8 year old son who has always wanted to play chess, but has been a little intimidate by the complexity of the game. A kind librarian at our local public library saw my son carrying around my copy of the "Idiot's Guide to Chess" and thought he could use a more age-appropriate book.
He has enjoyed "Start Playing Chess" so much, I have had to buy him his own copy. It is an excellent book; there are large diagrams with easy-to-understand explanations and illustrations on the moves and the rules. I can honestly say that because of this book, my son has rapidly caught on to the game, and is now looking at his move in terms of strategy, as opposed to playing chess like you would checkers.
A very enjoyable, well written book that will help any child learn this wonderful game.

Great book for younger children!

I was looking for a way to introduce my 7 year old son to the rules and movements of chess. We used this book over the course of a weekend and were able to get him into more thoughtful play.

The examples and quizzes helped him to see possibilities that he was previously missing.

Important New Book for Secondary School Educators

Jessica Hoffmann Davis has written extensively on the importance of arts programs in our schools. In her new book, "Why Our High Schools Need the Arts," she continues her arts "manifesto" while venturing into new territory that is specific to the goals of our nation's secondary schools. Tangible evidence is considered regarding the potential impact of quality arts programs on the ever-increasing high school drop-out rate. The role of drama as a catalyst for adolescent success is examined. How the arts can address teenage social/emotional issues and encourage empathy, respect and self-esteem is discussed. A moving and important memoir of the Army of Tennessee.

Anyone who has done research on the Civil War approaches veteran's memoirs with a degree of caution. Memoirs are always self serving to some extent and often take too much advantage of hindsight. This work is remarkably free of such justifications. Rather it is the honest work of a soldier coming to terms with his war experiences. Philip Stephenson was a mere boy from St. Louis, age 15, when he followed his brother, Hammett, to Memphis to join the Confederat army. Hammett enlisted in the 13th Ark. and the underage Philip tagged along. He served as something of a mascot to his brother's company until he enlisted in the 5th Co. Washington Artillery. Until then he seemed to be free to come and go. Stephenson was present at or near most of the actions of the Army of Tennessee. He relates what he observed in great detail particularly in the last year of the war. Through his memoirs we see what he saw on the march, on the field and in camp. His descriptions of various Arkansans from officers to enlisted men offer rare insights to the boys which can be found in no other place. His observations on the men of the 13th Ark. are somewhat condescending, but he says, "All of them made as fine fighting material as the world could produce." The first one-third of his text covers the years 61-63. The greatest part of his memoirs discuss affairs that took place from 64 to the end of the war. From the Atlanta campaign until the war ends, his writing seems much more personal, more expressive of his emotions at the time. This coincides with the period when he served in the 5th Co. of the Washington Artillery and marked the first period of the war that he was not under his older brother's wing. From the moment Sherman attacked the Rebs at Dalton in early May until the Battle of Jonesboro on Sept. 1st, the men were in constant danger. Stephenson notes the horrors of trench warfare and the stress that it put on the men. The pressure became too great for some and he describes some of those who cracked. One member of his battery horrified the other members by taking his bayonet and jabbing out the eys of a dead yankee. Another deliberately walked between the lines to relieve himself as everyone watched in disbelief and the man was killed by a sharpshooter. Clearly this campaign had pushed many of the men to the breaking point. Perhaps no other participant has been as effective and honest in telling this story. Stephenson's account of the Battle of Franklin is very moving. His unit had been guarding a bridge some 30 miles away from Franklin and by forced march had arrived on the field between 9 o'clock at night just as the battle was dying down. Stephenson's one thought was the welfare of his brother and friends in the 13th Ark and he went among the wounded crying out "Where's Govan's Brigade." He finds his 3 best friends badly wounded and there on the battlefield they break into tears to find each other still alive. If there had been any thought of winning the war, it ended there. After Franklin, surviving would replace winning as the ultimate goal. Stephenson's memoirs are very personal. Through them we see how one survivor deals with his memories of both the best times and the worst times of his life.

This book, (along with William Fletcher's "Rebel Private: Front and Rear" and Sam Watkins' "Co. Aytch"), ranks among the best accounts of the war experience by the Confederate soldier. Stephenson, an excellent and vivid writer, practically transports the reader to the 1860s to share in his joys and sorrows. He literally brings the reader to tears as he shares the horrendous tragedies which befell him and his comrades. Following is one of my favorite excerpts:
"The next morning I felt desperate. Unless I could get more covering, I would die. The orders were not to leave the command, but I disobeyed them. I knew that I would be of no service whatever in the condition in which I was. So starting off early I left the road and struck across country with the hope of striking some section less visited by soldiers and of finding some woman at one of the many farm houses whose heart and hand both would open to my destitute condition. I suppose I walked eight or ten miles without meeting any encouragement whatever. The people universally talked as if they were stripped of everything.
About 3 p. m. I turned my steps in despair toward Nashville. For the first time I began to experience the feeling of actual demoralization. The idea of going back to the command without a blanket, to endure indefinitely the rigors of the previous night and that too in the face of the prospective horrors then threatening the army, or an an alternative the unspeakable misery of a Yankee prison, this was unsupportable. Shoeless, hatless, blanketless, ragged to nakedness, was I. How could I do a soldier's duties? Still, what else was before me?
With such thoughts I was gloomily wending my way along the Nolansville Pike, when a turn in the road brought before me a handsome brick residence. After hesitating, I moodily determined to try once more. The Negroes, as I passed through the front yard, looked from their comfortable side cabins with evident contempt upon my pitiful attire, and it was not until they saw I was not to be trifled with, that any one of them moved forward to attend to me. With ill concealed feelings of dejection and shame, I followed a house servant into the cozy sitting room of the home. My wretched appearance and my beggar's errand humiliated me and sent the hot blush to my cheek. I was nothing more nor less than a ragged beggar, and in all probability about to be turned away another time from the door.
I have never forgot those feelings! They have been the cause of the sympathy and the help I have always tried to give ever since to the tramp of modern days.
A sweet faced, gentle looking lady of middle age in deep mourning was sitting by the fire in the room where I was taken, to whom I was introduced by my pert usher as 'a soldier Ma'am!' She arose and placed a seat beside her own chair by the glowing flame and began to talk to me in a kindly tone that made my heart leap to my throat and the tears start to my eyes in spite of all efforts at suppression. I excused my coming in by saying, 'I wished to warm.' The true reason choked me and would not come up. She kept me in conversation until long after I was comfortably warm. Then I ought to have gone, I suppose, but I didn't, or I ought to have asked for my blanket, but I didn't, for I couldn't. Then dinner was announced! It was with unfeigned regret that I heard it. I had not come for that and did not want to be so understood. I had supposed from the lateness of the hour that they had dined sometime before. I arose to leave. The lady, however, pressed me to stay, and so I went, rags, dirt and all, into the dining room. An old gentleman [Enoch Ensley] was there, tall, slender, whitehaired, fine looking. He received me with courtesy and regard. After dinner I sat with them conversing on the all overshadowing subject, the War, and it was five o'clock when I arose to go! Then the lady pressed me to tell her my needs, and I told her I had no blanket. She left the room and in a minute returned with one in her hands, a large double brown blanket, a mackinaw I think, a fine fellow such as very few of our men could boast! A perfect treasure. 'It belonged to my Yankee guard,' she said, and was one he had bought just prior to the arrival of our troops. She did not think her giving it to me would bring her any trouble, so with a heart full of thanksgiving I took it and departed. An altogether different man I was. That Yankee blanket saved my life. Or rather, that sweet lady. Her name was Mrs. [Mary] Ensley. Only once since then have I been in that region, and then I was too sick to go and see if she was still alive. Indeed I am sure I was told she was dead many years, but the memory of her and her deed, will never die."

When Ed Salven returned after thirty years to Fort Ord, where he was stationed in the late 1960s, he found a ghost town. In July of 1968, at the age of 20, Salven, having been drafted, began his basic training at Fort Ord, on California's Monterey Bay. He served his time, returned to California, and opened his own landscaping business. He didn't return until more than 30 years later, after Fort Ord's closing in 1994. But when he did, the recollections came in cascades. Salven wrote down more than 80 of them, and they form the poetic core of this book. Hushed, vivid and digressive, and set in lines of verse, they read like a cross between Joe Brainard's I Remember and zen reportage. On a later trip back, Salven found a set of soldier portraits done in 1994, the year Fort Ord was closed, by local art students. They, along with photographs of the abandoned base that Salven took, form a moving semi-contemporary counterpoint to Salven's recollections. This book makes a unique contribution to the literature of Vietnam, and to contemporary debates about the American military. 50 color illustrations.

Author's rebuttal to an "ex infantry Lt's" review...

After some time away from the space graciously dedicated to my nonfiction retrospective book, THE SOLDIER FACTORY - A Window, (George Braziller, NY - 2006)I was of course dismayed to find the single scathing review by Mr. Cagle who preportedly was a Lieutenant, and was stationed at Fort Ord about the time I was there in 1968 & 69. Apparently the book was not the kind or content Mr. Cagle was looking or hoping for. Admittedly, it is not the conventional battle ground recollection piece, or war time record which is the norm, and enjoyed by many veterans of many ages across time. And for the most part only veterans.

I must state in my own defense, that I stand by everything that is in the text in terms of my recollections. It is not my story, it is my experience. And with due respect to Mr.(Lt) Cagle, the minutia (in terms of military facts) he choses to dispute, in one instance was taken out-of-context - that being the single-minded devotion to the US Army and ongoing self-improvement witin the ranks by Captain Tate whom I wrote of. This was the 'scrambled egg' reference. At the time Captain Tate was attending MPC for degree necessary to be promoted to Major and thereby be privileged to wear the concomitant regalia of an officer of that rank. Secondly, Mr. Cagle contradictes himself regarding General Stilwell being A WW I officer in his very next sentence. Apparentely General Stillwell gained notority in WWII. My book is not about General Stillwell.

As to the part about the 'dead sea animals' shot below the rifle ranges on the beach - to be accurate, the majority of them were a good quarter to half mile north of the ranges, and I defy anyone to dispute what I saw on more than one occassion on my walks, and what was admitted openly to me by soldiers in charge of weapons meant for training. In any event, I call my book a 'window' for a reason. It is a clear and absolutely accurate view of what I saw and experienced in Fort Ord over my extended stay there in 68 & 69. The book has a broader appeal than 'Vets only'. Although I have been praised and even thanked for the history recorded between those covers by combat veterans of Vietnam, as well as women and civilians of diverse age groups who are interested in that volitile time in our common American history.

I, too, was there.

I served at Ft. Ord from November, 1969 through the last day of August, 1971. I certainly never saw dead animals on the beach or off-duty soldiers on the beach shooting animals. I never saw off-duty soldiers with weapons. And the author can indeed be careless about rank. But a great deal of what he says about the tenor of the times is entirely true. The book's paintings do not appeal to me, so I wish that more photographs had been included, but I found the author's musings well worth reading. It was an era when so many of those of us who were then young were pulled in opposing directions at the same time. Very exciting, very uncomfortable, often maddening, and easily brought back by writers such as Mr. Salven. Incidently, I was perminent party in Receiving Company after Mr. Salven left, and I was in SSG. Campbell's barracks. He did indeed have a lot of pain and caused a lot of fear among the rest of us.

Soldier Factory not fantasy

Unlike Mr. Cagel I enjoyed Mr. Salven's book. Though not in the Army at the time, I was serving in Southeast Asia with the Air Force. I cannot vouch for any accuracy of Army terms, rank, nor history, but I can state that I found the book thought provoking and in its way an insight into the military at the time. There was a fracture in society which was also evident in the services over what was happening in SEA, what our true purpose was there, and how that endeavor was to be achieved. Mr. Salven brings this to light as well as hurmous thoughts of his service at Fort Ord. Personally, I am glad Mr. Salven has his memories published along with poetry and photos in a presentation which reflects both his past and present. Thank you Ed Salven!

Rachel Carson (1907-1964), author of The Silent Spring, has been celebrated as the pioneer of the modern environmental movement. Although she wrote no autobiography, she did leave letters, and those she exchanged?sometimes daily?with Dorothy Freeman, some 750 of which are collected here, are perhaps more satisfying than an account of her own life. In 1953, Carson became Freeman's summer neighbor on Southport Island, Me. The two discovered a shared love for the natural world?their descriptions of the arrival of spring or the song of a hermit thrush are lyrical?but their friendship quickly blossomed, as each realized she had found in the other a kindred spirit. To read this collection is like eavesdropping on an extended conversation that mixes the mundane events of the two women's family lives with details of Carson's research and writing and, later, her breast cancer. Although both were prolific letter writers, Carson's letters predominate here. Many of Freeman's letters and a fair number of Carson's may have been deliberately destroyed by mutual consent. Evidently, the two women were uneasy about their content being misinterpreted. The letters display an unusual intensity of feeling, which could easily lead outsiders to an assumption of a homosexual relationship were it not also clear that Freeman's husband and son and Carson's family particpated in and supported this friendship. Editor Martha Freeman, Dorothy's granddaughter, provides valuable footnotes explaining references to people and events in the letters unfamiliar to readers. These notes are set in the outside page margins, alongside the related text of the letters, a feature readers will find enormously helpful. This correspondence provides insight into the creative process and a look into the daily lives of two intelligent, perceptive women whose family responsibilities were, at times, almost crushing. Carson's crowning achievement, Silent Spring, seems all the more significant for having been accomplished while she was struggling with the side effects of cancer treatment. While this book is well -written and I have long been a huge Rachel Carson fan, I found this book very hard to read. It feels very voyeuristic, as the letters are obviously very personal to the two women who wrote them. I understand the granddaughter had her grandmother's permission to publish - but I SERIOUSLY feel this shouldn't have been done. These letters should remain private, and I would not read the rest of the book.

Insights into a life

After seeing a video, "A Sense of Wonder", which portrays Rachel Carson giving her account of her life and the writing of "Silent Spring" I went looking for a biography that would fill in the pieces. Synopses of most did not seem to deal with the questions in my mind of her family relationships and responsibilities, of how she came to do what she did. "Always, Rachel" is beginning to do just that. The editor's preface by Dorothy Freeman's granddaughter and introduction by Paul Brooks provide excellent explanations and create a framework for understanding the letters.
If you're looking for a quick read, this isn't it. It is however a lovely portrait of a life that can be picked up and put down in short sessions.

Beautiful

You don't have to have read any of Rachel Carson's books in order to fully appreciate the letters she wrote to her best friend. These letters (nearly 3/4 written by Rachel) show the love and intensity of her friendship with Dorothy Freeman; they offer a glimpse of what life was like in the 1950s and 1960s - particularly the world of publishing and environmentalism; they show her fear and courage during her fight with breast cancer. She doesn't go into much detail about the writing process she went through with "Silent Spring," but it's clear that the fact that she wrote it and published it at all is something close to a miracle. Her fight against breast cancer would be an inspiration to anyone. Even with everything that goes on within these letters, what is paramount is her love for Dorothy. Few of Dorothy's letters were saved, but the few that were included in the book show why she and Rachel were such good friends. These letters bring to life many emotions: fear, grief, euphoria, anticipation, dread, anger, confusion, apprehension, appreciation and love.

This book is a narrative of what friendship should be.

Also, the footnotes are absolutely wonderful! Instead of being at the back of the book or at the end of the letters, they are in the margins - so there's no inconvenient flipping back and forth. It's a small detail, but it was one I really appreciated.
