It was great getting this book and reading the stories of these notable "improper Bostonians." Boston has always been proud of being improper, but it took a lot longer for gay impropers to be accepted.

Pervasive white racism--often subtle and covert, at times blatant--is a daily reality for African Americans, according to the 209 middle-class blacks interviewed for this important and disturbing report. The respondents tell of discrimination on the job in salary, evaluations and promotions; prejudice against black renters and homebuyers by white landlords, real estate agents, homeowners and neighbors; the channeling of black students into vocational "tracks"; physical assaults and institutionalized racism on college campuses; and daily hostility blacks face in restaurants, stores and other public places. Feagin, a white sociologist at the University of Florida, and Sikes, a black psychologist who conducts anti-racism workshops, call for much more multiculturalism in U.S. schooling, aggressive enforcement of affirmative action and initiatives by white leaders to eradicate widespread racial prejudice and stereotyping by the white majority.

E. Franklin Frazier's Black Bourgeoisie is now almost three generations old. It is time for as definitive a study about the black middle class today. Feagin, a white sociologist, and Sikes, a black psychologist, present the culture of the class through open-ended interviews with 209 of its members. The interviews are presented in topical chapters on racial discrimination in public places, in educational organizations, in the marketplace (i.e., that which employees face), in entrepreneurship (that which businesspersons face), and in seeking a good home and neighborhood. The book closes with a "wherefrom-whitherto" look into the future. As a whole, the book is thematically organized to refute the contention of such prominent black intellectuals as Thomas Sowell and William Julius Wilson, as well as whites ones such as Daniel Patrick Moynihan, that the black middle class has escaped racism. Feagin and Sikes for the most part accept the evidence of macrosociological mobility: the black middle class is much wealthier, more prestigious, and more educated than it was, and it is growing rapidly. A challenging, if not always thorough, reminder that middle- class blacks face accumulated experiences of racism too often ignored by the majority culture and scholars of race relations. Complementing and overlapping Ellis Cose's The Rage of a Privileged Class (not reviewed), this book offers a broader sample and more theoretical grounding but less of a narrative voice. The authors announce at the outset their disagreement with less liberal commentators ranging from Daniel Patrick Moynihan to Stephen Carter for emphasizing the so-called black underclass over the widespread experience of racism. Feagin (Sociology/Univ. of Florida) and Sikes, a consultant and antiracism workshop leader, have compiled the results of interviews with 209 middle-class African-Americans. The litany is disturbing. Interviewees tell of being refused service or treated with suspicion in restaurants and other public places. Their children are ``tracked'' into vocational subjects and are more likely to be suspended for subjective offenses like disobedience. In the workplace, as one interviewee explains, ``blacks in the company had jobs, and whites had careers.'' The authors discuss discrimination against black business owners and home buyers and reveal survival strategies ranging from institutional confrontation to humor. They conclude that Americans must do more to confront the reality of white racism and support better education about racism for children black and white. But their assessment, for example, of racism on campus is hardly complete, blaming white students and campus culture without sufficiently analyzing the issues of self-segregation and Afrocentrism. Nor do they fully address the effects, both good and bad, of the recent trend toward corporate ``diversity training.'' Grade 1–3—Penny, a period, and her friend Quentin, a question mark, are excited about the upcoming Punctuation Bee. Elsie, a brash and confident exclamation mark, points out that an exclamation mark has been victorious for the past three years, making Penny even more determined to win. Predictably, she takes the lead as the bell rings to end the competition. Savvy students of grammar will note logical flaws in the story. Connie the comma and Penny the period are awarded extra points for using their punctuation marks multiple times within a sentence, though other contestants could never receive more than one point. Penny's winning point is awarded erroneously; though she recites her sentence aloud, she is given a point for the written abbreviation of the word "Mister." While a few useful lessons can be found in the text, these examples are lost within the busy page design. Law's enthusiastically colorful, simplistic punctuation people do little to save Donohue's mediocre story. Donohue's Done IT Again!

Moira Rose Donohue has done it again! Her new picture book, Penny and the Punctuation Bee, shows us how important end punctuation is. This follows her Alfie the Apostrophe, which brought punctuation alive for young readers. Teachers will love the clever use of the punctuation bee as another way to practice punctuation while young readers will enjoy Penny's enthusiasm and delight in winning the bee. Teachers will also find other ways to use Penny and Alfie to make punctuation come alive for young writers. Let's hope for a sequel!

Penny Dazzles and Teaches at the same time

Donohue follows Alfie the Apostrophe with another romp through the world of animate punctuation marks. This book focuses on final punctuation marks and Penny the star of the book is a dazzling, fun, wonderful, and makes learning about punctuation an adventure. As an adult who has trouble with punctuation and grammar, I am a huge fan of Donohue's books and I can actually use it to learn from too. But the real value of this book is that it will intrigue and entertain children as they learn about punctuation.

About the Author
A former professor of English and women’s studies, Patricia A. Gozemba is the coauthor of Pockets of Hope: How Students and Teachers Change the World. She is also a founding member of The History Project, which has been documenting LGBT Boston since 1980. The former editor of Sojourner: The Women’s Forum, Karen Kahn also edited Frontline Feminism: Essays from “Sojourner’s” First Twenty Years. Gozemba and Kahn married in September 2005; they live in Salem, Massachusetts. Marilyn Humphries is an independent photojournalist whose work over the past twenty-five years has appeared in numerous publications, ranging from the New York Times and the Progressive to Bay Windows, Gay Community News, and the Boston Phoenix. She lives in Beverly, Massachusetts.

A perfect pairing of photos and prose tell the whole story of marriage equality in Massachusetts

While reading Courting Equality it became clear to me that the photos and the prose each could stand alone as a book-length work on the struggle for the civil right to same-sex marriage in Massachusetts. Together they present a powerful documentation of the latest civil rights struggle in the commonwealth and a blueprint for civil rights activists engaged in any battle for their rights.

Marilyn Humphries' photos document 25 years of the struggle and represent both the personal and political helping the reader to understand how it touched the lives of individuals and families in Massachusetts. Gozemba and Kahn, clearly inspired by the photos, write the story of the struggle as both personal and political history. As I read about the day the decision was handed down I felt like I was reading over Mary Bonauto's shoulder as she first read the decision on the steps of the court, and I felt like I was with each couple as they heard the news and headed to Boston for the press conference held by GLAD later that day to announce the decision.

The book goes on to document the details of the history of the struggle - the political strategy, legal wrangling, and activism that lead to the decision and to its implementation - with clarity and brilliance that neither minimizes the complexity of the process nor complicates it. Finally the authors document the impact of the decision on the personal lives of some of the first couples married in Massachusetts and their families. Their joy, love, and commitment to each other and to the struggle are apparent in both the photos and in the prose.

This is a page-turner, very hard to put down once you start looking at the photos and reading even a little of the text. It also is beautifully designed and laid out. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the struggle for equality and the workings of democracy.

Up Close and Personal- This Book is for the Heart.

Courting Equality is a book that will forever remain on my coffee table. Not only because the essays and moving, the photos beautiful and sometimes painful reminders, but because it is a piece of my history.

I remember the foster care debate; I walked the final version of the Gay and Lesbian Civil rights bill around the State House for signatures. I remember the press conferences, the AIDS rallies... I remember thinking GLAD and the Goodridge plaintiffs were wonderfully idealistic and completely out of their minds.

Each photo, each essay serves as a tool to teach my kids about before and after. How people fought hard and believed against all odds in demanding change. They can also pick themselves out of the back row on the first anniversary photo in front of the State House steps. The book is personal and up close. It brings tears to my eyes every time I open it.

I can believe we won.

Over time, many books will be written about the historic changes that occurred in Massachusetts in 2004. Scholars will debate and publish different views. This book? This is one for the heart. It is for anyone and everyone who cares about the movement.

What could be more uplifting than to read a tale of seven courageous couples who took a public stand on what they believed and changed the course of history in Massachusetts? Karen Kahn and Pat Gozemba, in Courting Equality, chronicle the history of the LGBT movement leading up to 2003 landmark decision allowing same sex marriage. Don't look for a drab, preachy treatise on how the law was passed, but rather sit back and enjoy reading an informative, thought provoking, well written novel that unfolds like a well wrought mystery. Couple that with the extraordinary photos of Marilyn Humphries and you'll rejoice with the authors and photojournalist in a colossal celebration of the long overdue justice, equality and fairness finally accorded to same sex couples who simply want to live their lives as a family.

Arrested, jailed, and ultimately banished to the North, Brownlow continued his war of words against the Confederacy through speaking tours and through the publication in 1862 of Sketches of the Rise, Progress, and Decline of Secession; with a Narrative of Personal Adventures Among the Rebels―a best-selling but ill-organized hodgepodge of his editorials, speeches, letters, and commentary. An Inspiring Genius

Over a decade ago, I was fortunate to attend one of Maxine Greene's presentations at Lincoln Center. Physically, Ms. Greene was a frail, older woman seated in a chair onstage. Yet spiritually, she was a powerhouse of ideas and inspiration that moved many in the room to applause and acknowledgement. We were listening to someone very special and deliciously wise. I wrote furiously, taking notes as Maxine's wisdom was clearly what an educator (of any subject) needed to hear. I'm so happy to find this book ten years later. Although Ms. Greene is no longer with us, her book is like an enduring gift and I'm thrilled to be able to learn more from this extraordinary educator.

When Nellis M. Crouse's Lemoyne d'Iberville was originally published in 1954, the New York Times declared that "Mr. Crouse's study of Iberville closes a gap in North American historical biography". Indeed, this book is the first and only full-length English-language biography of the great leader of French Louisiana, who lived from 1661 to 1706. Though scholarship in French colonial history has increased greatly since it was first released, Crouse's work still has much to offer. He explores the Canadian origins and military career of Iberville and his campaigns at Hudson Bay, upper New York, Maine, and Nova Scotia, vividly depicting all the wrath and barbarity of seventeenth-century warfare.

Crouse emphasizes the relationship between private gain and public service in Iberville's rise through the ranks of the French navy, outlining how his quest for booty and trade steered his military actions, and stresses the importance of family networks in both the commerce and government of New France. With a new introduction by Daniel H. Usner, Jr., to set the book in historiographical perspective, this edition of Lemoyne d'Iberville provides scholars and students alike with a fresh perspective on this remarkable colonial figure.

About the Author

Nellis M. Crouse, now deceased, was the author of several works on French colonial history, including French Pioneers in the West Indies, 1624--1664.

Daniel H. Usner Jr., professor of history and director of the American Indian Program at Cornell University, is the author of American Indians in the Lower Mississippi Valley.

A good portrait of a legend

The Lemoynes, among the most celebrated dynasties in New France, had no more famous son than Pierre Lemoyne de Iberville. Raised in Iroquois-battered Montréal, he first rose to prominence at the age of 25 serving with two brothers and a cousin under Chevalier de Troyes on a 84-day expedition (via the Ottawa River) to James Bay, where they captured three forts run by the Company of Adventurers (founded by renegades Médard Chouart Des Grosseilliers and Pierre Esprit Radisson, later known as the HBC) and placed them under his governorship. Thus began a decade-long struggle for the control of Hudson Bay, where mere peacetime survival was difficult (it remains difficult 300 years later).

With capable relatives and associates serving on Hudson Bay, Iberville also led other campaigns during this period (Schenectady 1690, New England coastal waters 1692, Acadia and Newfoundland 1696-97). His final exploit on Hudson Bay was a remarkable (outnumbered three to one) naval victory and the capture of York Fort in 1697. Hudson Bay was nonetheless ceded to England to serve national interests under the Peace of Ryswick, forcing Iberville to find a new quest.

He chose to fulfil the vision of René-Robert Cavalier de La Salle (who descended the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico with Henri Tonty in 1682, failed to find the mouth of the same river on his return by sea three years later, and was killed by mutineers in Texas in 1687). Commissioned by Louis XIV to find "the mouth (of the Mississippi)...select a good site which can be defended with few men, and...block entry to the river by other nations," Iberville sailed from France with four ships late in 1698. After exploring Dauphin Island (named Massacre Island after the discovery of sixty skeletons) and Mobile Bay early in 1699, he located the Mississippi Delta, entered the North Pass, and ascended the river. He confirmed it as the Mississippi only after meeting a Bayogoula chief wearing a blue French coat and finding a letter penned by Tonty for La Salle faithfully held by that nation since 1685. Iberville secured Louisiana with the establishment of Fort Maurepas on Biloxi Bay in 1699, Fort La Boulaye (Fort du Mississippi: Pheonix LA) in 1700, and Fort St-Louis on Mobile Bay in 1702. After conquering Nevis (1706), he fell ill, died at the age of 45, and was buried in Havana. The founding of New Orleans (1718) was left to his younger brother, Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne de Bienville.

Though published in 1954 (paperback 2001), this remains a lucid, chronological account of a major figure. It includes a brief portrait of his father (Charles Lemoyne de Longueuil et de Châteauguay, a man of modest birth ennobled in 1668 for accomplishments no less remarkable) and some of his siblings (most of whom compiled enviable records). If there's a minor fault in this work it's the inclusion of only two maps - Newfoundland and Louisiana (the New York frontier, Hudson Bay, and Acadia would also have been helpful).

Grade 2-6-- Berleth describes in simple, undramatic language the story of Samuel, a black 14-year-old who belongs to a Dutch Tory in 1776 Brooklyn and whose life is one of heavy labor. He longs for freedom, and his flagging courage is renewed by his fiery friend Sana, a fellow slave. Samuel watches as Washington's ragged army marches forth to engage the British on Long Island. In the midst of a furious storm he makes the decision to take his owner's boat across the East River, dragging a rope to guide the army across to Manhattan, and the rebels escape. Thus, this dark low point in American history is transformed into a triumph, as Samuel earns his freedom. Watling's watercolors on almost every page give chilling life to a despairing rebel army. Samuel's initial uncertainty and his later resolution are beautifully portrayed. If students say history is boring, give them this book. --Ruth Semrau, Lovejoy School, Allen, TX

This book was amazing! Never before has the Revolutionary War been so colorfully illustrated. I am now officially fan of Richard Berleth and have taken to reading all of his works. I only hope that he will write again soon.

Wonderful story!

My children are learning about the Revolutionary war but will also soon get into learning about the Civil War next year. I felt this book was a great starting point for teaching my children about freedom and helping others. There are historical facts and figures as well as fictional (main) characters who represent people who are unknown and what their lives were or may have been like and things some may have encountered in that time. My action-seeking little boys are sure to love this daring journey as they look at the beautifully illustrated pages and have their imagination stirred and thoughts turned towards the real events and ideas such as "what might it have been like for them to have lived at that time and had tough choices to make?" I also felt this book was a good starting point to introduce my young readers and listeners to the topic of slavery in a historical setting. It gave some depictions of a tough life with few choices but did not cover anything that may be for more mature children (such as beatings and other graphic violence that they will learn of when ready but could give small children bad dreams and such). It mentions hard work and hunger and not being treated kindly, for example. These, I feel, are a good start for very young children to begin to understand such a sad part of our nation's history. Although it's set in a war-time and it shows a particular young boy soldier wounded on his leg and some wounded/fallen soldiers in the water, again, I don't feel this book is too graphic for a war-time book for young readers yet still gives quite the sense of adventure and intensity that some children crave.

I read this book with a group of fifth graders. I find fault with the book because it is presented to students as fact when it is a work of fiction. More should be made of fact. Students come away from the book with the wrong impression.
