Teaching the Making of Authentic Art

I was introduced to this text by my Art Education professor. There is value on every page. In one chapter, the author applies his understanding of behavioral psychology and brain development to identify students who take one of five approaches to art making and prescribes approaches the educator should take to guide those students effectively toward mastery of skills and expressive art making. Research and years in the trenches support his opinions and suggestions.
If you are committed to the discipline-based art education method of showing the kids a painting by van Gogh and then asking them to be creative, this book may suggest that you may be shortchanging your students or that it simply takes too much effort to allow true self expression in the classroom.
