About the Author
John David Smith is the Charles H. Stone Distinguished Professor of American History at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte. He has written or edited numerous books, including Black Voices from Reconstruction, Black Judas: William Hannibal Thomas and 'The American Negro,' and Black Soldiers in Blue: African-American Troops in the Civil War Era.
Eugene D. Genovese, a retired professor of history, served as first president of The Historical Society. Among his books are Roll, Jordan, Roll: The World the Slaves Made; The Slaveholders' Dilemma: Southern Conservative Thought, 1820-1860; and A Consuming Fire: The Fall of the Confederacy in the Mind of the White Christian South. Fox-Genovese and Genovese serve on the editorial boards of a number of scholarly journals and are co-authors of Fruits of Merchant Capital: Slavery and Bourgeois Property in the Rise and Expansion of Capitalism. In 2004 The Intercollegiate Studies Institute presented them jointly with its Gerhard Niemeyer Award for Distinguished Contributions to Scholarship in the Liberal Arts.

One of the most "fair" books I have seen written on the subject.

The book was well written and took the "road less traveled" in that it presented some of the facts that many people prefer to ignore. Such as how in a good many respects slavery was an easier life than the life of a "wage slave". The book was not always the most exciting book, there were some chapters that I barely made it through. This book was worth the read and worth keeping in my library as well.

History Buffs Will Love This Historical Record

A great read void of the political correctness that taints the Old South by more current writers. Not for the squeamish or historians with blinders.
If you want to read one book that describes the slave South, this is it. You will discover that some of the same societal challenges faced today in our country were being faced in America back in the day - both in the north and in the south.
Every history buff should have this book in their library. It is rich in detail and sourced facts.

Authentic and Highly Informative

One of the few extensive, yes - exhaustive, studied of human bondage in the United States. It is exemplary in every respect. A must read for any objective historian or individual with an interest in the subject.
It is not for those who are carrying a prejudicial chip on their shoulder from the poor teaching of bondage in one's high school or college history class.
Be prepared to be schooled on this subject from the eminent historian on the topic.
