Excellent Collection of Summer Poems

I am very happy with this book, and purchasing this one encouraged me to purchase the other books in this series on the other seasons. The selection is eclectic and carefully chosen--everything from Shakespeare and Whitman to Louise Bogan, Robert Frost and Anne Sexton--and includes both new and older works and poems by minority writers. Poetry collections often fall flat, but not this one. This will make an excellent choice for anyone looking for poems to read before dinner, or even reading at the beach.

A Mind of Summer

The book was good but not, I thought, up to the standard set by the rest of the series, especially The Mind of Winter. Poem selection is a very personal matter, and I thought the anthologist may have suffered a little from the mind set that made Winter so good. His selections seemed at times bleak and almost regretful of Summer, not in my mind as celebratory as summer can be. Summer came out often as a reflective anticipation of autumn. Summer can be as exuberant as Spring, and the book just did not speak sufficiently to that aspect as I personally thought it should.
