Gr 2-5–This attractive, accessible title uses the Lincoln Memorial as a vehicle to outline the history of the Civil Rights Movement from the Emancipation Proclamation to Dr. King's “I Have a Dream” speech to the 2008 presidential election. Other pivotal moments include world-renowned singer Marian Anderson's 1939 performance at the memorial when she was barred from singing at Constitution Hall. Slade explains in clear, descriptive prose how the memorial “was created from twenty-eight smaller pieces carved out of white marble.” Bootman's realistic watercolor spreads are striking; one of them features portraits of several accomplished African-Americans, including Toni Morrison, Mae Jemison, Colin Powell, and Oprah Winfrey. “Change. It happens slowly. One small step at a time,” is the refrain that echoes repeatedly along with the “Pitter-patter….Click, click, click….Clomp, clomp” of the children, women, and men who climb the steps of the iconic structure. Unique book about the civil rights movement

This beautiful book begins with Abraham Lincoln and how he was instrumental in ending slavery. The book then goes on to talk about other famous African Americans and their contributions to the civil rights movement. Using the Lincoln Memorial as a consistent location, Suzanne Slade ties together Marian Anderson, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Barack Obama as some Americans who took steps towards change. Other African Americans pictured in the book are Toni Morrison, Mae Jemison, Arthur Ashe, Condoleezza Rice, Oprah Winfrey, Colin Powell, Andrew Young, Sojourner Trugh, Frederick Douglass, Jackie Robinson, and Rosa Parks. On the last page, there is a timeline of important events in the civil rights movement. This beautifully written and illustrated picture book is a wonderful addition to elementary and middle school classrooms, libraries, and homes.

A MUST OWN BOOK!!!

Suzanne Slade's eloquent words come alive in this book that inspires us to make a difference. The book starts with Abraham Lincoln and continues on to describe famous African Americans that have helped mold America. This book is beautifully illustrated and wonderfully thought out. It is a must own book for you and your children of all ages.

Since its completion and dedication in 1922, the enormous marble sculpture of Abraham Lincoln in the Lincoln Memorial building has drawn millions of visitors and served as the site of several major historical events. In particular, in 1939, African American opera singer Marian Anderson gave a mesmerizing performance on the Lincoln Memorial steps to an enormous live and radio audience after she was denied the right to sing in Constitution Hall. Almost 25 years later, civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" on the monument's steps. Several decades after that rally, the nation's first African American president and his family paid a symbolic visit to the Lincoln Memorial.
Climbing Lincoln's Steps uses these events as the backdrop in chronicling the long progression in U.S. history, from slavery until the election of President Barack Obama, toward racial equality and social justice. The book makes a useful resource for parents and educators seeking a book that will give younger children an overview of the history of racial discrimination and the civil rights movement in the United States.
