From School Library Journal
Grade 4-5?It is 1905, and Ida, 10, lives with her parents and grandmother among their people, the Suquamish, on an island off the coast of Washington. The story revolves around their struggle to maintain their identity; first as a family, and second as a tribe when the U.S. government resettles them on allotted lands and enrolls their children in "American" schools. Readers will identify with Ida's need to be with her friends and family and her despair over being sent away to a white boarding school. They will be enriched by her tenacity and the cultural values she exhibits, like cooperation and mutual responsibility. Like Regina in Sally Keehn's I Am Regina (Philomel, 1991) and Walnut in Michael Dorris's Sees Behind Trees (Hyperion, 1996), Ida is a fully realized character whom readers will care about. Hamm has done her homework, and her story is rich in Suquamish history and lore. It includes dialect that is used successfully because it is used sparingly. However, children won't read the book for its historical value, but because they will want to know what is going to happen to Ida. A fast-moving story with an admirable heroine.?Shauna Siebers, Central Rappahannock Regional Library, Fredericksburg, VA

One Strong Suquamish Girl
By Craig L. Seasholes
Daughter of Suqua provides a good account of the life and disruptions that accompanied this century's forced removal of Puget Sound's Native American children to schools far from family and tradition. It has been useful for reading groups with our classes interested in local Puget Sound history that does not sanitize the story of the native people.

Teachers and others interested in authentic Puget Sound history are strongly encouraged to supplement this with Coll Thrush's history of Seattle's native peoples. Native Seattle: Histories from the Crossing-Over Place (Weyerhaeuser Environmental Books)

Good Book
By Robert Boyes
This is a great book for children and adults. Many of us do not understand the history of Native Americans being relocated from their indiginous lands by the US government. This is a story about a young girl in the NW part of our country; not a Trail of Tears story, who has to leave her family to go to an Indian boarding school. It is something we all should learn; not told in American History. This is a good and easy read. I recommend it for everyone.

Excellent historical and cultural perspective, combined with an adventure story.
By GDM
I bought this book for my 11-year old daughter, and ended up reading it myself. Having worked for an Indian Tribe in the NW for 15 years, I was cautious as to how well the author would capture the complex and deeply moving history. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the story itself was engaging, yet the cultural and historical elements stayed at the center. Highly reccomend...
